I have had glasses for nearly all my life. Since I was in grade 2.

Then I got Lasik.

Once you get Lasik, you will wonder how you lived all your life with glasses.

Glad you got glasses, but the novelty will wear off soon enough.

If you compare the eye to a screen, you actually get higher resolution in the center of your vision, and it tapers off as you get near the edges. Your brain tricks your mind to thinking its a singular cohesive image, but in reality you could barely tell the color of an unfamiliar object sitting in your visual periphery.

EDIT: Full disclosure, I wear glasses. I can't be assed to wear contacts, and hey, I get UV protection for my shitty eyes.

Glass are cool though bro. Gotta get some nice frames.

People who went from glasses to contacts: were you happy with the change? I like my glasses from a fashion stand point, and they are easy to take care of, but they get uncomfortable after wearing headphones for a while and prescription sunglasses cost too much money.

Should I give contacts a try?

Most people just wear both. Contacts if you go out or are doing stuff at home that may be uncomfortable with glasses. Then just wear glasses when you're working or chilling somewhere.

I personally hate wearing glasses because they feel limiting and get in the way so I just wear night & day contacts.

I don't use this phrase lightly, but contacts literally changed my life. I'm big into basketball, and I broke my glasses once a year playing. I couldn't drive to the hoop out of fear of my glasses breaking. The day I got my contacts was the day my game improved 10 fold. Pretty personal and certainly doesn't apply to everyone, but if you play any kind of sports, contacts are 100x worth it.

I only wear glasses when I'm at home and lazy in the morning.

It's insane to me how bad some people's vision can be. My girlfriend can barely distinguish her fingers when she's hiding her arm straight out and I can pick it leaves on a tree down the street. Thank god for optometrists! Everyone should be able to see like me.

I too thought I had good vision when I was younger. Then I got my eyes tested during a driver's license test and was told I needed glasses, so I ordered a pair . The difference was astonishing. I was hesitate of wearing them before I ordered them, but once I put them on there was no taking them off.

I remember how things looked significantly better on the drive home. The details I could see in the tail lights on the car in front of me instead of a red blur, how I could see the details of the tress beside the road far ahead of me, and everything was readable from almost any distance. It was truly remarkable.

I wore them for 3 years. It was time for a new pair of glasses but I was not liking the idea of shelling out ~$300 for a new pair every few years. So I got LASIK surgery. It was around $1000 and worth every penny. I was surprised to find that most of the people I met there were American(I'm in Canada). Apparently It cheaper here.

Glasses will always offer the best vision providing your eye exam went correctly and the glasses were custom made, not the cheap options where you get pre-mades close to your vision needs.

Soft contacts will get you greater peripheral vision but a step below everything else.

Laser surgery gets similar results as soft contacts and some other negatives due to limitations of the technology.

I wore glasses for 10 years mixing in contacts now and then. Then I got laser surgery. I would highly recommend sticking with glasses.

I've been wearing glasses since 6th grade and only recently made the switch, just short of a year ago. Couldn't be happier and I could kick myself in the butt for not doing it earlier. I'd say go for it.

If you do end up giving them a try just know that you're not going to enjoy putting them in for the first time, I know it was hell for me. Sat there at the optometrist for easily half an hour, eyes red and watering, and when I finally got them in properly it was due to luck more than anything. Got used to it within a few days though, now it's second nature.

Glassess suck. They get smudgy, god forbid you lose the microfiber cloth and don't have one on you. If your ears are even slightly crooked (even if its not visually noticeable) that shit will annoy you when you put on your glasses since you feel it. You can't get full peripheral vision.

Contacts are better but still suck. I'm saving up money for lasik.

I should note that my eyes are awful. I can't see shit, but after using glassess all my life since I was a child I'm just tired of them. Contacts would be better if I didn't have to take them off ever, or if they weren't so expensive on my poor tight budget.

NIce, I need a pair myself, when I squint I get a turbo boost to 4k visuals too. Topic title made me wonder, does having a pair of glasses help with 3D vision?

DO not do that lol..

Main reason why my vision hasn't deteriorated is because I don't squint at all.

Pretty sure I'm gonna need some sort of vision correction soon. Faces are blurry to me when 20 feet+ away. Can't remember if that is normal or not.

I can still read fine, even reasonably far away.

Doesn't help that my job is looking through a microscope and working on a computer a lot of the day, and my personal hobbies are all computer related basically.

Every morning until I put my contacts in is like 240p, but as much as I don't enjoy putting my contacts in and out, I hate wearing glasses even more.

I dont feel like there's anything wrong with my eyesight, but with only my left eye I can't read anything on my computer screen.

Ha ha, I felt the same way when I got my first pair of glasses.

And then when I finally realized the detail on HD TVs and noticed the text on screen no longer had a slight blur, I fell to my knees and raised my hands to the sky!

"As seen on TV"

Probably not by their target demographic.

4K with my contacts although I often wish my condition wasn't bad enough where I could just wear glasses. The hassle and routine I have to go through daily is annoying as hell

This is honestly how I felt after getting glasses. I don't need them all the time, as I have 20/20 vision with an astigmatism in my right eye. I absolutely need them for low-light functions, though. They make a world of difference.

Sounds like there's something wrong with your eyesight. Different levels per eye aren't uncommon.

Well, I know there is something wrong with my left eye.
I just meant I don't feel like I need to do anything about it, since i can see perfectly fine when using both eyes.

I don't get headaches or anything.

No, fuck glasses.

I now wear awesome sunglasses instead of looking like an asshole and putting sunglasses on top.

No more having to deal with smudges.

I can enjoy waterparks without having to secure my glasses somehow.

Life is just so much better. Colours pop. I can see everything with so much clarity that I couldn't with glasses.

My only regret is that I didn't do it years earlier.

DO not do that lol..

Main reason why my vision hasn't deteriorated is because I don't squint at all.

I don't do it regularly, only sometimes, to see the difference, my eyesight is good enough that it isn't really a problem (yet)

When I'm not using the same 7-month-old pair of contacts that are from an outdated prescription, they let me see much more clearly than glasses, not to mention the noticeable outline of the frames aren't an issue with contacts. I wouldn't say contacts are 4K compared to glasses' 1080p, but they're like using proper anisotropic filtering in that really distant stuff (type on signs, horizon objects) doesn't get blurry, whereas with glasses I'd have to reposition them or tilt my head back.

First thing I thought when getting glasses; why didnt you assholes tell me this is what you all see the world like? I've been looking through beer goggles my entire life till now......

I was like "Wtf you mean Im supposed to see the individual leaves on trees?"

Both here. Only slightly myopic in both eyes (I believe the number is -1.00 whatever they measure it by).

Glasses are fine for home or going to the movies, but if I'm going out, I use contacts (daily ones).

I've had two friends who got laser eye surgery, and after the recovery period, they have both said "This is one of the best decisions I've ever made."

I remember that the first time I took my first pair of glasses I thought "How did I live without glasses until now ?". The first impact is a real shock.

I never understand how people could put something like contacts on a really delicate part like the eyes and not being terrified. I don' t know, the glasses seems less...dangerous to me (yes, I know it isn' t true, but I always avoid contacts because I hate the thought to have something so close to my eyes).

You rip out your eye lids yet then?

lol, awesome thread title OP. I still remember when I got glasses in the fourth grade. For the longest time I thought my squinting at the board from the back of the classroom was normal. I put my glasses on for the first time and could see carpet threads and leaves and all kinds of tiny things - was crazy awesome!

I was like "Wtf you mean Im supposed to see the individual leaves on trees?"
Yes! Thats one of the first things I noticed! Was like wtf, you can see the individual leaves? I thought you were just supposed to see green blotches....

A lot of people don't realize that when you go to the eye doctor, the primary reason for going to is to check the health of your eyes (which connects to the rest of your body) Most insurances cover at least once every 24 months (in the US at least) so there's really no reason not to go, it only takes about an hour unless you go to a crappy chain store which they rush you in and out in 15 mins). I can't stress enough how important it is to go to your eye doctor every 2 years at a minimum.

And even if you think you don't need glasses you might--it could account for headaches and eye strains. But an Rx for your eyes is the last thing a doctor should be in business for. If your eye doctor has retinal imaging then definitely do it. Even if they only have dilation which will leave your eyes blurry and sensitive to the light for a few hours, it is worth it. I've seen too many preventable cases where people neglected their eyes to the point of no return that could have been prevented with routine check ups.

I was like this when I first found out I needed glasses. It was in high school. I took my friends glasses off him and put them on. It turns out I was just about as short-sighted as he was, so his perscription was a pretty close suit for me. When I put them on I suddenly had super vision. I felt like Superman! I could count the leaves on the trees outside the classroom, the pimples on Greg's face at the front of the class.. It was amazing!

I should probably use glasses/contacts because I have a hard time recognizing faces from >10 meters away but god dammit I really hate wearing them.

lol, this thread is so great

one thing I don't like about finally seeing properly is you notice all the people who stare at you. it can be a bit disturbing sometimes, expecially on the tube

Till they make contacts that dim in the sun Ill keep my sunglasses. I got a pair a few years ago without the dimming or tinting and goddamn that sucked. The tint is faster and better now than when I got them the first time. I love it. I tried to get separate sunglasses and I would never remember to take them.

Got my first glasses a few months ago and I didn't think I had that bad vision without them. Apparently I did.

Like others have said, watching a tree was an eye opener. Them leafs.

I prefer contacts because you just see more with no frames in the way and you don't have to clean the glass all the time from random shit that gets on them. I have slightly better vision with glasses though, nothing super noticeable but it's there.

Currently I only use glasses because I don't want to deal with the maintenance of 1-month contacts and I don't have the money to spend on daily ones at the moment.
