Same here, I spend majority of my life sleeping a lot(10+ hours usually). Yet I'm usually tired when I wake up, sleep didn't seem to rejuvenate me. Thinking back, it seems that I wasn't getting good sleep( deep sleep). I was sleeping, but it wasn't good sleep.

Tired.

It's just inefficient. I dedicate anywhere from a fourth to a third of the day to being unconscious and I wake up feeling like a sack of soggy beans. With that much time resting, I'd hope to at least have the energy of a box of Jesus ponies.

What's a white, lower middle class heterosexual man to do?

I eat fairly healthy and I try to do some exercise in the morning, but I'm just exhausted. Is stress that much of a killer? How to release the stress so that I can finally taste the rainbow?

I went to a doctor and he told me to ask GAF, so here we are.

What is your diet? The conventional wisdom of "healthy" is pretty much wrong.

Also go to a doctor and get tested. Get an extensive blood profile. Stuff like:

Triglycerides
Blood glucose
Mineral levels (iron)
White cell & red cell count
Thyroid markers

Talk to a doctor about your symptoms, and make sure the doctor has the lab/tools needed to diagnose a likely cause rather than just hand out prescriptions to mask the symptoms.

What's your waist circumference? Do you get winded by going up a few stairs?

Do you get dizzy/blurry vision standing up after sitting on the ground for a few minutes? If you apply pressure to your finger nails, how long does it take for the blood to return? What color are your finger nails?

Might pay to have a blood test to check your iron/thyroid/whatever. Have a chat to your doctor about being tired, as your body might not be processing what it needs correctly.

Also a regular 7-9 hours of sleep (whatever works for you) but don't oversleep either.

Finally think about the quality of your sleep.

Late at night keep the lamps low and if you must be on your computer (GAF lol) then use a screen dimmer like F.lux. You'll get used to the orange, and it's a lot easier on the eyes.
Further than that try not to think about work or assignments or whatever. If you're up thinking about it, turn the lamp on and read a few chapters of a novel. You'll be calmer and will be more relaxed for sleep too.

More light in your eyes (and on your skin!) wakes you up, so less before bed the better. You'll fall asleep and your body won't be full of "awake" chemicals.
Additionally, the more light in the morning the more naturally you wake.
Philips made an alarm clock which slowly brightens the room in the morning, but it's hideously expensive so you could do the same with a power plug timer and a lamp/radio or electric blinds/whatever you've got.
I tend to roll over, hit my alarm clock and halfway open my blinds to watch the street.

Try and get your room as dark as possible during sleep, and make sure your electronics are off, alarms excepted.

I also like to sleep with some airflow so I usually keep my window ajar even in winter.

Also avoid sugary foods, apples and bananas in the evening. Not good having an energy boost then. Likewise coffee and tea. I like some cocoa before bed, as it's warm delicious and relaxing too!

Experiment, you'll find what's right for you :)

edit: I see I've been well beaten, but hopefully some of this works for you anyway.
Also have a think about your mood. You might be depressed, which tends to make everything that much harder and more lethargic.
In which case have a chat to a counselor about some strategies to lift your mood :>
I find St Johns Wort is a useful supplement, though don't mix it with and other medication you may be taking.

edit2: A friend told me the body sleeps in cycles of about 90 minutes, and that it's easier to waken at the beginning or end of those cycles. I'm not sure if there's any basis behind this or if it's a placebo thing, but I've found it seems to be easier.

get checked for allergies,
even if it is minute, but being allergic to dust mites which is all year round, could be enough to get you tired

allergies batter your immune system getting your tired

I'd be lucky if I get 8 hrs of sleep on a work night. Going on 2 1/2 hrs of sleep. There's no wonder why I'm tired tho lol.

And sadly, the nerd.gif cracks me up every time :lol

yeah, I know pot is cool and all but getting on someone's case because they can't tell right away what the picture of a clump of dried grass is, is a bit much.

And on the topic of pot, someone in my area smokes it at night, especially during hot summer nights when I open the windows to sleep, and the stench is overpowering.

So while smokers are getting legislated out of the western world, pot smokers can stink up the neighborhoods.

I have no great love for potheads.

You and llslave should get together and throw a pity party.

Fucking smokers and their anti-pot rhetoric.

Speaking from my experience you'll wake up groggy and your brain won't be as sharp during the day. You will, however, drift off to sleep like you're laying in a giant, extremely comfortable spoon. Of course I used to smoke a lot...

The person who suggested sleep apnea might be on to something. If it really bothers you, see about going to a sleep clinic.

And get a massage.

Now that it's mentioned, I have been feeling this way mostly since spring started. Could be allergies. Didn't have them the past two years but I did move in February. Same job so maybe it's something near my new place.

Not smoking marijuana. Sorry guys. But keep on suggesting it if you'd like

I don't have a doctor, but I guess I could look into seeing someone about it. Always feels like a waste of money because when I went for shit like this or depression years ago I never got anything of value out of it. Been tested for diabetes before but don't have it.

Regarding tehpwn's questions, I don't get winded going up stairs, don't know my waist size but I'm about 183cm tall and weigh in about 82kg. Not muscular, a bit of a gut. Have had the stand up issue thing happen to me a good number of times, actually.

As for what I eat it's usually an egg with toast or rice in the morning, whatever they serve for lunch which is usually fish or chicken, rice and a vegetable. Dinner ranges but always includes a couple if different vegetables. Only drink water and sweets are a rarity.

I don't smoke, but pot smoke isn't much better either especially when it interferes with my enjoyment of the fresh air up here.

Too much sleep just tires a person out, you need to sleep more regular hours
11pm to 6am is irregular?

And I just noticed the fingernail thing. Reverts in less than a second. And they are a pinkish hue.

Regarding the apnea, my wife has commented that I snore on occasions. Correlation? Causation? Castration?

Go get a sleep study. It's a pain in the ass, but it's the only real way to know if there's something wrong with your sleep cycle.

I'm "getting" enough sleep and it's not always a daily occurrence. Just often enough to be annoying as hell. Like, I feel the weight of the world crushing on my muscly eyelids right now.

With sleep apnea you would (appear to) be sleeping "enough," but the problem is the quality of your sleeping. And yes, snoring can be a sign.

Based off this, I'm guessing iron deficiency anemia. I've had it before, and I start getting symptoms every 6-12 months. I pop iron pills for a few weeks and it goes away. But if you leave it unchecked, it can drain the life out of you.

There could be another explanation for the dizzyness/blurred vision while standing up, but basically it means there's not enough oxygen rich blood getting to your brain. If your blood is oxygen poor in general, it explains both the constant fatigue and the standing up. Additionally, your diet, at least as listed, has no iron in it. Sure vegetables like spinach have iron, but you don't get any vitamin C to help absorb it and a bunch of other minerals and plant chemicals interfere with absorption.

I'd go to a doctor/lab and get an extensive blood profile and describe your symptoms. If you trust my fake doctor GAF diagnosis, buy some 150% iron pills and some 100-500% vitamin C pills and pop one of each 2 times daily for a few weeks. If I'm right, you'll start feeling better within a week. Too much iron is also toxic. If you get headaches and black stool, stop taking it.

Fingernail thing was a circulation/iron deficiency test. You fail if it's a blueish hue, takes more than 0.25-0.5 seconds for blood to return, or if you nails are very brittle.

You can read more here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_deficiency_anemia#Symptoms_and_Signs

Anyway, if you're like me you can diagnose yourself with cancer using the internet. Best to get lab work and talk to a doctor if you can afford it.

I usually sleep about three to four hours at night, and take an hour-long nap in the afternoon.
I used to try to keep a regular sleeping schedule--7 to 8 hours a day, all that stuff--but it just didn't work out and I'd always feel tired, especially in the afternoon.

Go jogging in the morning for 30-40 minutes.

If you live in Japan countryside I'm sure it's gorgeous (not that you won't get tired of it).
But if the sights get boring you can bring a walkman or something and listen to music.
Honestly I find that the less I exercise the more tired I get.

Also get a physical.

Don't fight this feeling. Lay down, connect to this website...http://www.rainymood.com/
Let it take you away as you sleep it down.

THIS IS EXCELLENTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT :D :D Thank you!!

I tend to sleep from 6AM-3PM and feel like shit. I don't really understand why - as long as I'm getting eight or nine hours why should it matter when I go to sleep?

Well to start off what you're experiencing is clearly abnormal, so you should definitely look into it. First thing to do would be to find a good doctor that will actually listen to you and be willing to take some form of investigative action (comprehensive blood panel, sleep study, whatever).

Also I'm only mentioning this because many doctors are a unaware of it's existence; but lyme disease (chronic version) can cause life-changing inexplicable fatigue. I myself started out with just being "tired" all the time but eventually ended up in a really bad spot because it took so long to be diagnosed. Nothing to worry about mind you :P. Just if absolutely nothing else turns up it may be something to consider.

Best of luck!

How is your sleeping environment? Just because your are "sleeping" for x hours doesn't mean you are actually getting good quality sleep.

For example, how dark is it in your bedroom at night? I have problems sleeping past 4 am because of the sun coming up so early. I have curtains but it still gets pretty bright.

Only get 8 hours of sleep each night, and not more or less. Just around 8. Oversleeping can make you tired.

Actually I think it's pretty much medically agreed now that the best thing you can possibly do for your body is what's called "free run" sleep - i.e. sleep until your body naturally wakes up. That feeling of being tired from too much sleep is actually a reaction from your body being previously messed up from too little sleep.

welp, GAF has spoken.

go get checked (for):

allergies
sleep apnea
iron levels
triglycerides
thyroid
full bloodwork
etc.

then smoke some pot and get back to us.

I've been doing exams for the past week and due to stress (I imagine it's stress), i've only been getting 4 or five hours sleep despite being tired.

So it could be stress that's giving you sleep trouble.

Aren't the marijuana laws pretty strict over there?

"Possession of any amount, as little as 0.1 g, is punishable by jail sentence for up to 5 years and/or a fine of up to 30,000,000 yen (>$300,000). However, the defendant has to stay in police custody for at least a few weeks until a court decision is made." ~Wikipedia
