Just ordered Dark Souls - Tips for a newcomer?

Not open for further replies.
I just beat the game and it was fucking awesome. I have not been able to put this game down since I started it a week ago. So many memorable zones and characters. I love the lore and understated story. Time to re-roll and run through it again. The only zone that really pissed me off was tomb of giants. Everything else was pretty manageable.

Today was the first time someone has ever came through my gravelord summon sign, that was pretty awesome. Poor guy didn't stand a chance against the gravelord sword at level 15 though.

Please tell me you mean Gravelord Sword +5, +15 is for Normal Weapons. I've seen hacked weapons that are like +15 versions of weapons that are supposed to be +5 and do a 1000 damage.

I mean SL15, sorry, it's a fresh char. IIRC the sword was only +1 from the demon right next to Andre.

Is anyone else suffering from flame/magic effect glitches while online following the latest patch on PS3? All fire and magic is invisible, only occasionally flickering into existence. Playing in offline mode fixes it. Apparently a common problem.

EDIT: Ignore - just saw discussion on last page. Hopefully FROM patch it soon.

souls noobs are fun lolololol

zweihahnder forevear qualityn builds for alllh!

I love that you hit 'post'

And I can't riposte for the life of me lollol, but backstab is ok hehehe.
It's too much of a gamble for me. If you miss your parry, you can be all but screwed.

Dodge, stab, back step, stab, roll, slash-slash-slash, back step, jumping stab!

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.

Do the glitch on Ceaseless still works?
Why do people think it's a glitch. He clearly has jump-, grab ledge- and fall-animations. There's a deep abyss next to the path near the fog door and because he can't stand there, he jumps in order to reach the player.

Also, I'd like to recommend to everyone in this thread to try relying a little less on guides and figure out stuff by yourselves. Sure, it's more challenging, you might not have a perfect build and you might not find every little secret on your first playthrough. But also a way more rewarding experience than just reading up on everything that lies ahead of you.

What to do
Play without firebombs for a while. You'll come a across another merchant later on who sells those (and black firebombs).

Try not to kill NPCs in this game. If you hit them by accident, run away and buy absolution from the guy in the bell tower.

So I made it to the Chaos Witch. The first time I fought her I got within a single hit of killing her and thought this fight would be easy. She killed me with her AOE attack which I cant seem to spot the tell for.

Fast forward to my 6th attempt, I dont know if I'm doing something provoke certain attacks but now she's spamming the AOE, jumping (which I also have a hard time avoiding) and swing her sword. Basically, she's only using the attacks that dont give me an opportunity to attack.

Sounds like bad luck. The best time to hit her is when she stops to barf lava onto the ground, which she always does frequently whenever I play.

What do you need firebombs for? They're not "needed" anywhere in the game, nor particularly helpful.

Tomb of Giants is cake with the Sunlight Maggot. Of course, chances are you don't have it in a first / no guide walkthrough, so I hated it as well the first time (having to hold a lamp or using guide stones is NOT fun).
For your next walkthrough, farm 30 humanity (extremely easy having access to Oolacile), open the Izalith shortcut and kill the maggots as soon as you can; as a bonus you ensure saving Solare. You might as well finish Izalith while you're there, so that Catacombs / Tomb of Giants is easier (that's what I did on my second walkthrough).

I feel regret.

I have no idea what I was thinking. I just summoned help for the first time and why I invited that kind of madness into my otherwise superlative Dark Souls experience I'll never know.

I'll start by saying I despise the entire invading concept. Having total strangers just show up and destroy me while I'm trying to make progress is quite possibly the least attractive proposition in all of gaming. But the game allows you to avoid this by staying hollow, so no worries.

Well like an idiot I summon help. An orange glowing character stood in front of me. Were they an NPC? Another player? Who knows? I didn't even want to think about it and started towards the fog wall. Before I could even get there and keep in mind this is a 30 second trip my game is invaded. Awesome.

I just keep running but my help has disappeared. I reached the door and receive a message that the invader had been killed. Then I get a bunch of souls that I didn't earn. It annoys me to no end that things are taking place in my game to which I'm not a party that I don't fully understand in the first place. But whatever, this is a one time deal so lets keep moving. Shortly thereafter my summon shows back up and we proceed to the Chaos Witch.

The fight that had been giving me such trouble was now laughably easy. I guess I thought by summoning the spirit they could act as a distraction which would give me an opportunity to land a couple extra hits, giving me just the edge I needed. I guess I saw it as a legit method to overcome your obstacles and that the overall challenge and DS experience would remain intact. In fact I thought I remember hearing somewhere that when you summon help the bosses gain extra HP and can make the fights even more difficult. Well that's not what I experienced. The challenge that I had been going back and forth with vanished, the Chaos Witch simply laid down. What was suppose to feel like a moment of triumph felt like nothing at all. I had just completely robbed myself of the quintessential Dark Souls experience.

I regret my decision. I want absolutely nothing to do with summons or invasions ever again. The rest of my play through will be a solitary one.

You got invaded by Maneater Mildred, she's a CPU invader that will always occur in that spot if you're in human form and haven't already beaten her, even in offline mode.

If you do beat her, she becomes a friendly summon outside Queelag's door.

The fact that you have no idea what happened is why this post is so hard to read..especially since you got invaded by the npc lol.. god..

Man, I think this game has me beat. I just can't progress in Sen's Fortress. Fight three Lizard men in a corridor that's as wide as they are. Fight two on a tiny walkway scattered with pendulums.

Gah! It's too fucking hard man!

I love it, but I've just hit a wall. I've been here for like 5 or 6 hours.

:(

The quintessential Dark Souls experience is overcoming seemingly impossible challenges, sure, but that needn't be limited to soloing bosses.

I would never say not leaving yourself susceptible to invasion ruins the experience (Because I HATE being invaded), but I'd say at the very least don't just play offline and miss out on the bloodstains, notes, echoes, etc.

Hell, drop a summon invitation while you go farm, help a fellow player out after you master an area.

Do you have a bow? Kite them one at a time.

Also, there's a lightning spear here that makes them all MUCH easier.

This might simply be your limitations as a gamer. Either up your skill or move on. Watch a youtube video of Sen's just to see how someone can trivialize it. If you can't replicate that, it's alright, no need to bash your head against the wall.

There should never be a time where you fight more than one at a time. Also, using a bow to knock off enemies into the pit makes things much more manageable.

Sen Fortress was the hardest part on my first run. Keep going on it, you'll end up doing it.

Sen's is easily my favorite area of the game. So tightly constructed, so goddamned evil...

Anor Londo's a close second, there was just something about its vacant vastness that was subtlety unsettling.

Yes, I'm rocking a pharis bow +4.

I use the bow to get their attention and take them on one at a time with melee, I don't know how great a strategy using mainly the bow would be.

Poison arrows?

I honestly don't even know where you could be fighting 3 dudes unless you fell to the bottom under the pendulums. For the purpose of clearing the tower, you should be heading up. If it's frustrating you that much, forget all the exploration and just get your ass to the bonfire first. Head to where the balls are rolling down, watch the traps and the lizard casters, now run your ass up to origin of the balls (take your gear off to be quicker), change the direction, head up the stairs in the corner, go across a few more bridges while paying attention to ranged lizard dudes, go outside and jump to the bonfire. Now you can mess around all you want. The only time you might have 2 lizard dudes is the small stairs where the caster waits at the top and there's a guy around the corner in a dead end.

NinjaboiX, remember to only fight one lizard at a time. It is easy to die when you get ganged up by monsters in this game. I think I know the spot you are talking about where there are three lizards near by. After crossing the pendulums go to your right and fight that lizard. Once beaten fight the one at the top of the stairs. There is another one but you can avoid him altogether unless your farming souls. Hope that helps and DON'T give up.

edit: Also have you powered up your flasks to 10 in the bon fire? This helps tremendously.

Worldrevolution, finding the bonfire is my next mission.

Edit: thanks for the tips too labombadog. I'm going to give it a rest for now, I'll try again tomorrow.

Gouty - at this point in the games life, a lot of people you will summon will be seasoned players, often using vastly superior or upgraded gear than yourself, they also know how to take down the bosses because they've probably done it hundreds of times.

It's fair to say if you don't want to have co-op or be invaded, you can stay hollow and still be online to see the messages etc. There are NPC summons who won't make bosses too easy for you if you do need help - and you can still co-op for other players in their world even when you are hollow, so you can still get the rewards of co-op.

I played solo first playthrough because I wanted to experience and achieve everything by myself - that's cool, but jump in online later on maybe, it's a huge part of the game's appeal :)

I think summoning help cheapens the experience and think invading is lame as fuck. Deal with it.

There's nothing for me to deal with lol. Play the game how you like. If you enjoy being ignorant, that's fine too.

Where exactly are you fighting three guys in one corridor? I can't remember any point in Sen's where that happens. There's one point with 2 greatsword lizard and 1 mage lizard in close proximity, but they shouldn't all get aggro'd unless you are running around carelessly.

Try parrying. All the lizard's attacks except the bite attack can be parried. You can practice the timing against the two lizard in the first room of Sen's. If you can parry their attacks 60-70% of the time, you can get through Sen's no problem. Parrying is especially useful when you are fighting on the walkways and narrow corridors, since there's no room to dodge.

Against the Lizard on the narrow walkways, get a 100% physical shield, greatshield if possible, and try to push them off the ledge by blocking their attacks. If their attack is deflected, they are pushed back a bit, try to position yourself so that they are being pushed back towards the edge.

What kind of gear are you using, by the way? Is your weapon/armor/shield upgraded to +5 at least? Are you still using the greatsword?

You might want to look on youtube for direction to Sen's bonfire because it's not that easy to find.
Especially while an enemy is attacking you from afar.
It would be incredibly, incredibly frustrating for you in particular if you've spent 6+ hours getting through Sens, finally manage to do it, but die before you can find the bonfire.

Go to female merchant in undead burg (long tunnel that connects Firelink to sewers) buy 100+ Poison Arrows

hit a lizard with 3 from distance watch it die

works on pretty much everything in DS

Watch a video if applying the tips isn't helping. The thing that makes lizards tough is their poise. A great sword can spank them into the ground and neuter them. Most other weapons, not so much. So a shield is your next step. Use one -- a greatshield for instance -- that is good at staggering them when they hit you while holding it up. Then punish with one or two hits. Don't get greedy. Drop your shield whenever possible to get your stamina up. Then hold it up again and repeat until the lizard is dead. If stamina management is an issue, try items that make it regen faster. If you have done the Catacombs, you might have the Mask of the Child, for example.

Parrying works but this is one of the few enemies I didn't bother with it, since I don't think the riposte works on them. Too much risk unless you're absolutely amazing at the timing.

Also take this opportunity to pay attention to aggro. The only room with three enemies at once is constructed so you should only fight one at a time and one of the great sword lizards can be skipped entirely. Don't let enemies have you backing up too much. Always roll back in. Hold your ground as much as you are able. No need to ever fight enemies that could ignore you. Go down the hallway to kill the lizard to the left of the stairs alone, then up the stairs to kill the Mage. Ignore the other one and move forward.
Parry/riposte works on the lizards, you just need to be close to them, or move forward after parrying, to land the riposte. The greatsword they use has a ton of range, so it's possible to parry the attack, but not be close enough to land the riposte.

Starting up a new character, it's amazing the gameplay and lore hints the NPC's give if you care to exhaust their dialogue options.

Talking to NPC's and reading item descriptions, you're made aware of enemy weaknesses and what dangers may be in what areas, and more.

I also noticed how From attempted to make Taurus an easy fight. On the way there, if you're attentive and explore a little, you will find lots of firebombs, even black ones, and also some pine resin, all of which are very effective against him.

And the archers on the tower force the player to go up there, so again, if players have been attentive, they should realize that may be a good spot to do a plunging attack, which the tutorial teaches them how to do.

In New Londo, the urn with the corpse in it really begs your attention, and if you read the item description of the transient curses it drops, it will tell you in no uncertain terms you cannot engage ghosts without being cursed yourself.

I really like this subtle way of explaining in-game mechanics through NPC dialogue and item descriptions, although some fundamental mechanics like equip burden and poise should be fully explained in the manual.

What do you need firebombs for? They're not "needed" anywhere in the game, nor particularly helpful.

Hell, drop a summon invitation while you go farm, help a fellow player out after you master an area.

Should be enough simply not switching to human form unless needing to kindle a bonfire, and then killing himself afterwards. I agree that summoning people can take the challenge off a fight, although I've never had such an extreme experience like that (then again, I barely summon anyone ever). I did cave in and summon help to cut goddamned Kalameet's tail.

This might simply be your limitations as a gamer. Either up your skill or move on. Watch a youtube video of Sen's just to see how someone can trivialize it. If you can't replicate that, it's alright, no need to bash your head against the wall.

That's nonsense. Anyone that has reached Sen's Fortress can finish the game. It just takes getting better and more experienced at it. If all else fails, I found the lizards, along with black knights, to be the enemies in the game most affected by you being above their level. When you get back to Sen's after, say completing Anor Londo, man, they're such pussies.

Part of it is that they can one or two-shot you when you reach Sen's (unless you're overleveled, I guess), so fighting two or more at once is almost certain death. They're extremely vulnerable to backstabs, though, and there's often arrow traps that can be used to nail them (one right at the begining of the fortress, even).

Parry riposte you Lizard fucks!

Found the bonfire.

Rock rock.

Awesome! :) Keep up the good work, we're rooting for you!

Cause I need it to beat the
butterfly

No, you don't. I didn't even use a single ranged weapon on that fight, it conveniently parks itself on the bridge every now and then so you can beat the crap out of it with your favorite melee weapon. How polite, right? :)

Embarrasing story time: I was stuck on Taurus for a few hours, because I thought all of its attacks would be unblockable at that stage, and tried to learn the dodge timing to perfectly dodge through the entire fight. Turns out you can block most if not all of its attacks, they take next to no endurance.
The most embarrassing part? This was my second (non Game+) playthrough. Being used to powerful-looking attacks being mostly unblockable in the mid to late game, I just assumed this would be the case too. :D

So, no real game progress today, but I did get my hands on an Eagle Shield and also got my Pyro Flame up to +15.

Eagle Shield is pretty good, right? Had been using a Spider Shield, anything else I should look at getting?

Yes!

Don't be a fool and drop the Eagle Shield, it's really good for poise.

Apparently, I wouldn't know...

The tell for her AoE is when she falls on her spider mouth, as if hurt somehow.
Bosses in Dark Souls use attacks based on the distance you are away from them. If you are slicing and dicing right up close, she is gonna do her AoE.

Get a few hits in, then bail.

The eagle shield is great for stability (less stamina drain per block), and for simply being a greatshield, which deflect most attacks, leaving enemies vulnerable to attack for a moment.

It's certainly not the best greatshield, especially after its nerf, but it has very low stat requirements and can be acquired early.

Yeah that's the thing, I'm trying to keep under 25% weight and I had the 16 Str already and any other greatshield brings my weight up too much.

Both concepts balance each other out. Want to summon help > risk an invasion.

Also, as others have already mentioned: you didn't get invaded by another player. You just wrote a page about losing against an AI enemy. Fun times. ;)
