Just realized there is no way XBLG goes free anytime soon.

I think people in US don't feel it, play Xbox LIVE compared to any other service is just unreal, I don't know how MS do it, but worth every single penny.
We've been doing it all for free for a long time.

I was actually really disappointed when I got XBL and UC for the Xbox. Then I got Crimson Skies and it was almost worth it.

Well it is easy choise for me. If online play is behind paywall on Xbox I will get PS4. If PS4 online is behind paywall I will get Wii U or go PC only.

Absolutely unacceptible in my opinion. Damn shame too since I had to skip 360 this gen because of it.

PSN is great for me. PS3 has its problems but PSV shows Sony is on the right track and I have no doubt in my mind that they can do even better with PS4.

Well that's the only thing in XBLG approaching "worth" paying for. Every other bit of functionality has been done better elsewhere for free.

If you own a PC, sure. I don't. I have no real interest in doing so. So for me, and many many many other people, it's not better elsewhere, because the "free" portion of that equation comes with a steep admission price. Not interested. For me XBL charges for shit they shouldnt be charging for, but overall the service is better and infinitely more stable than PSN, and it appears that most of my friends agree, so it's actually not better elsewhere until that changes. As long as PSN is bad enough that I'd rather pay for XBL(and as long as I remain a Mac user instead of a PC user), there's not really much for me to consider.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if they added a third payment option.

Xbox Live Gold = Everything is as normal. Access to everything. $9.99/Mo

Xbox Live Silver = Access to all media content/apps/TV/Music etc, but no gaming privileges. There are a bunch of people that just use Xbox Live to stream media and have no interest in playing games. $4.99/Mo

Xbox Live Bronze = The new "free" version of Xbox Live. $0.00

I think silver should be the ones interested in games but not the apps.

I paid less for this PC than I did my 360.

But it probably doesn't help that my online multiplayer games are circa 2003. And earlier. For some reason I can't stop playing Counter-Strike (OG version) and Soldier of Fortune 2.

XBLG is worth it if you're a gamer in the States; its value is comparable to what you pay for over there.

I assume most of the posters on this thread complimenting it are from the US, I had a Gold subscription when I was in the states a couple of years ago and felt it was worth it then, but when I migrated back to my home country and checked out what it had to offer over here, the disparity was really apparent.

TL:DR, US gamers get more bang for their buck with XBLG compared to gamers in other nations.

that's why I sold my 360 and bought a PS3 instead. I dont want to pay to play my games online. Sonys service may be flawed but atleast it is free.

On top of that, MS made it a pain in the ass to disable auto-renewal of their gold service.

I think you can glean from the fact that I never mention Nintendo when discussing online services that I don't think highly of them...or much at all.

I go back further. My online PC game of choice was Wormageddon. Fortunately Worms games showed up on XBL so I can still get my fix. Ninja Roping on a game controller still can't touch the keyboard and mouse though.

It's still the best service for a console IMO. I like the avatars, the achievement layout, it's easier to talk with friends as well. In all I don't mind paying.

Oh well it isn't that bad. EU gamers get more bang for their buck with PS+ compared to gamers in other nations :D.

I bet you I paid less to build this gaming rig, and half of the games I purchased for it this year than you did on your Mac.

I see where you are coming from, but you are wrong. PC is the better place to be, and the cost is offset by the price of games which in a lot of cases is >30% less.

I was also considering that as well. However, I'm sure Microsoft's line of thinking is different. I'd like to only pay for gaming with no apps/extras, but who knows.

The yoshi gets them every time.

My 360 tends to be exclusively my single-player console. I've actually played a lot more Wii games online. My gimped PC is my multiplayer console.

PC isn't a better place to be for me. This isn't an objective conversation. It's subjective, and I don't want to subject myself to Windows. And I'll bet you my Mac was cheaper ...free with work. =)

Yeah, they think I'm a Yoshi/Nintendo fan instead of just a pervert that likes seeing Yoshi get his ass massaged.

Thing is, I think most people would get just the games one and hardly anyone would get the "gold" version. So I guess MS would think differently as you say.

If it were up to me, I'd add 4 options.

Ultimate = Everything

Gold = Only Gaming privileges

Silver = Only Media privileges

Bronze = Current silver free account

Oh la di da Mr. Princess Yoshi!

What I'm thinking MS will do next gen is offer even more value to Live, maybe make like Netflix where one payment gets you a lot of content.

Well I'm a pretty hardcore gamer and I don't pay for it. Online for me is nice if its free, but not worth money. Make of that what you will.

BOTH of these are doomed to miserable failure unless people are really that idiotic, and in both cases I'd be kind of frustrated with those people for being dupes that enable Microsoft! Unless the streaming/app stuff was for things exclusive to Xbox BECAUSE that charge lets them get it, like ESPN or (I believe) last.fm streaming to Xbox without requring a subscription on PC. But Netflix and the like, no, everyone else is offering that for free and Microsoft needs to accept that it makes them look terrible to keep hiding it behind an extra pay gate.
The yoshi gets them every time.
I actually think some of the more Nintendo-negative posts have been coming from people with NSMBU avatars. Figures.

I'm letting my sub expire in April and I won't be getting Durango. Halo was keeping me in the ecosystem but I stopped enjoying online pretty quickly. I also really didn't enjoy the story and retcons of 4. Figured it's just time to walk away.

PS+ is the same price and I get free games on two platforms.

Its simply because its the only choice. Go try the PC version of TF2. You choose your server, map, game mode, weapons allowed, mods. You have achievements, events, free maps, user created maps, user created weapons, user created game mode. You have recording, editing, uploading, spectating.
You can do every single thing you want.
Even the most supported game on Xbox 360, lets say COD or Halo 4, do not have even half of the things that TF2, a free game, have.
And how much does it cost to play online? The price of your internet connection.

THAT is worth every penny.

Logging into Xbox.com and disabling it is a pain in the ass?

I agree that they need dedicated servers going forward, but people trying to compare Xbox Live to PSN is a joke. Not to mention anyone paying 50/60 a year for Xbox Live in 2012 shouldn't be allowed to use a console, you can get a 12 month card pretty much any week of the year for 30-35 dollars online.

Also playing against PS3 users in most games is like playing offline against bots.

I believe it wasnt until pretty recently that Microsoft made it easy to disable auto renewal.

Not when Steam exists, and not when PSN is free and offers almost the same features, with PS+ actually being a DEAL in services and discounts.

OK, if I try to play TF2(PC) with my friends in US, is almost impossible to play(Laging as hell), in LIVE is perfect almost no lag.

Using the SAME internet connection, now explain me this...

I really have no idea. Mostly because TF2 is people with actual servers. Take a server with low latency. For both of you. I played on Russian servers and on Australian servers without much of a problem and I'm Canadian. Depend on the quality of the server. You have the choice with PC.

Yep. And it's also worth noting that the option is not available in every region. Basically, when Microsoft is not forced by local laws to do it, they're likely not going to offer the option.

Edit:

Wtf is this shit.

Look at the server list and choose a sever with a low ping.

They may've wisened up, but for awhile there they disabled the option to disable auto renew except in areas where the law actively forced it to be an option. It's one of the reasons Microsoft lost my favor as the generation went on, at least Nintendo seems to be ignorant or overly conservative more than anything else, but when you make something better only to actively regress on some limp "well we've had other people go in and cancel it" grounds is... what the hell?

Well, and it makes me uncomfortable to subscribe if I can't easily unsubscribe, so that's a huge reason for dropping Live here.

Yeah I can't remember the last time I paid full price for a year of live, been subbed since the beginning.

it wasnt like that a couple of years ago.

Could not be worst than the WoW unsub screen with a crying orc and twelve questions and then them saying why you should not unsub because this answer is not good enough. But that if you want, you can, but that they will miss you and you will still be able to come back.

A little bit more and you hear a sfw of "I dont want to miss a thing" in the background

I actually disabled it and Microsoft charged me $200 over a few years behind my back. When I confronted them they told me to pay up or forfeit my live account for good.

I don't understand it too mate...LOL

But work like this, so for me XBLG woth every single penny. ^_^

All these people boycotting MS next system! It's done for!

...were we not supposed to voice our opinions on this issue?

Here's the deal Jet, myself and several of my friends represent a small sample of the gaming populace. We obviously don't speak for every single person who may put money down for the next MS system, but this is how surveys work - they collect a representative sample and extrapolate data from those results. I don't claim that MY particular sample is big enough to have any statistical validity, but I do think this opinion is out there and worth noting.

Hope this helps you now, and in your idiotic posts to come!

Really you should try again and choose a server with low ping. Paying 50$ a month for a lower experience is not really worth every penny.

Quite honestly if XBLG doesn't go free or offer better value then what it does right now, I'm letting my subscription run out and won't be getting Durango. Being on Steam/PSN definitely has shown that paying for the right to play games online when I'm already spending money on internet in the first place is ridiculous.

Yep, been a subscriber since the early months of Live and I let it run out for the very first time in 2012. Just wasn't worth it anymore when I buy all the systems anyways. Besides the very few exclusives, I can just play online elsewhere.

If more people feel the same way and MS sees its subcriptions number go down, it might go free at some point.

I rarely play online, and never feel the need to use group chat. XBLG isn't really worth it for me, which is why I'm canceling it again.

People hoping that MS makes online gaming free next gen will be pretty disappointed. It's the biggest, most nagging hook that gets people to continue paying for the service. Their friends are on XBL so they continue to pay to play with them. If you're paying for XBL because you like Netflix, you're doing life wrong.

Also, Sony isn't going to charge for online play. That's what PS+ was for. Sony also knows that it's a huge advantage they have over MS. Many people choose Playstation for the sole reason that they don't want to pay for XBL.

Basic online multiplayer should be accessible to everyone, that's part of the game you pay for. Locking that feature away behind a paywall is bullshit and should probably be illegal.

Wait, OP thought Microsoft was going to make Gold free? What signs was he picking up? Over 30 million people pay to have Gold every year and many people are pre-paid for up to three years. Microsoft can't just suddenly make the service free without changing their entire business plan.
