Install all the updated drivers for your hardware from the manufacturers websites before you do anything. Then run windows updates.

I havn't fresh installed in a while, and it that time my software list has changed but here is the list that i would put on:

Microsoft Security Essentials
Windows Home Server Connector
Internet Explorer 9 (with flash and silverlight)
Windows Live Essentials (especially Mesh)
Microsoft Office 2010
Zune
JDownloader
MetroTwit
CCCP

Then I will do a back up at this point in time, so i can refresh back to this state when ever.

Any other software will be downloaded as needed.

I haven't heard about Windows Home Server connector. Is it easier to use than rdping or using that team viewer thing? I'm installing windows home server 2011 this weekend.

I was about to say Ninite fails for not having Notepad++, but then I saw it under developer tools.

So true :lol

I can only talk about WHSv1, as that is what i have. I bought an OEM version and it came with 3 discs: the server software, the PC restore disk and the server connector disk.

My understanding that it is required to install the connector software to enable all the features. On installation it will automatically configure the backing up of the computer, match the password for the user account on the PC and the Server, enable you to RDP to any PC and initiate back ups on those PCs, load up the shares on the server to your desktop, automatically add the shares to the relevant libraries and other things...

When you use the software to connect to the server, it will essentially RDP into it but will only show a small square with the menu system they have employed (can't recall the name atm).

I would definitely recommend installing it on all computers. The connector software is on the server anyhow, in the Software share (probably).

Fuck!?
I never knew this exists, that's awesome.

Edit: Thought I'd ask here, which video decoders pack should I use on that list? There's K-Lite and CCCP, I think I always just install FFmpeg or something when I do a fresh install along with mediaplayer classic, I don't really know their difference.

Oh wow, the responses on ninite. Shame that GAF didn't know about it. Although I think you cannot select the directory where they have to install it, annoying with SSD's and such. But that's only minor.

Install the CCCP and never worry about issues again. Media Player Classic comes with it.

There's always issues with codec packs. At the end of my windows installations' lives I'm sure I have every codec pack on the net installed and still need to crank up vlc for some things.

CCCP is the superior codec pack for me in XP.

I use Shark007 for Win7.

How in the fuck did I miss this when I've been manually going to some of these after our old image was done. Thankfully the new image has all the latest stuff now but coming to see this now is just a kick in the balls for me, as an IT :(

K-lite is the only way to go, i watch 6-10 hours of video a day on my pc and i does me perfect.

You have to be watching some damn obscure (or Real, lawls) format for it to not be recognized by the CCCP.

I love Notepad++

I put the portable version in my dropbox folder so the state of the application syncs with my work across computers.

Fuck, i just did a fresh W7 install last week, wish I'd known about ninite.

the second best feature about ninite is that you can launch that same installer app whenever you want to keep those applications you selected updated. works very well for something like Flash or CCleaner, programs that seem to get updated every other day.

Ninite will come in handy.

Speaking of reinstalling Windows. Has anyone been able to swap motherboards without a Windows reinstall? I know Windows is supposed to detect the changed hardware but all I get are blue screens.

uninstall all the motherboard/PCI/USB drivers before you change motherboards.

Most chipsets are intel now, more than likely it is AHCI. I recommend going into BIOS and setting AHCI (sata mode) to compatibility.

What's the best way of doing a backup of a Windows system so you can rollback easily?

Would recommend doing an image of the disk, once you have it in a state that you like. Im on a work PC at the moment so i can't tell you the exact steps, but search around to find it (it's built in).

Then store this in a good location, then you can always just reimage your hard drive back to that state.

Or buy a windows home server, which does it for you automatically every day.
