Just saw Blade Runner... Any games with similar vibes?

Regarding the Last Night, did anyone see the vice article on this?

That's why I stopped using the hashtag. ...I still say I stand for equality, I still stand for journalistic integrity. But using the hashtag is bad because it put me in a group and a trench that I don't want to be part of. I prefer to build bridges. Not being entrenched.

Because I think nothing good ever comes out that is interesting or positive from this trench war. That's why I started distancing myself from GamerGate. I can't accept any part in harassment. As soon as that was happening I stopped using that. I regret reopening that wound for many people who were hurt by it. I really, really do. I am working with people, at Raw Fury and everything, who have been suffering with it. And so… I saw the consequences directly. And I just feel terrible about that.

I don't want people to have the wrong impression of what The Last Night is about. When I was talking about how feminism has an impact in the future… the way I said it was really bad. For me I was toying about the idea of what social movements can lead to in 50 years. There are so many themes in The Last Night that I wanted to cover, if I'm going to paint a comprehensive view of the future.

And so about feminism, the thing is, I was thinking that some feminists say the last barrier between men and women is the fact they carry children. Pregnancy. And because it makes it harder to get hired for instance. When you're pregnant you can't party, you can't drink, you can't smoke, everything gets really complicated. I understand that.

And I was thinking maybe in this future we came up with artificial wombs. Where you are free from having to carry your kid. And so then you know, cool, you can continue to do what you want. You can work, you can continue to drink or smoke if you want. That's it! I don't think it's bad or good in any way. The only thing I'm trying to say is I'm trying to imagine what could happen if I push that into the future.

I have the original Blade Runner from westwood on PC, sitting on my shelf. Played it many times, and i'm gonna give it a go this weekend again. It's one of the best adventure games ever.

Others i will recommend are Shadowrun Returns, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, Shadowrun: Hong Kong, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Snatcher.

I'm seriously looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077 and The Last Night. Can't come soon enough.

Gemini Rue
Shadowrun (Returns/Dragonfall/Hong Kong)
Beneath a steel sky
Deus Ex series
Syndicate (the FPS reboot)
Observer
Dex
Satellite Reign
Remember Me
Blade Runner (the game)

The actual Blade Runner game from Westwood is incredible. It is very dated graphically though, but if you can look past that, it's worth it.

The trouble about snatcher and blade runner is you cant buy them anymore besides on ebay, damn , would love to have both of these to play.

Snatcher

Unfortunately it goes for an exuberant price

This game is everything blade runner made good but better... that storyline, impossible to forget.

Edit: I see a lot of complain about snatcher price, buy, it, beat it, resale it, i mean it really easy to sale.... or just.... you know what i mean ;).

Snatcher. It's my favorite Kojima game.

What I like about it is how it's unabashedly appropriating Blade Runner but in a way that makes it clear Kojima does it out of love and appreciation for it. Snatcher kind of comes across as a game that wants to depict a world that, unlike Blade Runner, would be lovely to live in if it weren't for the Snatcher menace terrorizing people.

I love how this game looks, but that ship scene in particular - the lighting, that rain effect, my GOD it's just incredible to look at. I can't wait to play it.

The blade-runner sci-fi style is something I really dig, so thanks to this awesome thread I'm gonna be looking into a lot of games I missed.

As for The Last Night, we all often try to separate creator and creation, but 1) cyberpunk is a genre built on philosophical exploration and social themes, 2) the game is supposed to be very narrative-driven, and 3) said narrative is built around the developer’s opinions and beliefs as mentioned in the thread. And thus it’s compromised at its core.
Probably true, but IMHO there's nothing wrong in saying "the art is awesome, I'm hyped for that. Let's wait and see how the story ends out being". And actually, after reading how he explained his ideas after the shitstorm (like in the Vice article linked before), I'm not so sure they would be so outrageous or uninteresting. Yes, cyberpunk is about exploring and extremizing social themes, and his views on some of these could be interesting to see, outside of a couple of very bad tweets.

Or it might end up being a very shameful, bad game. But I'd like to judge it once it's out, rather than judging it from a couple of shitty tweets. I mean, the movie industry is full of misogynistic directors who made great movies. Are we starting to judge them on their ideas/attitude rather than their movies? Maybe I'm just being naive, but this is the way I think.

I haven't played Snatcher, is the story that good? I may need a Kojima fix soon...

You have no idea !. It take 30 min to get hook, that warehouse section...And this is the festival of really good twist. Also a lot of side content dialog are so funny and good.

In term of quality of the lore and the dialog (the VO is outstanding for the time), i could say this is Xenogears/Chrono trigger level. I mean i played that game in like 2007 the first time. I was just blown away, I bought after a real physical Sega-CD copy like a year later (before the big boom price), i was like see does the game have the same effect on me as the first time... and i think it was even better, because the background help me to understand some really nice detail.

Damn you got me hooked already! So, there are like 6 versions of that game, should I go for the Sega CD one? I've seen that it's the one with most content and less censorship, I think?

This is the only English version that exist, and that Teen rating on the box is the most misleading ESRB rating ever release, this game is clearly really Mature game.

Ho and i forgot the mention the music, i mean... i can't put word on how it change the mood of the game in a fraction of second, that feeling is great.

But the game was conceived out of a sexist understanding of what feminism is by someone who has shown no change or self-awareness. A huge part of compelling cyberpunk relies on a solid grasp of societal issues viewed through a futuristic, dystopic lens. Shoehorning a meninist's nightmare into that setting will make for a stupid story, and the devs have given no reason's to expect anything else. They haven't in any way proven they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

If all it has going for it is that it's gorgeous, I can watch clips online.
He did say that this changed since then

Soret swiftly defended himself, tweeting: "I completely stand for equality & inclusiveness." Four hours later, he added, "In no way is The Last Night a game against feminism or any form of equality. A lot of things changed for me these last years."

At E3's PC Gaming Show this afternoon, Soret began his showcase of The Last Night with an apology: "I am embarrassed by some tweets I made in the past. I want to apologize for those. They do not in any way represent who I am today or what The Last Night will be about."
I'll wait and see what the previews say about the game. No doubt that journalists will put the games themes under a microscope

Snatcher

Probably already mentioned, but 2064: Read Only Memories is heavily inspired by Snatcher.

Transistor is a great game and vaguely similar as well. The aspect of trying to resolve the mystery behind both your attempted assassination and the fate of the city felt very Blade Runner-esque. Not so much noir though.

How excellent was this game? Not just subject matter either, it actually had interesting mechanics and writing too.

I can't for the life of me understand why someone like GOG doesn't take it on. Threads like these always demonstrated there'd be a market for it especially with the resurgence in point and click adventure games.

According to today's Eurogamer article it's because the original source code has been lost

As a new Blade Runner film arrives in cinemas today, the video game that shares its name should be front and centre on GOG. But short of rebuilding it brick by brick, Blade Runner will never get a facelift or a new home. In 2003, a terabyte of data was lost. The source code went down the drain, and ever since, Westwood's magnum opus has been buried beneath the weight of time.

Like I said: They haven't in any way proven they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

1) That boilerplate denouncement of sexism came after the E3 backlash and 2) having bought into Gamergate rhetoric as an adult requires more than "I'm no longer a bad personal, honest—pls buy my game" to have a convincing reformation.

the game is great, et it's definitely worth playing but i didn't find the plot that interesting, there's a twist but it was laughable to me, but for the time it was good i guess... if you want a great game from kojima story-wise, policenauts is way better

But yes, go with the sega-CD one, full english and more content!

Is it safe to say it's ok to pirate Blade Runner on PC? It's a touchy subject but I think it's one that needs to be discussed, seeing as there's zero chance at all of the game being re-released due to the source being lost and the only way to get it is from multiple hand copies at this stage in which the developer will never see money for, etc. Surely this is a case where piracy can be given a nod seeing as people want the content, want to purchase the content, but can never ever do so.

Nex Machina!!

It has one of the best if not the best gritty neon city in the rain at night looking levels ever.

Plus it's an incredible game.

Hmmm - not sure I agree with this one. NM is an incredible game, but I get zero Blade Runner/Cyberpunk vibes from it.

Ruiner seems a closer fit - especially with it's hub town.

This thread brought Observer to my attention - never even heard of this game and was happy to see it on consoles. Going to give it a try soon.

BTW - saw the movie last night (2049) - holy shit was that good!

In addition to all the mentioned examples , you can also look up at Transistor

I dunno, Transistor has such a stylized abstraction to how it approaches cyberpunk aesthetics that it's difficult for me to put it in the same category as a Blade Runner or whatever. There's just too much gloss to it, not nearly enough cultural and structural decay.

It's a fucking cool game though.
