Just started Gears of War 4....does this get any better?

I had a very different experience. Horrible memory leaks forcing me to restart every chapter, textures that don't load in correctly and look PS2 quality, and a black screen crash bug that stopped me from progressing. I actually haven't found a workaround for it yet so I can't even finish the game.

I've tried plenty of things and made posts on their support forums but I seem to be the only person with a broken version of the game. Pretty frustrating.

Yeah, I don't mean to rub it in, but that 100% sounds like a local complication on you end. Every technical analysis/breakdown I've seen has been super positive, and my own experience has been flawless across two machines, including HQ supersampling.

A bit, but overall I found it to be a simply "okay" game. Nowhere near as good as Gears 1 and 3, but not as bad as 2 or whatever the fuck that spin off was called.

Yeah, this is kinda where I ended up on the game. It was enjoyable but not super memorable. The horde mode/tower defence bits were the only bad parts of the game but they were really bad.

Everything else was fine to good and I actually quite liked the new younger characters which was not what I expected going in. Grumpy old man Marcus was still the star of the show ofc.

It felt a bit safe but hopefully, the Coalition will feel more confident and crank it up a notch for the next game.

This game is a bit weird. I don't have much of a problem with the characters so far, they're pretty lifeless, the most entertaining of which seems to be that particular woman's uncle. I'm probably less than 2 hours in right now, and I just got to the part where you go get the fabricator, which just turns out to essentially be a weapons vending machine. It seems like this game is just hoarde mode with robots. Are there any other enemy types or will i just be spending the next 8-10 hours shooting at machines? Where are the grubs? Should I keep playing this?
No

A bit better when you start to kill things that are not these anonymous robots, but is the worst chapter to me after the third one. Single player seems more like a tutorial for horde mode in multiplayer and story stops exactly when start to be interesting.

It was pretty bad all the way through. Just when you think it's getting good it ends. Really poor Gears game from my point of view.

Yep, bad from start to finish. Unimpressive visuals, bad story, sluggish gameplay, horrible setpieces.

Edit : bad choice of words

What are your system specs? I likewise would say gears of war 4 is one of the best PC ports I've ever played. If the issues are unrelated to your specs, I've had to perform a full windows refresh to fix issues with the windows store before. It may help.

6700k@4.8, 2x GTX 970, 16GB DDR4. I did in fact do a full reinstall of Windows, the SSD intended for my system drive came in several months late due to supply constraints. I also reinstalled the game in an attempt to fix it - normally not something I think is worth mentioning but 127gb is crazy.

It's likely the issue is due to SLI, but I specifically held off on buying the game until multi-GPU was supported (it took a while). In benchmarks/horde mode the scaling is amazing and it runs very well, just the campaign goes to hell if you play it too long and breaks at one point...I forget what act, but it's when you
rescue Marcus
. Goes to a black screen and gets stuck while the cutscene audio plays.

I haven't tried it out recently so there may have been a patch or driver fix. If the solution is to disable multi-GPU, then they shouldn't have said they supported it.

I am aware. But there's very, very little information about multi-GPU setups. And I haven't run into anyone with my issues doing that either.

At any rate, this isn't a tech support thread, just saying the PC version wasn't a flawless experience for everyone.

Much like Halo 5,the campaign in Gears was lackluster in terms of plot and character. But, again like Halo, the online mode(s) are sublime and I mean amazingly well crafted. It's something MS is clearly very good at.

I just wish they would give single player stories more effort.

Yep, bad from start to finish. Unimpressive visuals, bad story, sloppy gameplay, horrible setpieces.

This is just bait. The gameplay was excellent, as were the visuals. You know, try speaking from a non hyperbolic point of view and others may take your point seriously.

Protip: When you walk into an area loaded with waist high barriers and glowing ammo, you're about to have another horde mode shootout.

Quite the disappointment on all-fronts.The set-pieces felt over-the-top (and unnecessary) by even Gears of War standards we get this comically and poorly written leader of the Coalition of Ordered Governments that just amounts to being a sunday morning cartoon villain ("I'll get you next time JD, knyuck knyuck!!"). Stuff like the Fabricator and the (
giant robots at the end
) just feel so tacky and out of place that I don't really have an interest in the game universe/story anymore.

Oh and the way they just briefly talk about Anya's
death
without any kind of impact or explanation felt like a huge "screw you" by the writers to fans of her character.

I'll be extremely wary of purchasing the next entry in the series.

I played the GoW ultimate remaster prior to 4, enjoyed it a lot. 4 has felt so repetitive. That said I’ll probably replay it on 1X with 4k /hdr.

Completely by the book and forgettable game. I remember asking my friend about the campaign and he's a huge Gears fan and couldn't remember anything about it.

It does get better, starting from Act III ish, but it never gets truly memorable. Game looks great, but all in all it's nothing but a solid Gears game. After III the long break was needed, but IV reminded me that this formula may have run its course altogether.

To be honest, I was rather disappointed by the visual, and I bought that game full price day #1 on PC mainly for that reason.
I didn't say they were bad, just unimpressive.

As for the gameplay, I have to admit that was a bit hyperbolic, but I didn't like the mobility in general, it feels "too heavy" for me.

I really liked the elevator segment which is toward the middle/end of the game. I also liked the manor. I didn't like it as much as 3 but it was better than 2 IMO.

How far did you get out of interest?

Obviously not the person you quoted, bu I made it as far as
the airplane
before I gave up. I did play a bit of horde initially, but that too, grew stale. I'm glad others enjoyed it, but the game just didn't click with me.

I would honestly say only the lighting and storm effects look particularly good. Other than that, I'd call it fairly unremarkable in comparison to other blockbusters this gen.

Man you must really hate life, so from a game thousands of people spent building to all the money spent, blood sweat and tears and you have nothing positive to say?

No it doesn't, it really is a dull game. Unfortunately the series has never managed the same quality as the first two games.

Only the end portion was significantly better, but it fades away quickly. I'm done with that series. I gave it a fair shake.

This game and Ryse both set the bar for graphics at least when it comes to Xbox exclusives, there are enough reasons to finish it just in the graphics and set piece department IMO. That said, I liked Gears 2 and 3 more but this one is pretty solid. I only felt it was dragging too much when
I was about to save Marcus, but then again it's likely because I wanted him to not die lol
but after that everything was fine again.

Nah, it's a rubbish game that got weirdly good reviews.

There is nothing rubbish about Gears 4 really. Sure its not as memorable as some other games. The overall package is really solid from gameplay, graphics, performance, decent length SP, good Gears MP and Horde. Its 8.5 average is pretty accurate.

You are exactly where I am in the game. I have had it for a while, but just have trouble getting into it. I always forget its installed on my PC.

This campaign is action packed, don't understand what more you would want it's an fps.

Nah, it's just boring and generic, more of the same repetitive shooter nonsense with less interesting characters.

The only way I made it through the campaign was playing it co-op with a friend, otherwise I probably would've sent it back to Boomerang (UK's Gamefly) unfinished. Horde was fine, but that's not enough for me.

The game gets better. The robots are the worst part about it. That said, storywise this is the weakest mainline game. It lacks any emotional impact outside of Marcus. If you liked the old Gears gameplay you will enjoy this one. If not, this game won't change your mind.

It's very mediocre, but polished game. I played on PC and even with amazing visuals and 60 FPS it was not a interesting game. The story even less so, and it leaves with a huge cliffhanger by the end with no answers whatsoever. I would avoid it, but since you already playing it you should finish it.

I never found it more than mediocre gameplay or level design wise for the most part. There's a couple cool moments but that's about it.

It never got better. The opening hours are so bad, and the robot enemies are beyond boring. I should have quit there, and just left the game. The build and defend sections are an absolute slog and each encounter feels the same as the last.

For me, it's one of the most disappointing games ever.
