Just tried Five Guys, does it get better than this?

I'm also convinced that those who praise 5 Guys probably live in the fly-over states and are missing out on some better burger joints.

There was a quick little Five Guys boom here in Tampa. As soon as I had even heard of them, they became nearly as common as Starbucks overnight. Half of those stores have since closed though, but there are still plenty around. It's good shit.

Five Guys is pretty good and they also give you a shit-ton of fries regardless of what size you order. Also like the free peanuts while you wait for your food.

If you come from Germany like me and are in the US for vacation, you need to try five guys. It's the Holy grail of fast food for a German.

I had some today for the first time. Simple burgers and fries combo. Lettuce, mayonnaise, and onions. It was alright, nothing special really. I don't understand what all the fuss is about. It's incredibly greasy, and doesn't even taste as good as a McDonalds McChicken or Big Mac burger.

I been there once (canada) and i didnt see what all the fuss was about, plus theyre way overpriced.. Want a combo? $12+

Only good thing is they give you a tonne of fries

I honestly don't get the big deal about Five Guys. I've been there a couple of times, and it was an entirely ordinary burger. The only exceptional thing about it was the outrageous price

I make better burgers at home, cheaper and faster.

It's the most tasteless food I've put in my mouth in a long time. They literally don't add seasoning to the meat. The bun is the most inoffensive and insubstantial bread I've had since Wonder Bread. It's almost like they're afraid salt and pepper are too spicy. I think the only way you can get a Five Guys burger that tastes like anything is to pay for peppers or pickles and slather it in ketchup.

On the positive side, the ingredients are fresh and warm.

I think I posted the same in here somewhere. I felt like saying it again.

OK, I complain about the franchises preparing the food differently, but you're not supposed to pay extra for any of the burger toppings.

Five Guys is alright. I don't find it anything special. Also its ridiculously overpriced.

Burger/Fries/Drink will cost you like 16 bucks.

I've actually been talking with a few friends about this since I made my first post on this thread, and after that, I think the price thing needs to be debunked. Let's look at the menu of the local franchise here (local prices may vary):

First thing to consider: the "default" burger comes with two patties. The "little" burger is therefore the price baseline, since no other burger place I know of defaults to double meat.

The "little" fry option is relatively new (and possibly franchise specific), so I'll understand people who haven't been in a long time not knowing about it. I tried it, and I still think it's too much food for a single person; despite being the smallest size offered, it's larger than McDonalds's largest offering. For this post's purpose I'll use it, but I would normally feed two people with a single order of fries (and if I'm eating alone, I skip the fries).

That's $4.39 + 2.89 + 2.49 for a regular drink = $9.77. And this meal is rated at just over a thousand calories, not even including the drink.

I have complaints about Five Guys, but price isn't one of them.

Five Guys isn't that great. Soggy brown fries and a standard quickie burger. I also can't stand how they basically take your fries and burger, put them neatly in a bag, and then take the fry shovel and literally dump ANOTHER load of fries all over everything so you actually need to dig through hot, loose fries to get your burger out.

It sure beats McDonald's / Burger King / etc, but definitely does NOT beat Shake Shack. To me, Shake Shack is the platonic ideal of junky fast food, it's like a cartoon come to life.

OP you need to hit up an IN and OUT burger in California sometime. Its legendary and 5 guys is similar but not quite as good.

Also I have nothing but positive things to say about Steak N Shake.

One of my favourite passages from Roger Ebert's memoirs:

The Steakburger is a symphony of taste and texture. Steak n’ Shake has always boasted “We grind all the select cuts – sirloin, porterhouse, ribs, filet.” This they do in “our own Government-Inspected Commissary,” located in, of course, Normal, Illinois. The sandwich is Served on a Toasted Bun. If you order onion, it will be a perfect slice of sweet Bermuda. If you order pickles, you will get two thin slices, side by side. Mustard, relish, tomato, lettuce can all be added. When you bite into the Steakburger, it is al dente all the way through: toasted bun, crispy patty, onion, pickle, crunch, crunch, crunch. The Steakburger has remained unchanged since 1945.

My Steak n’ Shake fetish is not unique. On an early visit to the Letterman show, I said to David during the commercial break, “I hear you’re from Indianapolis, home of the head office of the Steak n’ Shake.”

“In sight, it must be right” he said. Our eyes locked in communion.
“Four ways to enjoy,” I said.
“Car, table, counter or takhomasak,” he replied.
“Specializing in selected foods…”
“With a desire to please the most discriminating.”
“Thank you for your patronage.”

“Signed A.H Belt (founder),” he said, and we shared a nod of great satisfaction.

I look forward to visiting one on my holiday in June :)

Five Guys is one of my favorites in terms of fast burgers. We have a place called Smash Burger near me that is just a little better though. Fantastic place.

Having lived near Steak n' Shakes my whole life, I hope you aren't disappointed.
]But I would temper my expectations. :/

Living in London 5 guys is c grade at best. What company boasts that they cook their burgers well done? They clearly have no faith in their meat. It is one step up from McDonald's.

So.. uh, what are these London fast food joints rocking Medium-rare burgers? 'Cause I missed them on my last couple trips.

just tried this for the first time tonight

got the bacon cheeseburger..

what the fuck is up with them just putting some shitty processed cheese on the burger?

Why am I paying $10 for you to put the some shit ass "cheese" on my burger? the fuck?

aside from that it was okay? nothing special, certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I'm not sure how pricing is in the US, but in the UK Five Guys is insanely overpriced.
In Glasgow, Five Guys is a few doors down from a smaller place called Bread Meats Bread which does better burgers, better fries, serves beer and is significantly cheaper. I still don't understand why people would go into Five Guys over it, beyond the intial trying new things reason.

Also why do Five Guys fries taste like they're made entirely out of Salt?

Just had one yesterday, Burgista Bros. in Sheppard's Bush;

Best I've had so far is Bleecker St. burgers in Spitalfields Market, though - well worth checking out;

Gonna try their Bleecker Black next time I'm down that way, it's a double cheeseburger with a fried slice of black pudding in the middle.

This thread made me miss Five Guys :( I moved to Tokyo earlier this year, used to work in NY just next to the West Village Five Guys. Used to go there all the time. At least there's a Shake Shack a short bike ride away.

Late to the party ranking:

Five Guys > Shake Shack > In N Out >>>>> EU/JP McD's >>>>>>>>>>>> US McD's (which is somehow not the worst on my list, that would be Chile McD's).

I'm flying to Paris on Friday, I heard they were opening a Five Guys there this year... but I'll probably head over to Mamie Burger instead.

Ugh I'm really craving a burger right now.
