Just watched End of Evangelion

I watched the first episode on VHS in the 90s and promptly stopped watching the series. A few weeks ago I finally forced myself to watch the entire series to witness what everyone complained about. Valid complaints indeed.

You need to watch End of Evangelion

Except for the menu! The menu is dope. But yeah, non-anamorphic transfer is a big problem.

Yeah it sounds really dumb but I actually get teary eyed when I see the menu lol. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring and all the footage. It's like a sensation of pure awe.

nothin lynch about evangelion

I dont really get why people just associate everything weird or hard to understand to david lynch, his stuff is very distinct

also this is still way better than the 3.33 crapfest

I need to lie down. This is the strangest feeling I have in my body.
that feeling, feels... familiar.

A friend got hold of a fan subbed VHS tape soon as it was available back in the day, and we were all suitably amazed. We then caught a packed house screening at a university anime club several months later, and hearing the exclamations of shock at various points was awesome.

3.33 was great. I don't want to turn this into a 3.33 thread but it's a great eva movie. Maybe my favourite of the 3. could PM you my reasons why sometime lol :)

Also, obligatory:

That sounds awesome. I don't watch a lot of anime, but if I ever spot a theatre screening of End of Evangelion, I'd be down.

Episode 18 is the episode that left the biggest impact on me.

Those screams man...those screams.

Episode 15 Those Women Longed for the Touch of Other's Lips, and Thus Invited Their Kisses is my favourite as I've said in many eva threads :)

its amazing how many people were taken by it. all i got from both eva and eoe is that i wasted my time,.

Oh man... This movie.

The first time I saw this I has having problems with headaches and a doctor prescribed me this medication that used to be used as an antidepressant. I think this was back in early highschool, I would have been around 14-15. Didn't help for my headaches but it made me depressed as shit. Then I decided to lighten the mood by watching this.

I wanted to kill myself.

That movie really does take, like, 3 damn days to recover from.

Appropriate song, even.

SO WITH SADNESS IN MY HEART
I FEEL THE BEST THING I COULD DO
IS END IT ALL
AND LEAVE FOREVER

WHAT'S DONE IS DONE IT FEELS SO BAD
WHAT ONCE WAS HAPPY NOW IS SAD
I'LL NEVER LOVE AGAIN
MY WORLD IS ENDING

lol damn :(

As I said on post 39, I felt totally the opposite. It felt like I had a reason to live lol.

Eh 3.33 seems universally hated by gaf, just look at the 3.0 spoiler thread. I don't hate it as much as some people but it has some questionable writing in parts. Though the premise of the movie is pretty ballsy it kinda goes downhill from there and half way through I felt like the movie was basically buildup to Eva: Final

It's not THAT complicated:

* Misato finds out that EVA project has other purpose
* NERV is being invaded by the JSDF under SEELE's order, initiating massacre, fulfilling the prophecy that the 18th Angel, Humans, are indeed the cruelest Angel of them all.
* Rei III seems to gain self-realization after all of her bitter experiences with Gendou.
* Shinji is in full funk mode resulting him to fap himself to a comatose Asuka
* Misato forces Shinji to pilot EVA again, telling him that it's okay to make mistake as long as he knows why he made those mistakes and try his best not to repeat them again. She conks out.
* Asuka snaps out of her coma, goes berserk against MP EVAs but is eventually overwhelmed and is (assumed) dead.
* Shinji's mind snaps out when he saw Asuka's fate and initiated 3rd impact.
* Instrumentality begins, Rei III rejects Gendou, and merge with Lilith on her own accord. She then liquidifies every humans so they can all become one whole Lilith again.
* Shinji is eventually assimilated too. Much to his dismay, however, instrumentality can't solve his self-esteem issue. Instead, he ends up having to confront his own fucked up/low self-esteem, imagining that everyone actually hates him.
* Kaworu + Rei due to their time with Shinji agrees that despite his flaws, Shinji is the best person to determine the fate of humanity.
* Kaworu + Rei offers Shinji a chance to keep things as is or to revert everyone as humans. Despite the hurt he got from other humans, Shinji felt that he'd rather see them again than existing as one entity together.
* As a result of his wish, Lilith splits and instrumentality is canceled. Everyone who wants to return to their previous individual form can do so.
* The ending reveals that the purpose of EVA-01 was to act as new Noah's Ark in case the sun, the moon, and the earth cease to exist. EVA-01 can live forever even after those stars perish.
* At the end, it seems only Shinji and Asuka want to return to their individuality. Shinji, still thinking that Asuka actually hates him, started to choke him. She, however, stroke his face, implying that most of his issues are on his mind. She doesn't really hate him. Well, not really. She prob still thinks he's a bit pathetic thus her "I feel sick".

THE END

That pic is pretty hilarious lol. But I hope nobody in this thread actually genuinely hates Shinji?

I hate him, but I think he's a fantastic character. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Sort of hard to forgive him for a lot of stuff, especially by EoE.

Quoting my own question because this thread is digging up old wounds.

I think it's portrayed as a bad thing in the end, as without any barriers we can't be hurt anymore but we no longer have the opportunity to love, either. Shinji ultimately rejects it after realizing this and
recreates the world using EVA-01 and Adam/Lillith, leading to Rebuild.

Also, though your question is about how it's portrayed in the anime,
Evangelion 2 for the PS2/PSP suggest that there are multiple versions of instrumentality that could take place. It can be inferred that the version of instrumentality seen in EoE was Seele's failed attempt at their plot in which Rei initiates instrumentality, where in Rebuild it appears as though Seele is dead, meaning that Rebuild's instrumentality (if it occurs at all) will either be initiated on Gendo or Shinji's terms.

I do, he is the most obnoxious whiny little bitch ever to grace animation.

He is a little better in the Rebuild movies though.

Do you think instrumentality is ultimately portrayed as a good thing or a bad thing?

I would say it is portrayed as a bad thing considering Shinji chooses to reject it at the end of the film. That's why I have never been able to understand when people say that EoE had a downer ending. If you just look at all the death and destruction then sure, but the film is about Shinji ultimately coming to terms with his fear of hurt and rejection. He comes to understand that the potential of finding happiness in another person outweighs the potential pain. It also gives everyone a potential out of instrumentality. The film is more bittersweet than outright depressing.

Negative right? The point being that instrumentality is all about erasing all of the insecurities in our hearts and becoming one. The whole point was that Shinji realised that this was wrong. It's okay to feel pain and its essential to allowing us as beings to grow. To have restrictions and to have other people we can compare yourself to. In doing so we become ourselves.

Seele wanted to become merged inside an Evangelion unit with the S² Engine. They wanted to place only their own souls within the Eva. The point being that once they were merged with a god like being, and with the Lance destroyed (that being the only tool that can hurt the Eva) they would have pretty much created an immortal being that is merged with the human soul which would then represent the pinnacle of human existence, and it would exist throughout eternity.

You know what the most fucked up thing is about EoE? That the hype convinced me to buy the Death & Rebirth VHS (yes, fuckin VHS at the time) which retailed at $30.

I remember watching this when I was younger and I was okay with the series until the very end where things just made no damn sense at all. At the time I figured it was the translation. It wasn't official. It was a fansub. Then I saw it with the official subtitled translation and dubbing it still didn't make a damn bit of sense to me. I just washed my hands of the series at that point and didn't look back. It's always amazed me that people were so crazy about it and would be willing to rebuy it over and over again.

Now a series that I did very much enjoy that I guess is similar from what I remembered of Eva and how people try to negatively hit as Eva-lite was RahXephon. Fully understandable and enjoyable.

The Komm Susser Tod sequence is my favorite part of the whole movie.
The movie,on a whole though, is still pretty weird.Watching it after staying up all night might have enhanced the whole experience for me though.

This is exactly how I watched it the first time.

You'd be crazy not to hate Shinji. Worst main character ever.

Kaji should have been the main character.

avatar quote.

But Kaji is awesome. No one denies this.

Possibly my favorite movie ever. It left me in a funk for days afterward when I first watched it in high school. I try to watch it at least once year and I'm still blown away every time.
