Just when I thought I couldn't dislike Will Smith any more...

I understand where Will was coming from, OP I think you're being a bit overly critical. You can't actually imagine what it's like to be in Will's shoes. He actually meant what he said, his self-worth and self-perception was tied to his performance at the box office, but he realized life doesn't just end when the string of box office hits becomes rocky.

if you take this literally, it's amazing

I can. I imagine it's pretty nice to say fuck you, I got mine, and my kids are alright.

This also.

That "I'm still a good person" line...where does that come from? If not from inflated ego, where?

He's worth an absurd amount of money and he's acting like he was "broken" over one box office bomb.

Seriously? "I'm still me."

What does that even mean? Yes you're still you. In your however many mansions and condos in however many countries. I've just never heard a celebrity drone on quite in that way about a failure, as if his ego won't let it sink in.

This man is so self-absorbed to the point of being out of touch with reality...
What in the fuck kind of nonsense is he on about? Fucking hell this dude is so deluded and full of himself.

Dude...what the hell are you on about? For the first time he had a big budget movie fail astronomically when he used to be able to depend on being a star that could sell movies. I imagine it would be like failing a performance review at work. It probably going to fuck up your whole world which has been centered around your career for a bit.

...

Except a performance review at work could cost you your livelihood.

What, exactly, is at stake for this man and why would he be so bent out of shape about it? You're a goddamn millionaire superstar. Shrug your shoulders and say "Oh well" like most sincerely humbled actors are (which are not many).

How well versed are you in the mental states of "most sincerely humbled actors?"

Just sounds like a man explaining how he dealt with a recent personal failure. I'm not seeing what's so bad about his comments.

Be nicer to each other. What you're doing is poison.

I see that 'confidence' and 'black people' is too potent a combination for some folks to handle, yep.

...

...

Yeah. That's totally it.

Get bent. The last thing I need is this kind of inference. Seriously, don't bring that shit to my table.

I despise being accused of making it a racial thing.

It's worded in typical Hollywood speak, but nothing wrong with the sentiment. You ever fail at work? How did that make you feel? I imagine this would be akin to a CEO who was restructured into a lower position of power. It's got to sting to realize you're not top dog any longer.

Not that I'm going to cry any tears for one of the richest people in the world, but the sentiment is something most people will feel at some point in their lives.

At least someone here will abstain from that. Christ.

So you're saying people can only care about failure when it has significant effects on their wallet? Wtf?

Anyone with an ounce of pride in their work is going to take failure to heart.

Didn't Smith also bomb with Men in Black 3 before After Earth?. And he did take himself out of the game seven years prior to MIB 3 if I am not mistaken.

I don't know what's got him so shook.

He's got a shot at redemption in Suicide Squad at least.

Yeah this is a really weird thread. I cant empathize with someone's huge failure in the course of their life because they have money.

I love the sentiment. Because at the end of the day it's true. But this guy just isn't genuine in my eyes at the end of the day. Whatever, me.

I like how my words keep getting twisted here. Is this how we carry on a discussion, GAF?

The man suggested that a box office failure was indicative of some sort of identity crisis; as if he suddenly ceased to be the man he was. As if having a movie bomb could suddenly turn him into a bad person. He measures his self-worth in the monetary success of a movie.

Or maybe I'm a crazy asshole and I'm reading too much into it.

That people have a beef with Will Smith is news to me lol. Must be a GAF thing. He's like one of the most affable celebrities ever. Completely inoffensive and calculated with every move. His kids are weird, sure, but it's hardly anything to hate him over.

None of that is very surprising for a guy who got famous and rich early and kept it up for a long time. Lots of artists have had a hard time separating themselves from the art they make, and seeing themselves as failures if their work suddenly takes a critical or commercial hit.

You realize the entertainment industry is all he's ever known right? Having a film bomb both critically and commercially when you're used to carrying films on your name alone is pretty jarring when the majority of your life has revolved around selling yourself as a product.

I don't know. I think some people are just more dedicated to their career than others. Careers define some people, believe it or not. Consider athletes for example

Oh No. Someone insulted Will Smith. However will we cope with the injustice? How will he? I guess he'll go cry in his mansion, wiping his tears with the cash he has laying around.

Seriously I ain't defending Smith and his family, they can just throw money at the box office again to make another movie.

Can someone help me see OP's problem with Will Smith? Because I genuinely can't figure it out.

It all stems from the Howard Stern takedown of him on his radio show after that (insane) Oprah Winfrey/Will Smith interview. Ever since I heard that man talk in that interview, I just decided I can't stand him and his ego.

I'm sure a lot of posters commenting on this are doing so within the context of his recent series of interviews where he comes across oas very egotistical. In light of that, this comes off as confirming whatever impressions he had previously made.

Yeah you're reading way too much into it.

He's joking. Scientology can do some weird shit, but not like this.

Add me to the list of people not getting the problem. He's used to succeeding, and failed. His self-worth was tied up in his career, and this failure made him feel awful. Then, eventually, he realized that his value as a person wasn't tied to his most recent opening weekend and found that he was still the same person he always was.

i thought it was sarcasm but the op is being serious?

you know something's wrong with your self esteem if someone not lowering their self worth due to a bad movie gets to you this much.

Can you link us some examples? I've never gotten this impression so I'd love to be enlightened.

Sounds like words from some sort of quack religion.

It just means he is trying to enjoy his work rather than stress over the results. Just worded weirdly.

I don't think he said anything particularly wrong in OP's post. Perhaps it can be phrased a bit more naturally, that's all.

did anyone listen to the this american life podcast last week? the one about internet trolls? there was this one really assholish troll who said he did it because his victim was too happy with her self.

well maybe that's a common thread :P

Who's asking you to?

Once I had a dream I met Will Smith and he recommended a great place to get Philly cheese steaks so we went and ate Philly cheese steaks together.

Er... what I meant to say was there's nothing wrong with what he said. He put a lot of effort into this particular movie because he wants his son to become a star and all that effort blew up in his face, which happened to be a first for him. I'd be pretty shocked too if throughout my whole life everything I touched turned to gold, and then suddenly something I touched-- something important to me-- turned into a big pile of poop. I'd wonder, am I broken now? Will everything I touch now turn to poop?

It probably didn't meet up to expectations, but calling it a bomb is a stretch.
