Kamiya gives excellent answer about Okami's easy difficulty

One thing that alays bugged me about Okami wa the simple difficulty especially in relation to Kamiya's other games. Its actually been sort of a mystery for fans of Okami, and one of the reasons Ive had trouble replaying it. So I decided to ask him

I know its dumb making a thread about a single tweet, but I thought it was very interesting that he considered Okami more than a simple action adventure game and actually a folklore tale

I've played Okami when it first came out on PS2 and I don't remember it being easy ...

I thought it was a masterpiece at the time and I still do. I've bought the HD version on PS3 last year and I haven't played it yet. Maybe I'll find it " too " easy this time but I doubt it.

All the people complaining about Okami's difficulty never attempted to get all the stray beads.

Kamui's demon gates... *shudder*

Haha, I vaguely remember that. I 100%ed the game on my first and only playthrough. It's actually a pretty decent challenge.

I really should go back and replay it with all the cool stuff I unlocked. (Unlimited ink, aww yeah!)

Yeah, I mean, the game had some parts that would definitely be considered challenging, but I don't think anybody can liken the game's difficulty to say, Viewtiful Joe/etc.

I love the game though, and while I clearly remember thinking "holy crap it isn't over yet?" while playing it, I never thought it overstayed its welcome. I enjoyed every moment of it.
cuz your mom is already difficult.

Actually, it would have been "I was inspired by your mom."
It's basically Zelda. If combat was really difficult, it'd be a huge slog.
I won't say that Okami is *harder* than Zelda but I do feel like Okami's combat required a bit more engagement from me in that it had a bit more width and depth in some of the tactics.

lol at the two clowns fishing for an angry Kamiya response. Like, really?

As an aside, I vaguely remember there being side quest challenges that had a ramped up difficulty? Am I just making that up?

Game was not difficult even going for 100% just long. Really liked the game but it definitely over stays its welcome. The only difficult part was the last blockman where you had memorize and hit all the cracks.

I'm probably one of the few that was happy with the length of the game. Everytime a new chapter started I got so happy.

I won't deny that the whole part where you travel 100 years back and fight Orochi again was a bit too much, but I still enjoyed it.

That and the fact that the game is all about the atmosphere. I never understood why people complained about the intro.

It wasn't hard, but that didn't bother me. Neither did the notorious length of the game either. One of my all time favourites. Excellent answer, Kamiya haha.

PS3 > PS2 > Wii

the Okami Wii pointer controls were unfortunately coded in 15 minutes by an intern who did not understand the term "deadzone"

For some reason the required drawing accuracy on PS3 feels much more forgiving too. For things like blockhead also, which felt much easier on my remaster playthrough.

Thanks for the advice, all. I'll pick up the PS3 copy at some point then and give that a shot prior to trying the Wii copy I have.

I didn't own any console when this came out and never played it. Does anyone know if it's on PlayStation Now? I'm away from home or I'd check myself.

Difficult combat wouldn't have made Okami more enjoyable.

My enjoyment of Okami stemmed from exploration, charming characters, and ability puzzles. Combat never felt like a focus, and rightly so.
