Kay plays Dark Souls II: the anti-Jeff Green

Looking forward to see the fight against
False King Allant
. I think that is the only boss in the Souls serie where dying actually have an impact besides losing your souls.

Watching this game reminds me of how big Demon's Souls felt. I miss the world tendency stuff—seems it's replacement was covenants, which is fine because the tendency was extremely opaque and hard to figure out, but the way it introduced replay ability through very organic means (not just, get key go back through door you came across earlier) was really cool and unique.

I think Demon's Souls still has the best "first proper level" in a Souls game. So much of it is spent showing the various ways the game will trick you and try to exploit your moments of absentmindedness. Not to mention that the atmosphere's really thick, Undead Burg and especially Forest of Fallen Giants just don't compare.

Damn Demon had a lot of cutscenes and was much more overt in its story, plus the items/souls descriptions weren't as rich as Dark Souls.
Didn't remember this, but i don't mind it, to be honest.

Yeah, it's great. But even then, it was praised for having a hands off story. There really aren't a lot of cutscenes. Just some in the beginning and of course, every boss gets a little intro, which is fundamental in creating fear and respect for them. Way more memorable than most bosses in either the other games.

These cutscenes and story are just so damn good. I forgot how great this was, even though I call it my game of the generation.

Dark Souls is great, but this is almost perfection. So atmospheric.. Such a cool plot.

Absolutely.

Yeah everything concerning plot, mood and such, Demon was king, i think.
In terms of Gameplay i like Dark's approach more (Estus, bonfires, spell uses, interconnected world etc).

You can lose your levels.
Indeed. I actually ended up using the poison cloud trick (you can kill the boss without trigger the fight, so the boss is just standing still, but still taking damage) because i died too many times hehe. I've gotten better at dodging now though, especially after playing much Dark Souls 1 and 2.

I think it was pretty clear from a specific grab animation that the Four Kings were supposed to have the same effect but I guess they decided against it.

Casual Souls and whatnot.
I'm kinda torn if that was a good idea or not. In one way, it can be annoying as fuck if you die too many times, but on the other hand, it makes the boss fight more tense.

I can't wait until she gets to
Astraea
. Her reaction to
Sif was already amazing to watch
.
Astraea
will probably elicit something similar.

Hell, since Kay pays much more attention to lore than a lot of people, her reaction might even be stronger.

Edit: No new Kay again until Wednesday. But she did say that she's overnighting a new copy of the game. Hopefully an actual North American release version.

This'll probably mean she'll have to play back to where she is, since I doubt the saves are compatible, but she'll blaze through it if she's not commentating and exploring things she's already seen.

Wait why is Kay not doing it till Weds, is she pulling a jeff green now?

Her comment from 3 hours ago when she posted the latest video:

I know it's short, but I wanted to post something for you all to get the week started. I'm in the city today so won't be recording until tomorrow (Tuesday). Next full video should appear Wednesday.

She'll probably be in both over the course of the day. I imagine she could get through both with one hand behind her back and blindfolded.

I really like how that whole area plays out with the dialogue and music. Looking forward to it.

edited in your warning.
Just to be safe.

eDIT: Does the Asian copy also have another voice acting? I didn't remember the Maiden in Black to have that voice.
eDIT2: Nah, maybe not, but i didn't remember the accent to be so thick.

Does anyone know why she's playing the Asian version?

For someone who enjoys lore, a rather poorly translated version seems like the wrong choice.

Didn't realize this but
Garl Vinland
's aromor looks a lot like
Velstadt
's.

After re-listening to the dialogue of
Maiden Astraea
again. I feel like this will make Kay really not want to kill them. I wonder if she will assume that they are optional.

Needs more spoiler tags. But also:
<_< You mean Velstadt's armor looks a lot like Garl. =p It was a homage after all!

Demon's Souls' has probably overall the best story in the Souls series, and definitely the best ending (
I love the Maiden's "talk" with the Old One, the Kings true pathetic form and the ending music
). The motivations of the protagonist, antagonist and supporting characters (
The Maiden in Black, The Monumental
) are also crystal clear in a way they are not in the other Souls games.
Demon's Souls' lore also blows Dark Souls 2's Copy-paste out of the water, and it's just a shame that Kay's copy seems to suffer from translation errors.

I'm way behind and only on Episode 61 of Dark Souls. Did she ever explain why she didn't give Fire a chance in that playthrough? She loved firebombs.

DS2's story is the best of the lot, as far as I'm concerned. The NPCs aren't nearly as well-written, and the atmosphere is hurting compared to the first two, but plot-line and lore-wise, I prefer DS2's story. But that's just picking my favorite of three amazing options. All of them have great stories.

Her fight with the
Tower Knight is absolutely nostalgic in a way that you just watch her figure it all out.

I still feel this is the quintessential Souls Boss. The presentation and scale as the first true big bad boss is a moment no one could ever forget. It is the moment Souls sinks its claws deep and never let's go.

Could you timestamp for me? I don't want to spoil myself on the game but I'd be curious to hear what she has to say.

Basically:

Demon's Souls can be unpredictable without being unfair.
Dark Souls II resorts to cheap tactics and still feels more predictable.

The example used was one of the enemies in DeS, that rolls around a lot, has a varied attack pattern, and is very quick, so as to make it hard to get a backstab or a parry in, whereas in DkS2 they used cheap design methods, like having enemies spin on place like record players, and restricted a lot the parry window in terms of active frames, without getting really creative with enemy behavior.

Oh man, the newest vid. It's where I wanted to see her explore the most, but I didn't expect it so soon. Hnnnng.

Crescent Falchion.

Though I could probably disappoint ye all with: She wouldn't have used it. It's a magic item, and she will try to be as faithful as possible to Faith. /pun.

If anything will be a cakewalk it will be if she finds the
Dragon Longsword+1

Latria is so rad. I personally didn't care for the structure at all, I found it needlessly convoluted and it played harshly on my desire to check everything, but the atmosphere is just incredible, and that goes for the second part, which I vastly preferred in terms of design too.

Also, dat stretch.

Whenever I watch/listen to Kay play Souls, my girlfriend visibly goes into an acute jealous rage and her mood turns sour. "She talks like you." I can only safely watch Kay at work now.

Latria is the best Souls level, in terms of atmosphere, but Demon is just full of them.

I mean, take 2-2 for example, with the
super narrow tunnels.

Can't wait for Bloodborne, basically what i wanted, in terms of setting and atmosphere out of a Soul game, since i played Demon.
Never like the more high fantasy inclination Dark Soul had, especially prominent in Dark 2.

Yep she's gonna end up liking this way more than Dark Souls 2. As it should be. Cant wait for her to get to 3-2. Its amaaazing.

When she described the difference in combat between Demons and Dark 2 I couldnt agree more.
