Well, CES is a "real" tech conference ; another proof that gaming conferences like E3 are more a show, now. Many people probably thought it was inappropriate for a CEO to act like an internet pop star (or make allusions to it). A feeling that I share btw, let showmen do the show and businessmen do business.

There is a difference between making an interesting conference or reducing yourself to the lowest commoner because we can't expect from a CES audience to have a higher attention span than a small child.
