Kazuma Kaneko's first new drawing in seven years

Kaneko's work on early Atlus games is underrated too, I feel. That pixel art in SMT1 was pretty much all done by him, I believe.

Kaneko is probably the very last member of the founders of Atlus still left at the company now.

So I take it that Atlus are now going to rely solely on Doi from here on in to do all of the demon designs, since Persona 5 is still using Kaneko's designs from the PS2 era.

End of an era, I guess, sad to see Kaneko "retire" but at least we got so many games with his art (and will continue to do so, seeing as how Atlus don't seem to want to diverge from his work seeing P5 as the example of that).

did he not do the illustrations for the Trauma Center series?

Since every game's cast looks like they share the same style with whatever demon-battling teenagers are also around in another part of town.

That series (the later entries at least) were all done by Masayuki Doi, who worked under Kaneko's tutelage for years on mainline SMT as "additional artist" whilst Kaneko did the main character designs, demon designs and art direction. It's no wonder people get Doi's art mixed up with Kaneko's, the most notable difference is that Kaneko's is more gothic and tends to use a darker palette whereas Doi's is more colourful (or as some like to say, "more anime", I tend to dislike such generalisations).

Whilst Doi's work on SMTIV Apocalypse seems to be very good and very much a good impersonation of Kaneko's design, I will miss Kaneko art and his sheer brilliance on art direction. Next to Akihiko Yoshida as my favourite game artist.

That's what I'm referring to and you cannot deny that this decision has shaped both Megami Tensei and Kaneko's art as a whole. I'm not meaning to disrespect Kaneko. Kaneko is a great artist and I love his modern work, but he is not peerless. Soejima's and Kaneko's art developed into different directions, but it's incredibly obvious that they influenced each other immensly. That's just how art works.

I don't see any Soejima influence in Kaneko's work and I don't think Atlus would have never switched to photoshop airbrushing like the rest of the industry did if it hadn't been for Soejima. No disrespect!

Who did the character design for P3 and P4? I always find it interesting that although P3's design is more "immature", I like it a lot more than P4's. Those super long necks, can't get enough!

Persona 3, 4 and 5 is Shigenori Soejima.
He's been doing both art direction and character design for Persona (and Catherine) since P3.

Never forget

They're not as good unfortunately. Soejima always felt the weakest of the bunch imo.

I never liked Kaneko's artsyle for normal characters. They all look like porcelain dolls, with dead white skin and features I dont really like, like black lips, tatoos, painted fingernails....
I understand is a style other people adore (im not saying he is a bad artist, nothing further from the truth), but I prefer more cartoony and stylized things.

Soejima is totally up my alley becuase I think he creates really good character designs that cater my interests more, and I think he makes really great anime style faces (when he doesnt go overboard stupidly like Junpei's neck in Arena). It reminds me of style similar to things like Cowboy Bebop, good quality late 90's instead of moe blobs and the like.

I do like Kaneko's style a lot for Personas and monster designs though. I think it suits them more.

Yeah Soejima used to use similar techniques as Kaneko (look at his Stella Deus artwork and some of the P3 concepts) but nowadays he definitely does his own thing. I do wonder if Kaneko would have changed his art style again, like he did when they moved to PS2 and what it would look like. His work on Strange Journey, Devil Survivor series (for those demons he designed) and Raidou 2 did look quite different from the his earlier work on PS2.

I wouldn't be surprised if he actually had a hand in designing the 3D demon models in Persona 5.
He's been working with experimental 3D versions of his designs since Persona 2, and Atlus already mentioned the difficulty of making hd 3D versions of those designs.

.

It's cherry-picking a bit to say Kaneko's human characters are all gothed-out. But yes, his style doesn't really fit with modern anime stylization. He tends to draw softer, more naturalistic human forms.

Besides, why have art that looks like other games' art? Shouldn't we strive for unique styles and personality in games? Otherwise it's not much of an artistic medium.

edit: it's not to say I don't like the designs of the other Atlus artists; the Persona and Catherine designs are, for the most part, solid stuff. But I appreciate when games have a more distinct artistic voice, and Kaneko brought that in spades.

Exactly why it fits. They have one foot in The Other.

Still the best artist Atlus has ever had. I love Soejima's stuff but I always preferred Kaneko's unique style. Wish he'd do art for another game again.

I hope it ends up released in the US like the recent Persona artbooks. As far as I know the previous Kaneko artbooks are only available if you import from Japan, right?

previous kaneko artbooks are available for exorbitant prices on yahoo auctions basically

THIS IS INSANE I CANT BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING

Can't wait for Kazuma Kaneko Works Vol IV :D

Devil Summoner is da best <3

I'm assuming they'll do Soul Hackers as Vol V, and then the Raidou games as VI and VII?

Hoping it'll lead up to a third Raidou game :3 haha

It's how corporations work. The more successful you are, the higher you move up in the company, and the less likely you are to do what made you successful. Can't blame the guy either. Who wouldn't want to move on up to the more luxurious jobs that pay better and have way better hours?

Isn't he actually very vocal about hating the direction the series has taken, or at least persona?

no, not at all, there's some interview where he talks about how he stepped down as the persona series artist bc he wanted that series to be more approachable and accessible bc his art direction is too amazing for the average japanese teenager or whatever

he's been completely silent about shin megami tensei ever since his last round of interviews ever (for strange journey seven years ago). other staff have spoken on his behalf to say that he's still involved in approvals and broad scenario stuff for the series.

I love his designs in Raidou 2. Dahn, Geirin, Nagi and Raidou all look badass as hell. Probably my favorite SMT game in terms of vibe and aesthetic.
