Even if they could find this out in an investigation after the swatting, the problem I've seen is that people are usually making these calls from outside the jurisdiction of the police dept they are calling in the swatting to, which makes further investigation much more difficult. Also, given that this is the internet, swatting calls can come from anywhere.
