Someone said something about how the Hollywoodization was a good thing 'cos of more competition/higher game budgets. Sorry...these days there seems to be less and less publishers and more and more cookie cutter crap. Not saying there's no good games, not saying there wasn't crap games back in the NES/SNES era's...BUT...at least back then there were more publishers making more money and thus a broader variety of games/genre's.
I, Robot is the first game to use polygon graphics, specifically flat-shaded surfaces. It was released in 1984 by Atari.Sapienshomo said:Pffft, Tons of Sega Genesis games used polygons long before the SNES did in 1993. Even SNES games used polyons before Star Fox. StarFox was merely the first to run them at anything faster than 3 fps.
SolidSnakex said:Dude back then they were making games based on characters from food franchises. There's no such thing as a "Hollywoodization" of the industry. This shit goes right in the same can as "diminishing returns".

DrGAKMAN said:And? I just remember there being way more prosperous publishers back then making tons of games in more variety of franchises. Some of you may like to ignore that and clamour for less publishers/less variety and instantly ignore the golden age by simply saying: "har har, 7UP Cool Spot, McKid's, Yo Noid! am I right?"
DrGAKMAN said:There's crap from back then AND today, but at least back then they were making money and giving us variety, as oppossed to the make or break cookie cutter crap of today.
Amir0x said:What? More games/genres? Yes, I'd be so happy to go back to the era of five trillion cookie cutter platformers. It is so much better then the generation with five billion cookie cutter war sims and sports games.
And the "broader variety of genres" is just factually incorrect.
DrGAKMAN said:Matter of opinion...
SolidSnakex said:Yah only if today companies could make money off releasing crap.
Amir0x said:No actually it isn't. I can name probably 10 genres that simply did not exist back in the SNES/NES era. Every genre that existed in the SNES/NES era still exists today. Therefore, larger variety of genres = factually incorrect. Only an idiot would try to argue otherwise. 3D alone represented a huge jump in the amount of genres we had.
DrGAKMAN said:Hey guys, let's focus on the crap games from back then, har har, 'cos we ALL know gaming never started until Sony graced us with the PlayStation. I mean seriously, Castlevania, Mega Man, Metroid, Street Fighter II, Mario...all that crap was so wack back in the day yahermey?
SolidSnakex said:What's your point here? All those franchises still exist, none of those companies have fgone out of business because they make quality games. And no one in this thread, other than you, has suggested that gaming didn't start till the Playstation. I don't know where you've pulled that from, but you can put it back.

I don't think they should be credited for the 3D era, nor do I think loss leading and hollywood sized budgets are things that are gonna help this industry. It made me blind with rage that I was punching and swinging at stale air.
Miyamoto once said (durring the golden era when Nintendo was on top) that he wished games could be seen as a more than just toys...Sony has be a critical part in making games into more than toys, but at the same time people who once made fun of the ol' days that I (and many other Nintendo nerds loved SO MUCH) are now suddenly "gamers" just 'cos it's popular. To me, these people aren't gamers...they're posers, but since I'm the N-tard I don't have a say anymore. I was into it WAY before it became cool to be into it. I digress, there's nothing I can do about it.

SolidSnakex said:You could've did that to all of his post. If anyone ever wonders why Nintendo fans are often the targets of jokes, point them to that post. That reminds me of how people will love a band when they're unpopular and the second they start making any money they become shit.

What's funny is...Sony, in a way, "revolutionized" gaming by making it more popular with casuals and "cool" people. Now Nintendo hopes to one-up that popularization with Revolution by causing a "revolution" in getting non-gamers into gaming. Just as I (an OG N-tard) calls the PlayStation generation of "gamers" posers...I think the PlayStation generation will revolt in a similar fashion to the newer "non-gamers" Nintendo brings in with NDS/Revolution. It's quite...odd!

Kolgar said:Stop being a fool, man. No company unseats an entrenched market leader just because said leader makes a few mistakes. Sony's success is certainly in part because it made the right moves at the right times.
It sounds to me like your bias is getting in the way of your objectivity, and if it's causing you to take punches at stale air, it might be a good idea for you to readjust your world view... or buy an air conditioner.
It's both. Nintendo failed to offer a large, cheap storage medium and reduced licensing costs, while Sony offered both of those. Nintendo made mistakes, Sony made good decisions.Kolgar said:Stop being a fool, man. No company unseats an entrenched market leader just because said leader makes a few mistakes. Kolgar said:Here's an idea. Why don't you just play the games and forget about the brand names?
Pedigree Chum said:I like how Dr Gakman ignores all the things Sony did, like launch powerful hardware at a good price and at the right time, strong 1st party games at launch and beyond, fantastic business model that was fair for 3rd parties (this helped many publishers defect from Nintendo), insanely brillant promotion for the FF series in NA, making a genre that was not sucessful in the west a HUGE market overnight, signing deals for Tomb Raider (this was big at the time). That's just with the PSX.
Yes, Sony only won cause Nintendo made some mistakes...keep telling yourself that.
DrGAKMAN said:Sony had the advantage 'cos they:
-in the beginning had crappy 1ST party, thus making 3RD party games for the system took the front seat, unlike the NES/SNES/N64/beyond
-launched before N64
-better advertising/marketting
-the Sony name was certainly more attractive to casuals than the Japanesy Nintendo
-Sony hollywoodized gaming (IMO, basterdized it)
-mainly 'cos of CD's:
--discs are higher capacity than carts
--cheaper to produce too
--lower licensing
--better 3RD party relations as a result
--made streaming FMV more viable, which in turn:
---made advertising/selling the system easier
---made Sony gaming in general seem more than N64 'cos it could not do it
---casuals took it more seriously 'cos it gave the impression that purty PlayStation movies were more impressive than real-time N64 gameplay
-having the most dominance, better support led to alot of great games, but just as much alot larger library that even all of N64's million sellers couldn't outshine in the end
DrGAKMAN said:No...it's more entertaining to be biased...ask Amir0x!

I love how ALL Nintendo fans are the same and all think the same according to you. You love to lump us into this "N-tard" category. You know...I can enjoy games on ANY system, I just prefer Nintendo systems. Nowhere do I say that Sony or even MS are stupid/shitty/whathaveyou, however, I do believe that some people give WAY too much credit to PlayStation. Likewise...some Nintendo fans (or what I like to call fanatics) give Nintendo too much credit as well.
I just hate that in order to get all the games I want I have to buy 3 seperate consoles...sorry guys, I'm poor, not gonna do it. You say that I should change MY point of view 'cos I'm some sort of blind Nintendo fanboy, when maybe ya'll should change YOUR point of view and realize that not all of us have that much expendable cash to spend on our hobbies.
