Kerbal Space Program : like model rocket building but better and [no longer] free

no even when you land you have to hit escape and end the mission.

it almost overheats but each stage finishes just before it explodes.

So as soon as he stops climbing I can escape and exit?
edit 8000km and still 1950 m/s.

This game needs a time lapse mode.

My second rocket broke the 100km barrier, then took me up to about 223 before it started coming back down.

I would kind of feel dirty going with the stupid rockets in this thread because they're so hideously unrealistic. Mine was just a simple, two stage liquid fuel rocket, one fuel tank per engine, three engines on the lower stage, one on the upper.

Ah, silly me, i was playing it all wrong, it worked out great ! Didnt know that you accelerate with shift etc, kinda skipped the tutorial.

Ah I have learned about the stabilizers now, even though I did the tutorials I forgot to turn them on :S

Much easier to get into space now, too easy in fact.

Now, who wants to make a jet fighter?

Are there any componenets other than the ones you start with? If so, how do you get them?

I was thinking it would be cool to try to make a reentry vehicle that slams into the ground at > 3 km/s.

^

holy shit dude, you have to post a pic of the rocket.

i've beaten space and now im trying to max out G's. still cant pass the 40G mark.

Takes almost 40 seconds now to lose 1m/s of speed.[/QUOTE]

Takes me 55 seconds. You'll overtake me any hour now. :/

I will, going to let it run for a while more.
I wish I had recorded my launch, it was epic.

9 boosters all at once, 3 at the bottom 6 at the top, straight as an arrow.

Too bad you have to hold F or the ship starts spinning.
Put it in a roll once it's in space and stable, it'll go on it's own forever.

This has some funny contraptions, just found it on their forum.

Or this ridiculous contraption, still outperformed by my simpler rocket:p

Watch at risk of stifling own creativity!

The report from the guy making the triple shuttle launcher slew me, so funny.

Heh i'm having fun making nothing but solid fuel rockets, since they have a 28 second burn life each it's much more of a challenge to reach space.

I give up waiting, will cancel the flight and upload a screenshot of the rocket and log.

Flight log : 141 G acceleration, not bad:p

Uploading video of the rocket atm, it's hard to take a screenshot as I don't know how to zoom in or out in the hangar.

What does your rocket design look like?

Haha, wow. I managed to send a rocket 390km out, and I landed just outside the space complex on the way back down.

My first real attempt to reach 100k km limit with thrust.
Still some stablility issues with my poorly designed liftoff engines but i probably manage to extend liquid fuel capacity with space phase engines in the future nonetheless.
Didnt bother with the the extra stuff yet.

You're going for 100 000 kilometers? Good luck!

This game is fucking awesome!

Running in two windows now. In the first I am at 10,000 km @ 2650 m/s. Think I'll just keep it running all day to see what happens lol.

In the other window I am sorta in orbit around the planet , trying to see what the night time side looks like.

Pf the extra parts in the link on the first page make things much easier.
Got to 11000 metres and 240 m/s before I had to fire my first liquid tank, and with the new set up I can take 5 tanks instead of 4.

3500 m/s at 400km now.
The physics are off though<,< same top stages of my rocket as with the old one only this one won't stabilise itself with the auto pilot thing, at all. (once everything else is jettisoned and it's identical)

I thought about checking the other side of the planet but not really sure how lol.

ok, my new best with 1000 km+. SAS really makes it easy, but it is useless if you want to do orbiting around the planet :)

They should include landing on moon and distant planets in full version. A lot of potential here.

What link? I can't seem to find anything for new parts.

Yeah, that would be a bit far though. I've had my session running for five hours now and I'm 25 500 KM into space. The moon is never closer than 362 570 KM. Now imagine going to Mars.

With time lapse option that would be no problem.

This game is so good! Check out the planned features people:

About Kerbal Space Program

Kerbal Space Program is a multi-genre game where the player can create his own space program.

In KSP, you must build a space-worthy craft, capable of flying it's crew out into space, without killing them.At your disposal is a collection of parts, which must be assembled to create a functional ship. Each part has it's own function and will affect the way a ship flies (or doesn't).So strap yourself in, and get ready to try some Rocket Science!

Main Features:

The Vehicle Assembly Building. allows players to build spacecraft out of any imaginable combination of parts.
Fully-fledged, Physics-based Flight Simulation ensures everything will fly (and crash) as it should.
Procedural Terrain delivers detailed terrain at a vast scale. The Kerbal Planet is 600km in radius!
Mod-enabled, allows players to create new content and modify the game.
Ship systems. Keep an eye out for engine temperatures and fuel levels, and try not to explode.
Build ships with multiple stages, and jettison parts away as they burn out.
Full control over the staging sequence allows for complex ships and advanced functionality.

Planned Features:

Take on Missions to attract interest in your Space Program. Or use the Mission Planner to create your own missions.
Manage your Space Program. Hire astronauts, train them, research and improve parts.
Fly out to Moons and other Planets
Build Space Stations, and surface bases on other worlds.
And a whole lot more!
KSP is still under development, so many things are not yet as they should be. We are working hard to be constantly improving the game however, and it will be regularly updated with bug fixes and new content, so make sure to check back for new versions. We are also always listening to feedback from the players, and we welcome ideas and suggestions.

Currently the game is being built as an open sandbox. There are no objectives yet. You're free to build anything you can think of, and fly it wherever you want, even into orbit.

The first versions are free to download and play, and will remain so forever. After the game reaches a certain state of development, it will be available for purchase at a discounted price, which will gradually increase up to it's final retail price as the game nears completion. So by ordering early, you get the game for a lot less, and you'll get all future updates for free.

Have Fun!

It's using the same development/business model Minecraft and Frozen Synapse use. How awesome! I can't wait to pre-order this sucker and support the game's development... it's too promising a game to disappear (doesn't look like it will, though... 50,000 downloads in only 13 days).

By the way, FlyinJ, any way you could make note of the game's planned feature-set in the OP and title? It will actually be a pretty robust simulation/sandbox game.

At 30 minutes I am at 5660 km at the speed of 3912 m/s and decelerating at around 1 m/s every 20 seconds.
For some unintelligible reason my parachute is out and I am a few degrees off the perfect balance but it doesn't matter.
I'll leave it running for a bit.

I just realized I've been building rockets the hard way. I didn't notice that symmetry button on the top left.

Doh.

I believe I've officially left Earth's gravitational pull completely at around 38 500 KM away. I've been at 1196.6 m/s for several minutes.

I hope you saved some fuel for the return trip.
There won't be a return trip.

armageddon_ver1.jpg

(This is nothing like the plot of Armageddon)

EDIT: But seriously, my speed is still the same. Earth's gravity drops out around 39500 KM. Cool. There was also a loud crackling sound from the game at that point.

The extras have some bugs or glitches on them i think? With a bit more of force attached to the large tanks the tanks will get ripped apart/ the booster below gets left behind at lift off lol.

Got up to around 770km without the extras, and so far ain't beating that with the extras, they are generally too heavy and get ripped apart most of the time, but I managed to make some cool missile jet fighters out of the longer solid fuel booster. :D
