Kerbal Space Program : like model rocket building but better and [no longer] free

Everyone in here needs to get the MechJeb add-on. It makes flying and orbiting so much easier. It's just as fun, too. Some may find it too easy but I enjoy it. Makes me feel like someone sitting in the NASA mission control.

The mod also features probe like command modules. No more dead kerbals!

The main advantage for me was that mechjeb thought me the right trajectories and altitudes. I haven't used it since reinstalling the game. But I might again.

Removing dead kerbals and launch accidents is like removing the chocolate from a chocolate cake. It works for some but it's kinda missing the point and getting rid of the flavour. Mechjeb has its uses (see Scott Manley's august youtube vids where he used it to have a ship carry autonomous probes) but I don't use it for anything I can't do well myself.

I still have launch accidents. Probably doesn't help I'm trying to figure out the plug-in with a trial and error approach. I haven't read or watched much about it.

Yeah, it's a conglomeration of several previous plugins so it's tricky to use despite the online manual. First time I tasked it with a landing it panicked and sent my ship at full speed against the moon surface. Once you learn to use it it's pretty good though.

I've landed on the Mun! Although, I've stranded 5 kerbals on the surface. I lost another kerbal to an overzealous trigger finger on his rocket pack on the Mun...

How'd I get there? I used my updated NASA Space Launch System craft. I've downloaded an awesome series of mods which have great decouplers which hide rocket engines. I just need to fix the landing and escape stages of it and I'll be happy.

Version 0.17 is out! Here's the change list. They don't release update frequently but I love that, when they do, it's always a ton of new stuff!

Several new Planets and Moons, for a total of 14 Celestial Bodies.
Multiple game saves support.
Tutorials and Scenarios.
Several new Parts, including a NERVA Engine.
Internal Cockpit Views on several cockpits.
Center of mass, thrust, lift and drag visual cues on the construction scenes.
Physical Timewarp Modes: An alternate time-warp mode where you can accelerate time to 2x, 3x and 4x without putting the sim on rails.
Much improved visuals in space.

Thanks for the heads-up. Nice update list too. Twelve more Celestial Bodies, new parts and scenarios sound especially interesting. I've had so much bang for my buck ever since I bought the game last year.

Woah, huge update!

It looks like they fixed a bunch of fuel flow bugs - hopefully fixing the problem I was having constructing landers...

Technically you're supposed to be able to let the patcher just do its thing. However mine found a checksum error in the readme file and refused to patch so I had to redownload the whole thing again. It was all worth it though, the planets are marvelous.

How can nobody be talking in here? One of the biggest versions was released last night finally adding docking and a million other things.

I'm not talking because I'm playing. My first space station:

I love what the new changes bring to the table: my Duna lander ran out of fuel after taking off and getting into orbit but had a docking port, so I solved it by sending a second ship with a docking port and after a mostly effortless rendezvous the lander had a nifty new nuclear stage to bring it back home.

Supposedly the 0.18.1 update is out, but the patcher still isn't working for me either, so I'm still stuck on 0.17.1. The update looks awesome, I can't wait to build space stations like that Chev!

Awesome station.

I'm still struggling to get anything into a solid orbit lol

Considering getting Mechjeb when its updated for .18

Atlus V2-4 probe currently monitoring temperatures and barometric pressure over Eastern Asia. (I'm actually spying on Russian missile sites, te-he.)

Haha holy shit that looks crazy.

TO MUN AND BEYOND...or To Mun then run out of fuel and end up slignshotting back to Kerbin.

I've toyed with the demo of this a few times, but can never seem to even get out of the atmosphere.

Are there any good tutorials out there, or a recommendation for mods/instructions?

Check out Scott Manley on Youtube.

Here was my space station pre-ver. 0.18

Now I have to try to rebuild it.

I would stay away from mods for the time being, you need to get the basics down before venturing into that territory.

As for video suggestions- well youtube is filled with good videos.

Here's a good beginners guide-

And I agree with the Scoot Manley videos, very well done-

This game got so much better with the 0.18.1 release.

I put a probe with some docking ports and fuel into a 150km circular orbit and docked a ship with it. I then took up another ship, and did an Apollo style stack separation, rotated 180 degrees and docked with the Kerbal crew container so that it was attached to the top of my capsule. I then did a rendezvous with the station and docked the new crew cabin to the station.

Awesome, right? Well, then I started transferring Kerbals from the capsule into the crew cabin. The first Kerbal (Bill) made it fine, and so, all cocky, I started to transfer Bob. Well, long story short, he ended up pretty far from the station, so what to do? I undocked one of my ships and used the new docking controls to go get him!

Everything went great, and nobody died. I'm not sure that's very Kerbal, but it is incredibly awesome when things go right.

Thanks all.

I had another go last night, actually managed to get "into" space, though after I sped up the simulation, I actually ended up coming back to the Earth anyway! It's the first time that my little Kerbals have survived :)

Had some difficulty with the ordering of stages. For some reason my final stage was popping with the launch stage and I couldn't figure it out, so started again, but I'll watch that beginners video above too, get a better feel for it.

I haven't purchased yet, still demo'ing, but I think I'll bite soon, once I get confortable with the basics. Game is awesome.

EDIT: Oh, had a funny build going too. The whole thing would get off the ground, but then just "strafe" sideways unable to go any higher; ended up over the water before deploying the parachute.

Did the latest couple updates make it harder to get the three man pod into space. I remember it being alot easier seem like I need to build much larger rockets than before.
Could just be I suck not playing in a long time.

The three kerbal pod is much larger than the old pod which is effectively the size of the new one kerbal pod. So yeah, lifting it is a bit harder.

I hope this game gets exposure for everyone that would be interested in this kind of game. The major modeler is fucking 18 and I think started off just modding the game. Love it
