Kickstarter will launch in Japan on September 13th

Kickstarter has announced it will open its crowdfunding platform in a key Asian market next month.

The leading crowdfunding platform will go live in Japan on September 13th, The Verge reports. Confirmation of a Japanese version was given earlier this year, but now a date has been set.

The launch will mean Japanese developer can create their own projects and crowdfunding campaigns using local bank accounts and forms of identification. Previously, studios would have to go through a partnership with a firm based in the United States or another market where Kickstarter is open to project submissions.

Cool beans, I hope this brings new projects. Will they still appear on kickstarter.com (as many international projects do) or will I have to make a new account over at, say, kickstarter.jp?

Normally I don't want big corps using kickstarter, but if it's the only way we get Mega Man Legends, Breath of Fire, Power Stone, Suikoden, Shining Force, Shadow Hearts, Phantasy Star, Panzer Dragoon, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Break, etc. then go for it!

Same. Jrpgs aren't doing so bad these days, but I'd like to see continuations of abandoned classics that aren't on mobile please not mobile sob

It'll be interesting to see how many established "big" (non-indie? whatever the better term is) companies use this. Getting stuck in their ways/not liking change is a big problem with people calling the shots in Japanese companies, so I've heard, and that probably extends to ways of getting funding.

I'm expecting so many waifu games

I'm always kinda surprised but not really when some dry-looking waifu game hits the funding goal within like 17 hours of launch.

I wonder how this will end up. Some of the KS-esque Japanese clones have done well for raising funds that have made games and movies. Hope to see some devs hop on if they were reluctant before!

It'd be cancelled before it gets funded

Capcom forever trollin'

But seriously, this time they could one up Inafune and kickstart a proper Megaman game that plays well?

I would be so-in if Sega of Japan wanted to kickstart an upcoming game. Skies of Arcadia II? sure. A proper sequel to Phantasy Star IV? OK. Use Kickstarter to revive an old franchise, Sega!

Phantasy Star, Skies of Arcadia

The current issue of the german print magazine MAN!AC has a very interesting interview with Reiko Kodama, R&D Producer at Sega. They mainly talk abou the past times and how she became a game designer for Sega, but there are two questions I'll try to translate.

She says about Phantasy Star:

MAN!AC: The "Phantasy Star"-Saga ends with the fourth title, "Phantasy Star Online" opens its own strand. Have you ever thought about going back to the roots with new games?
Kodama: Indeed I did. Right after Phantasy Star 4 the developers and I thought about a fifth chapter. To be honest we still talk about it regulary even today. I love the characters and the worlds - I would really be pleased about such a project.

And about Skies of Arcadia 2:

MAN!AC: There were rumors about a sequel (to Skies of Arcadia) or a "Gaiden" episode. Can you tell us something about that?

We had plans, but the other team members are currently working on other projects such as "Sakura Taisen" - this means SoA2 is currently on hold. Anyway I would be very glad about a new episode with the sky pirates.

Is Japan culturally calibrated to support something like Kickstarter?

I wonder what the breakdown was between western/Japanese backers for Mighty No 9.

I hope you like Visual Novels.

Mega Man Legends? You guys keep underestimating how much game development costs.

Can everyone support projects on kickstarter japan or only japanese?
It's not explicitly stated in the article.

Hopefully their Shipping around the world tier isn't super high on whatever they will be trying to kickstart 😢
