Killed off characters who could've had more substance

pqPOkSa.jpg

Reks, FF12.

He had a noble cause and was someone I could morally identify with, far more than any other character in the entire game. They killed him off for motivation, when the characters themselves didn't even care anymore 2 years later.

Reks had a background, a motivation, and a promising adventure ahead of him. But we were robbed. We were robbed of a potentially amazing main character, and we got trash instead.

Eddy Raja from Uncharted

Ricardo Irving from Resident Evil 5

Both went to waste IMO

Danganronpa 2
Ibuki_______

I do not understand what people see in this character.
She was the only legitimately good person on that island. At least to me, discounting Fatbyak.

Also, I know the game memoire makes it iffy, but even then, wasn't as bad as any of them.

Killing off
Strangelove
in MGSV was completely unnecessary. Much more than
Chico's treatment
- while it could have been built up to more than just a one-off line in TPP, the context of Ground Zeroes makes it a reasonable enough choice.

Vaas from Far Cry 3, what made it worse is that they followed him up with a fairly generic villain.

I actually liked Hoyt.

"What a job, poker. Ask anyone on the street and they'll call it a game of chance. Or talk to Sam here, and he'll say it's about bluffing, won't you, Sam? But it's not, is it? It's about keeping you playing until the house collects!"

*starts murdering people*

Eddy Raja from Uncharted... He could of been used as a hilarious gag on every game; just a small appearance of him witnessing Drake's shinanigans and it ruining his vacation or something.

I always felt we didn't get enough information on Luis in Resident Evil 4. He's such a bizarre character in comparison to the plot and scenery and he's mostly relegated to an exposition machine and comic relief. He never really gets his moment, either, he dies so suddenly. You don't even know it's coming. The cutscene could appear anywhere in the game because it's so self-contained. He just walks into the room and is killed. It's such a bummer to me.
You beautiful human being. I ctrl + f = "Luis" and you're the only person who had the good sense to mention him.

Luis' untimely demise in RE4 is one of the few blemishes on an otherwise magnificent game (my favorite of all time). He was a weird Johnny Depp lookalike you couldn't help but love. The best part is how Leon never pronounces his name right. (Intentional meta-commentary on American ignorance of other cultures?)

I wish they had at least immortalized him in Mercenaries, where he's inexplicably missing.

Jihl Nabaat, FFXIII. One of the many, many missteps in that game.

Scolar Visari in Killzone 2. Very anticlimactic. I think I can understand why and how it might be a good narrative turn, but the execution was very poor. Killzone actually has a bad habit of doing this to its more interesting characters.

Uh, I guess Roxas and Namine in Kingdom Hearts II? I felt like Roxas in particular should've had more screen time. Although he did eventually get the spotlight in 358/2 days, it seems like the way in which his arc was resolved was kind of a letdown.

Liquid Snake in MGS is the biggest one, though. Although he did manage to work his way into the sequels in a variety of really fantastical ways, I think it would've made a lot more sense and carried more weight if the character himself had somehow survived to fight another day.

I'll never understand what people see in this character. He was one dimensional, didn't have anything of interest added to his character in his later appearances (V being the only notable one but he was basically the same one note character there) and he already survived several situations where it made no sense for him to live through.

From the statements I've read from Kojima it seems like the only reason he continued to be a part of the series is because he was popular, although he didn't directly state that.

A bunch of my Crusader Kings 2 characters.

Getting out manoeuvred and killed when unexpected is part of the fun with that game, though.

Getting smothered/assassinated in bed as a 3 year old toddler tends to give motivation to have relatives try to get revenge in a blood feud, when control switches to the next in line.

Rekt.

9 in 999. He seems like he already knows the nonary game and can provide some answers, then he dies.
I'm just at the part where he dies, though, so who knows what happens next.

Not killed in the story per se, but killed by their creator. Every Character here:

A lot of amazing movelists that deserve to live on in fighting games. I'm boycotting Sega for pulling the plug on the Virtua Fighter series.

I rarely hear this, but I 100% agree. I was really disappointed he wasn't the protagonist for the entire game.

A lot of the opening act deaths are there for a reason. You might want more Patrick Stewart in Oblivion but him living outside the opening likely means he doesn't get cast in the role in the first place.

Sometimes dead is better, and I disagree with nearly all of the opening act deaths posted in the thread. They're needed to give their starts some oomph.

MGSV - Skull Face
latest

Such a lust for more character substance

Okay, I mean he does get a lot more substantial post-endgame via the tapes but that's also a big problem. It's not exactly worth that much anymore if you tell me more horrible shit he did after whacking him with a double barrel. And on-screen, he pretty much just figuratively twirls his mustache through monologues and not much else.

Rachel Foley from Resident Evil Revelations (sorry on mobile, no pics)

But then again Gina Foley died in Revelations 2 so maybe it's becoming a running gag. Looking forward to the next Foley kicking-the-bucket in Rev3.

Uncharted 3

Marlowe and Talbot were so goddamn 2-dimensional. Seriously, the game concerns a government organization that seemingly has endless money, goons, and influence, and you don't want to say anything about them? Or even give motivation to why Marlowe wanted the mind-control fungus aside from power? What the hell was Talbot's relationship with Marlowe? Was Talbot the Nate for Marlowe's Sully? There was so much potential to explore in the ramifications for such an organization or a parallel between Nate & Sully and Marlowe & Talbot.

And instead the game chooses to go with "Hey, she kinda looks evil and power-hungry Helen Mirren! Good enough for the story!"

Cole McGeneric
from inFamous. Dude was basically generic as fuck but his backstory was wicked cool and it would have been nice to see him alive in a game like Second Son, even just as an NPC, boss, or someone with an active reputation beyond being
humanity's dead savior
. I wanted to see him get a little older, a little more pragmatic... a little more like Kessler, except without all the survivor's guilt

Didact from Halo 4? Ancient, powerful enemy... dealt with through an unfulfilling QTE after merely interacting with the Master Chief.

Nah,
he came back in a book, and THEN was killed via disintegration.

That makes it worse. Here's the highest ranking warrior of the Forerunner empire, the strongest and most advanced species to roam the galaxy
not counting the Precursors since 343i does nothing but ignore them
. Press these buttons and you'll defeat him, don't worry about it he'll return he isn't actually death we'll just kill him off in a comic.

The Rookie. Not that he had to say anything, but he could have done a lot more.

I really enjoyed that book, but damn. Was kinda bummed about that. Killing off a player character in a book is kind of... Odd.

The thing is, technically he's still not technically dead. At least, officially. He was composed (which doesn't make any fucking sense, since Halo 4 says flat-out that's impossible), which means technically he could be brought back, and Chief even says he believes the Didact is contained, not dead. So they just "brought him back" only to send him back to the "he could be dead or alive" limbo Halo 4 left him in. (which is basically every Halo: Escalation plotline in a nutshell - more or less pointless arcs that end in a reversion to the status quo. Absolutely worthless comic)

I think he might get brought back in Halo 6 though. The core idea of Halo 5 (
Cortana gone amuck and trying to take over the galaxy
) pre-dates Halo 4, so I would hope 343i actually had long term plans for the characters and arcs the introduced in Halo 4. It's possible the Didact was always intended to come up later in the current story arc, but I worry he was brought in for the sole purpose of achieving Halo 4's ending... Especially since right now nothing in Halo 4 except for the final cutscenes is relevant to Halo 5.

Am I on crazy pills or has no one said Jet stream Sam yet? Dude was so cool he made Raiden look like a jobber in "Raiden's sweet ass Ninja Cyborg Bad Ass Revengeance The Game." I mean just look at this guy.

Gimme a prequel that focuses on Sam Platinum. Just fuckin do it.

Jacky, Akira, Pai, and Sarah are in DOA5. Plus, pulling the plug implies there was a VF6 in the works and they just cancelled it. AFAIK, that never happened.

I'm sure we'll get a VF6 before the gen is over.

honestly i was so sure they were gona bring him back for a sequel that i honestly didnt consider him dead. lol.

sequel huh.....
i think if just made myself sad.

Andrew Oikonny in Star Fox Assault could be the best Andrew in the series and the character who would carry the entire plot... if he wasn't killed in the FIRST MISSION OF THE GAME.

Yeah ya made me a bit sad too brother, but I forgive ya. Honestly maybe we should be ok with that fact. I mean considering the quality of Platinum's output as of late I'm not really sure they could make a sequel that was up to par with the quality of Revengeance. Hate to be a naysayer but I can't say Scalebound is lookin too hot :/

In the novel Halo: New Blood.

He gets executed by an Insurrectionist during a mission. This leads to Dutch retiring, Mickey defecting, and eventually the dissolution of Alpha-Nine, which is why Buck is part of Fireteam Osiris now.
The fuck?
These dudes basically fucked up at least a medium sized convenant army yet, the Rookie nearly single handedly, and he gets wrecked by some rebels??
Wow

Nier Automata seems to be retaining a lot of staff from MGR and it doesn't look completely awful, but I agree that it's overwhelmingly likely that we'd probably regret ever wanting MGR2 if it actually somehow happened.

Danganronpa: almost every character

No seriously, almost every character. That character you like and want to know more about? They're dead.

I just finished Danganronpa 1 and I agree with this. Unfortunately the characters that survived, most of them were my least favorite
except Hina. My favorite characters were Chihiro, Hifumi, Sakura, and Mondo and they got offed rather quickly
:P

Desmond Miles from Assassins Creed series

L5r25PK.png

All that build up during 5 console games (I, II, Brotherhood, Revelations and III) and it all seemed to indicate that at some point MAYBE there was going to be a game in which he would use the skills learned from his 3 ancestors along with their experiences to be an Assassin in modern times but NOPE! we need to rush to finish this game and also have a wham ending so bye Desmond!

Maybe I am pressed because I kind of liked his character, even more after the events of AC: Brotherhood and the insight of his past that was explored in the Black Room sections on AC: Revelations.

Meh.
