Today, 20th March 2009, Tripwire is proud to announce its next title – Killing Floor – coming soon to Steam.

Roswell, GA, March 20th 2009 – Tripwire Interactive is proud to announce Killing Floor, due for release over Steam in the near future. Killing Floor is a first-person co-op survival horror, set in and around London after a mad scientist’s “specimens” have broken loose and gone on the rampage.

The game features:

•Co-op game mode for up to six players obliterating multiple waves of specimens
•Solo game mode for offline play
•Watch those crucial and violent creature deaths in slomo “ZEDtime”, even in multiplayer
•9 different monster types trying to eat your face off, armed with everything from teeth and claws, through to chainsaws, chainguns and rocket-launchers
•12+ weapons for the players to chose from, ranging from knives and fire-axes up to pump shotguns, rifles and a flamethrower
•Add in a welder, medical tools and body armor to help the players survive
•Persistent Perks system, allowing players to convert their in-game achievements into permanent improvements to their character’s skills and abilities
•Players choose which Perks to play with, so they can best balance out a co-op team to survive the horrors
•Open, non-linear play areas: choose when and where to fight – or run; weld doors closed to try and direct the monster horde
•Full support for Steamworks features, including Steam Achievements and Friends
•Fully-configurable, allowing players to change things as simple as the difficulty level or number of creature waves, or go so far as to set up their own favorite waves of monsters
•Includes SDK for the creation of new levels and mods

For more information over the coming weeks, see the Killing Floor website and forums: www.killingfloorthegame.com.
Sounds sweet :D definitely more my style of game than Red Orchestra, for sure.

So...

Hm.

Killing Floor is/was a UT2004 mod, sort of like Left4Dead, I guess. It's been around for a while. I guess this is going to be its first retail release?

You are dropped in a huge, open map and you're given setup time to explore the environment (and if you can find one, buy items from a merchant). You can use a welding gun to weld doors shut, too (the longer you weld a door, the stronger it is).

Then zombies start pouring in. Slow ones, at first, I think? The longer you hold out, you start seeing more and more powerful zombies until you eventually die or the wave is over.

It's been so long since I played it. It was fun, I guess, but hard as hell.

VE3D has more information and some screens - http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/45623/Tripwire-Interactive-Announces-Killing-Floor

Alex Quick, the mod's lead developer, approached Tripwire about porting Killing Floor over to Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, the winner of Epic Games' original Make Something Unreal competition, and one of the most successful independently developed titles to be released through Steam. Tripwire countered, offering instead to purchase Killing Floor, and to help a group of the original developers release it as a highly polished, upgraded retail product.

Killing Floor will be released through Steam in the not too distant future, at a low, recession-friendly price point.

It's using the UE2.5 engine, still looks pretty good. At least we won't have to worry about performance :lol

I think Red Orchestra is a really great game, and this sounds like it'll be fun. If it's cheap like they say it will be, I'll almost definately pick this one up.

Off topic. Did Tripwire ever make any announcements on the game based on the UE3 engine they won in the "Make Something Unreal" contest a few years back?

anyone else having problems buying stuff from steam now? I just saw the pre-order for this when I booted up steam earlier and thought I'd pick it up immediatly on there since it seems unlikely it'll show up on other downloadbuys.. but it wouldn't take, I tried paypal aswell after the regular visa option failed and it didn't even progress past the first of the checkout pages, so it's not something wrong on my end. anyone?

I used an avatar pic on here of a guy from this game for a while actually (great sentence). good times.

First I have heard of this, it sounds good and UE2.5 will run on an oldish pc very easily.

Tempted to preorder, it's £11.24 in sterling.

I guess no one is interested in this? :lol

I remember playing the mod version way back in the day. I'll probably be playing this as well. How many people are gonna be playing this though?

Preordered.
The original mod was pretty rough around the edges, but crazy fun when playing with friends. From the movie it looks like all the classic maps are back, which is great, but I really hope they add some new ones. The original also allowed some totally insane number of zombie-waves by manually editing the config-files, and I really hope that feature remains...

holy shit $15? Had no idea it would be that cheap. I figured $25 minimum or so.

Ordered!

Also, can a mod please be kind and fix my shitty thread title? Something like:

"Official Killing Floor thread of 6-player zombie killing co-op for $15 (Red Orchestra devs)"

Looks really awesome, I'll think about it. I still need to figure out Red Orchestra, though :lol Picked it up when it was the weekend deal a few months ago and I haven't really dug into it.

Wow I never even heard about this until just now when I noticed it on the steam homepage. Looks amazing and seems to have an actual element of horror that L4D kind of lacked.

Bought. Never played the original mod but it sounds awesome.

yeah, they have the wave configs there still, pretty sure. I never played the original mod though. :(

I'm a huge fan of Red Orchestra and I've played it at least once a month since the first betas way back in the day. I kind of just want to buy it to support Tripwire because of how much I loved Red Orchestra.

I'm looking forward to this coming out, just pre-ordered it. I love co-op and I love zombies, so I should love this. Left 4 Dead is still a blast but it's always nice to have a change of pace. I pre-ordered Plants vs Zombies too! :D

Well, went ahead and finally pre-orderred it.

I won't be around when it comes out though, oh well.

Loving all this Tripwire shit lately. My favorite mod-team is turning into my favorite developer. Nice.

from what i've gathered tripwire is more of the publisher in this case.
nah, they're definitely developing. the original mod team (still working on it) is only four people. quite a few interviews linked from the killingfloor site.

ordered this along with Defense Grid, which was $5. both games for the price of one of them at launch? yes please.

i really like the emphasis on horror that the trailer shows. Left 4 Dead is amazing and all, but it's more of a fast-paced action game, much like Resident Evil 4. Killing Floor looks a lot closer to the original Resident Evil games in style, complete with actual survival elements like ammo scarcity.

The art style looks somewhat generic to me and the trailer isn't really doing much for me, but just the fact that it has 6 player co-op is making it tempting. The perk system sounds like it might be interesting too.

Here's some info I found from the forums:

- There will only be 5 maps, but each of them lasts about 45 minutes and they are already creating more maps.

- There are 6 different perks and leveling them all to max level should take about 600 hours.

- On the normal setting there will be 32 enemies on screen at once but if you play the sandbox mode, you can increase that amount to 800.

I've pre-ordered; game looks awesome and very creepy! My Steam name is INDIGO_CYCLOPS if anyone wants to add me so we can play. Not too much longer!

The video sold me. L4D was disappointing, this seems to be much closer to what I wanted.

I'm actually in agreement with you there...
