Killzone Mercenary | Single Player Campaign Gameplay | Gamescom 2013

I was playing the beta last night and I've just got a VIta. Graphically very nice indeed. Gameplay wise I was struggling with the analogue sticks, they aren't great and I don't feel too in control with them. It'll take a bit of getting used to. Hopefully I'll enjoy the single player more.

The sticks being shorter do take a bit of time to adjust to but you eventually will. Also... the default sensitivity of the beta is awful, mess around with it.

Might be on easy. Killzone games have good A.I

Yeah... judging AI in early builds is never fair. They tend to put the game on easy or god mode so the people playing it for 2 minutes at a time don't feel frustrated during it.

That's not to say the game won't have AI problems - who knows. Im just saying we can't judge it on a demo build for a game show.

I think this is UK only though: http://www.game.co.uk/en/playstation-vita-3g-with-killzone-mercenary-209599

Vita 3G + 8GB + KZ:M

ÂŁ170 is an absolute bargain for a 3G unit and the card plus KZ.

Sony needs to get this bundle over here in the states ASAP. The footage in the OP looks incredible. I can only imagine how many newborns were sacrificed to get this game looking as good as it does.

Every Killzone fan with a little expendable income should buy a Vita for this game.

The A.I in Killzone games really shine when on higher difficulties because they deal more damage which requires you to get into cover and that gives the A.I some room to move and start doing some of the awesome things are capable of doing. Hopefully it is the same here.

2013 really feels like a relaunch of the whole Killzone series. Both this and Shadow Fall seem to have taken a lot of feedback from fans.

Don't get me wrong. This game looks very good. Is finally the FPS that Vita deserves. But I don't get how can you people claim that this is on par With the PS3s Killzones.

It's not, you can see that when you look closely. But it's not far away from PS3 quality either.

Well, I would say is considerably away from Ps3 quality. But it still looks very good. The best looking handheld game to date, but still a handheld game.

This is native res plus it has AA? What the hell are other developers doing that they have to resort to sub-native resolutions? After this game there are no excuses for it.

Trying to emulate console visual instead of playing to the Mobile sock strengths. If you look closer, this game has considerably lower geometry than the Ps3 games, specially on the characters. No much shadowing going on or dynamic lighting going on either. Instead, it sports a very good texture and light maps work (PVR architecture is a monster at texturing) and avoids low fidelity effects all together. For example in AssCreed:L, the self shading on the characters models looks horrible. This game instead this games avoids such a pronounced effect altogether for a softer approach, which looks better despite having lesser shading effects on the character models.

Well, it looks better than a number of Ps3 shooters. For example Resistance.
But it doesn't quite reach KZ2 or even KZ3 levels.

I'm saddened at the thought that there probably won't be portable GoW, another Uncharted, a TLoU or another fuckawesome "console" game on the go with similiar tech.

I will get this, maybe my brother as well.

I'm not a huge fan of killzone games or FPS games in general, but I'm extremely tempted to buy this game just so I can experience all the insane graphic moments in the campaign.

The 8 TMUs @ 200 MHz with no loss to overdraw is way more than enough to drive complex visuals at native 960x544, while the on-die buffers utilized with the tile rendering algorithm make anti-aliasing very affordable.

Game engines that don't achieve native resolution with AA on Vita simply have questionable priorities and are possibly trying to shoehorn the best practices from another system onto Vita's architecture.

Cambridge Studio are super talented. Maybe this will convince Sony to let them make more games this gen.

Weirdly enough their games pre becoming A guerrilla support studio left a lot wanting in the game design department, though it seems like slimming down the studio and the new integrated focus has really helped them while not affecting their technical expertise.

I wouldn't be surprised if after this and the quality of Little Big Planet PSP that we see Sony approving a new IP on Vita or even a full scale PS4 project for them at some point.

Yep, one of the few times a game has made me say " wow" when I first played it, graphically speaking.

It really does look stunning on the VITA and the best part, the FPS is actually stable ( well, a lot more than you expect)

As a game it really is fun, reminds me of KZ2 which is still one of the best FPS this gen for me ( only BFBC1 beats it slightly)

Geometry is one thing, but unlike Resistance and COD on Vita, Killzone looks to be using bump and normal mapping. You are right about self shading and fully dynamic lighting, it's overrated, especially on such a small screen.

Dynamic lighting is present in this game, but only in certain scenes where the player will actually notice it, sort of like how lighting is handled in Uncharted Golden Abyss. Guerrilla Cambridge have done a great job balancing visual fidelity, draw distance, and frame rate performance, based on what I've seen so far.

I expect Sony Bend to deliver even higher fidelity visuals than Killzone, given their track record of pushing portable hardware to its limit.

Also note how the blood splatters on the walls :o

I absolutely loved the MP BETA so this is Day 1 for me. Every VITA owner needs to buy this game to support the developer.

Damn. Opened up a whole bunch of threads in tabs, had to do a double take for a second to realize I was in a mercenaries thread. So damned good.

Off to play some more of the beta!

That is incredible...wish more devs would embrace the Vita, its such an amazing handheld. I feel like throwing up looking at the 3DS games in terms of graphics. Such a shame the superior hardware is being ignored.

It will get there. It is gaining momentum. Slowly, but surely.

I don't think you realize just how good this game looks until you have it running on the Vita. The native res + AA is absolutely incredible. I don't know how they did it.

I don't either, it looks quite a bit cleaner than most PS3 games as a result. I was absolutely floored by the MP beta.

I'm considering buying this at launch. Having fun with the beta (although I still don't like the sticks at all), and single player looks solid. I can't believe how good (graphically speaking) this game looks. It's pretty damn close to its PS3 counterparts.
