Killzone: Shadow Fall launch trailer & tech trailer

Welp that was a bit underwhelming, they should just give masks to all minor NPCs.

edit: hahaha this thread, it's like 2008 all over again.

My favourite part of 2008 was when people remade Killzone 2 debut trailer assets and propped them into CryEngine 2 via a Crysis mod to prove some kind of point.

Hey what's going on here?

Crytek can't compete with GG in the console space, their crysis gamed looked mediocre compared to KZ2/3.

And now with Shadow Fall, even their pc version is being dethroned.

Radec gonna Radec.

and still Crytek cant catch up to the water simulation of naughty dog, running on a 8 year old hardware....hmmm, ohh, i also played crysis 3, this past week, on a 770 4GB sli, nothing mind blowing tbh

One word: Geomcache. Film effects 10% of the original size now possible with their pipeline. Compare the water in Crysis 3 even on ultra settings, it's not even get close.

Ryse has the best water in any videogame ever made, be it console or pc. This is not me saying this, it comes from an industry expert.

I wasn't a fan of Killzone 2 or 3, but Shadowfall looks to fix so many of the problems I had with those games. I think GG might have taken that next step, I hope Shadowfall turns out as good as it looks.

Wouldn't it be kind of bad if the best-looking pure next-gen game couldn't beat the PC version of a PS360 game?

Erm...no. That water is not especially well realised imo. Looks gloopy and too polygonal. BF4 has much better water imo. And Crysis and AC IV from what I can remember.

Laa-Yosh is not some industry expect like your making him out to be .
If i remember he does vfx work for movies like a few others here on neogaf .

It might be preference then because that water is way more impressive *tech wise* The small waves in particular are nicely done.

Such nonsense. The Crysis games failed in performance in consoles simply because Crytek tried to do too much. Fully realtime HDR lighting and shadows come at a cost.

Actually, of that whole intro it was the water that looked the least impressive. Specially the splashes.

It took away resolution and framerate that ended up making the game looking worst.

Does the "fully realtime HDR lighting and shadows" made their games look beautiful in consoles? No.

Is it worth it? No.

Crytek cant handle last gen.

Then why does it look so weird?

That gif is an ambitious shot, I'll give them that. But I don't think it works.

Is Uncanny ocean a thing? Because uncanny ocean.

I think I prefer the water in GTA5 and other games - at least if you're actually going to dunk me in it. That Ryse water looks like its great for backgrounds.

Thank you thank you thank you for uploading a quick Engine Tech video, GG! Every single dev that can put their money where their mouth is should do one of these cause I love them. The more in depth ones are even better.

Game looks freaking sick as expected. Well done, GG.

My stance on the tech debate. Shadow Fall isn't doing things in as quite as high a quality as maxed out Metro or Crytek but the fact that it's a launch game on the equivalent of mid range PC specs and it compares favorably to those games speaks volumes to GG's talent.

I think it's because the water has lod, i saw the transition in a recent trailer. Look what happens when it gets even closer than the first gif i posted.

Edit: Sorry for going ot guys. I just wanted to respond to the other dude.

Shinobi my man, you are everywhere. Every time I see that Newman in the OP I know I've got something good to read / watch / think about.

*High five*

This is much better water imo.

EDIT: Whoever is responsible for these Ryse GIF's is not very good at making them. For some reason the Ryse GIF's above all others seem to chug my laptop more than any others. Maybe excessively large file sizes?

I'm not supposed to be hyped about FPS games. I'm terrible at the genre, I have an awful time online, my K/D ratio is usually something like negative 5.

This game though, this game.. Damnit Guerrilla you've got me as pumped as I was for KZ2 all those years ago. Fix this shit GG.

I've already got it preordered and got the notification about 3 hours ago that it shipped.

I'm going to need some friends with a whole bunch of patience to play online with. I want to have fun with this game, it looks so damn purty.

Jesus, that is a damn high quality mesh.

I'd also like to say how disappointing it is to come in a killzone thread and not be assaulted by glorious killzone gif's.

I'm not allowing myself to watch tailers but I've decided gif's are ok.

BF4 water sucks, its static when explosions and gunfire go off, only moves when characters walk through and moves like jelly

Yeah, I guess Shadow of the Colossus is garbage as well. Team ICO sucks.

It must depend on your preference then because the water in Ryse is much more textured/detailed, look at it closely, where bf4's looks very clear jello-ish.

I'm a tech guy, but honestly, both Ryse and BF4's water looks amazing. Shadow Fall does indeed look a great bit better than both the aforementioned on consoles.

Many weeks ago i mentioned that Killzone on PS4 was the most graphically impressive game on all platforms including PC. Some got a little huffy puffy about my blatant statement (<< their words!) of mine..mostly from the PC fanboys but keep in mind...i am no fanboy of any kind as i am a passionate gamer that lusts for eye candy and fun gameplay!. A few of these PC guys that tend to bombard next gen console threads stated that in no way is Killzone on PS4 the most impressive game graphically over the best that can be had on PC current....well i beg to differ. Just to make myself clear...I currently have a custom PC i built last summer which sports a nice 3770k@4.6ghz - 7970 VaporX@1200 Mhz Core/1600 Mhz memory - 16GB DDR3 Ram,etc,etc....so yeah i been there done that on PC and i know what PC games can deliver. Crysis 3 on PC is a beauty to behold....the new released Battlefield 4 on PC is also a dandy to say the least! But make no mistake about it...my statement i made some weeks ago (^ above ^) in a different killzone PS4 thread still stands true in my opinion.

Killzone on PS4 is still the most technically advanced and most graphically impressive next gen game on ANY platform including a gaming PC right now and will be for the near future until some other exclusive PS4 game raises that bar even further. My argument stands as this...Killzone on PS4 is doing more impressive graphic effects than any other game I've played to date and this video is more proof in my "prophetic" statement i had made weeks and weeks ago even though shit was slung at me from various PC fanboys bombarding next gen console threads. Dont get me wrong..i love my custom PC rig but man..i've waited long enough for that next leap in graphic effects and KZ on PS4 is finally delivering on that front.

I just feel these next gen consoles are going to raise the bar graphically once again as it seems they are already starting to do....that was another statement i made months ago and we are now beginning to see this very early in these next gen console's lifespan, already.

To me the big reason why i am so excited for these new consoles is that it will push game developers to utilize the new hardware in these consoles and from that...the PC platform will greatly benefit pretty soon in the future..but as always...when new consoles come out..it is always a huge benefit for PC hardware because it gets more utilized than it has been for the last 4-5 years.

Anyways... i am quite impressed with the graphical tech being used in Killzone PS4...i am already a major geek when it comes to videogame graphic tech so when i began seeing the killzone PS4 videos months ago..i knew we were in for something very specia while i was getting hammered on by PC fanboys stating "bah..we already have PC games more technically advanced in the master race, yada yada yada" .. but i held firm because i knew what i was seeing in the killzone PS4 videos..some very advanced graphic effects that some others were quite blind to see i guess. My argument to those fanboys was basically this.."Sure current PC games DO have two big advantages in current PC games, they have much higher resolutions and better AA/AF but that is not what i mean...i mean in pure advanced graphic effects Killzone PS4 is raising the bar graphically in any videogame to date" ...that was my argument and that is still my argument today and i believe i was right back then and i believe i am right, right now! :p

Well at the end of it all..everyone wins. All platforms will benefit. I am just glad current gen is finally over because i really do enjoy both PC and console gaming but it got very dull to see how far they milked the current consoles ..i simply couldn't take it anymore because while graphics and graphic effects aren't everything..it sure is a big enough deal to me personally that i had to leave console gaming a few years ago. Finally we have new air to breath and it will be exciting times for both Next Gen PC & Console gaming!!

So basically, reading his quote, if he's right, that's not really realtime water, in the sense that the waves positions and undulations. are not realtime calculated, but rather offline generated and imported as a streamed point cloud of sorts.

That is same exact thing ND did for their water flooding scene in UC3 (or at least I think that's what they did, because I can't believe it was fully realtime).

Add me. We can suck together at our leisure.

Team ICO made the same sacrifices in SotC (resolution being 512x488) and framerate. So if Crytek sucks for it, so does Team ICO ;)

Of couse, that's not the case.

And yes, HDR lighting adds a lot to the games, which is why it's one of the main improvements of the KZSF engine.

Yeah, I forgot they didn't have this. The thing is, the non-HDR approach really worked great for the bleak look of KZ2, and really didn't work for more colourful look of KZ3.

One is fps which requires quick reflexes others are action adventure game one which used low res specially for low res blurry effect. other is a game where you mostly hold on titan and stab it that doesn't require quick reflexes. great comparison nonetheless

Most games were played on CRT back then and res was not as import as it is now .
Also it was 512 x 224 or 512 x 256 so lower than 512 x 488 if i remember right .
Either way man that was long ago :(
