Kinect 'has not yet provided rich enough experiences' says Microsoft - But Xbox One will change all of that.

http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/consoles/kinect-has-not-yet-provided-rich-enough-experiences-says-microsoft-1176280

"Xbox's UK marketing director Harvey Eagle has told TechRadar that the Kinect on Xbox 360 did not provide experiences as rich as Microsoft would have hoped, but that the Xbox One's motion controller will be a huge step on.

Microsoft has taken a calculated risk in bundling the Kinect with its next-gen console, something which has pushed its price well beyond that of rival PlayStation 4.

Eagle, speaking at the first official UK showcase of the console, responded to TechRadar's question about how the new Kinect would improve on the often tacked on feeling of interactivity in the prior generation to become a vital part of the user experience.

"With the Xbox One, content and game creators generally know that [Kinect] is there and can start generating content that is more predictable for everybody that owns an Xbox and that's an important difference," he said.

"With things like voice and gesture, which work much better on Kinect for Xbox One, it's a much more integral part of the platform that it ever was previously when it was a peripheral, an add-on, and game creators didn't necessarily know it was there.

"The [previous] experiences haven't been as rich as we would have hoped so we're changing that and that's why we bundled it with the Xbox One and why we believe it's integral to the box.

"It's part of the user interface and for some tasks it's the best way to access them. If you want to switch between different functions and actions on the Xbox One of the fastest ways to make that happen is just to tell the box and it instantly does it.

"You don't have to look for a remote, you don't have to switch inputs you don't have to switch devices you don't have to call up menus: We think there are fundamental differences to the way the Kinect will work for Xbox One."
One up?

Sony has chosen not to bundle the PlayStation Camera with the PS4, something that keeps the price lower but does mean that developers will have to be mindful about making motion control integral to games - especially cross platform ones.

The PS3 was more costly, and more delayed, because of the inclusion of a Blu-ray player, something that caused huge problems at the time, but slowly became an important plus point for the console.

Microsoft may well hope that Kinect's killer features can be as successful for Xbox One, and that people will be prepared to stump up a little more cash for the extra functionality."

tbqh whatever plusses it had, it came with some negatives (mandatory installs, "make a sandwich" meme). Isn't the blu-ray player in x1 soppossed to be custom, wonder if the read speeds are improved.

Kinect 'has not yet provided rich enough experiences' - and still hasn't being the key phrase.

You want buy in on the kinect then provide a must have title on the Xbox One to justify it. Not promises of one to come.

Honestly the new Kinect is the main thing that interests me in XBONE right now. My kids love the original so much thanks to Double Fine's amazing work.

My problem with Kinect for games is that I want to lie on my couch like a paralyzed seal on dry land while I play games. And I doubt that Kinect will recognize me as a human being in that situation.

Well, I wish you'd told me that 3 years ago when I bought Kinect 1...such a waste of a purchase, I had hopes...

I still haven't seen any great gaming things for Kinect thus far on Xbox One either. Time to step up your game MS, it almost looks like you're not even trying.

That footage of fighter within just looked embarrassing. As long as they don't show a good way to use kinect I see no reason in wanting it.

Like fighter within?

It's unfair as a generalization but it still makes me chuckle.

XONE? The cable box from Comcast? I'M SUCH A CONFUSED CONSUMER.

I prefer X1.

I dont' get Xbone...outside of being a way to make fun/get away with taking a shot at the system.

It wasn't Xb360 was it? So X1 or Xone makes more sense.

Anyway, on subject. I'd buy the Kinect just for the voice integration and ease of use with my young kids.

I wasn't too thrilled to flail around my living room with the first Kinect. I doubt more precise detection is going to change that.

Not to sound too much like a older gamer (which I am) - but I am just not interested in using voice or hand gestures to navigate my gaming console.

Strangely enough, I would be interested in having the voice controls (no motion controls) built into my TV/cable box. "TV, record Breaking Bad."

Net Net - My TV is always on when I am gaming, but I do not turn my console on when I am watching TV. And I would not be willing to change that just so that my TV viewing habits could be monitored and the research sold.

I know weird ...

X1 is literally what Comcast is calling their box.

I'd say the original Kinect had a more hyped showing than this one, what with Milo and the height of Wii popularity. The new Kinect just feels like it's bogging down the XBone through a high price point and little to show for it.

MS have really failed to show the value of forced Kinect if pre-order sales are lagging and they need extra incentives to boost value. I think that's the exact opposite of what they were hoping for. Kinect would be dead in the water if it wasn't bundled though. They've not shown me a reason to care for it seeing as though I'd have to buy it.

Yeah I know.

So when you go into a gaming forum...where everyone is talking about Xbox, Nintendo, and Playstation...you're saying you don't know what XONE means..

Seriously...you're serious? LOL

Yeah, I also know your not serious and aren't adding to the conversation...and it's silly/ridiculous to act like one would think people are refering to Comcast when making a post about the X1/XOne on a gaming forum.

On subject again, I'm curious as to how they're going to integrate sound and reading blood pressure into a survival horror game too.

The underlying problem is aside from the UI there isn't many applications that can be beneficial to the gamer during game play.

The other unknown quantity is the fact if the Playstation 4 camera can replicate similar technology during game play the "Better with Kinect" label can't even exist anymore.

I personally don't see how Kinect is going to be any different this generation compared to the last generation - especially with what we've seen so far - the same shit.

My problem with Kinect for games is that I want to lie on my couch like a paralyzed seal on dry land while I play games. And I doubt that Kinect will recognize me as a human being in that situation.

This.
Also, like Francis (character that boogie made up) fat people don't get recognized either.

I'm surprised they've barely shown any Kinect 2.0 action for games. We've seen a lot of menu navigation and a couple of games that use it, but aside from that it's strangely barren for a system that has a mandatory Kinect.

I wonder if there are parts of MS that wished they'd held Kinect over for their next gen system.

Not because it would be a lot better but the experience of the first seems to have created some reputational risk for its successor. If this was a first time around for Kinect it would have all the novelty value and little first hand experience to detract from hype for it. All the same hype as the first, layered onto their new system.

sorry kinect but I like to sit on my couch and not move while im gaming. I also do not want to yell at my console while im playing. People do neat things with the kinect no doubt but its never anything sustainable that creates a long lasting experience, its usually something you wanna try a couple times and go "neat" then go back to blowing shit up slumped over your couch.

It is still a net asset for the ecosystem, no matter what some folks think. While hardcore gamers don't care much for it, the casuals who love to play candy crush saga also seem to love to mess around with our kinect when they visit. Dance central propably sold half of the line ts out there.

However as a more hardcore gamer (or used to be nowadays) and looking at added value, I still use my ps3 as a blue ray player way more often then I personally use kinect though. Different strokes for different people.

They've got time to prove that out. Hopefully next year they'll take the 3 most obvious applications, Kinect Sports, Dance Central, and the fitness game, and make them considerably richer experiences than their original Kinect predecessors.

I'm hoping to see a lot more imagination from devs using it this time around some of the features lend themselves to not just 'wave hand games' but the so called 'core' games as well. That said Kinect was worth it to me.

But as with most of these things it's going to take MS making sure their own devs and partners are leading the way. Stuff like Dance Central and Kinect Sports were amazing for me and then Happy Action Theater showed the more is it a game or not kind of features That the Kinect did well. I also think letting some smaller teams loose on it will in the short team reap some gold.

Seems to me like the lag is still going to be too much of an issue for it to be useful in traditional games.

I feel like the only way I'll be making use of it this gen beyond yelling the odd voice command is if MS add oculus rift support and they can use kinect to add 3d head tracking.
