Kinect is the biggest problem with Xbox One and not really optional.

Kinect is going to be Xbox One's life saver once they hit mass market price.

Xbox One without Kinect vs PS4 would have Xbox One losing at every corner but with Kinect it has something that it could potentially come out a winner with.

All the Wii owners who are still buying up Just Dance is gonna have to upgrade one day & if Kinect could nail down that market in about 3 years when the price come down people will buy it up.

Kinect One just need a good game that will set it apart from everything else out there.

I don't agree much with the Wii audience jumping ship to the Xbone, but I do think both the HDMI-IN and Kinect have the potential to take them mass market. More so the Kinect, but not for game things but instead because of the voice controls and media integration.

To all those asking why someone would need to remove kinect, I have a projector setup and right now need my consoles connected to the back of me where the projector sit. Of course MS in all of their wisdom deicded to make the kinect port proprietary and extra short so I cannot run the Kinect to the front of my home theatre setup.

Camera auto sign in is awesome it spots me even with my friends around. I dont know why anyone would want to get rid of it.
Maybe the OP doesn't like the prospect of third parties seeing and listening into what goes around his house? Before you say laptop, smartphone, etc, those cameras and microphones are not on until you turn them on.

I think Sony did something brilliant by not including a camera for the PS4.

1. The lowered the price of the PS4 vs. the XB1.

2. Kept the Kinect as just a gimmick.

PS4 is slated with its slightly greater sales numbers, and better overall performance to be the better gaming system for multi platform games. Even with the PS4 and XB1 being neck and neck what multi platform game companies are going to put the extra effort into integrating Kinect beyond being used for some gimmick thing for voice command/QTE etc. when only half of their audience will buy the XB1 version.

TLDR: Sony not adding a camera to the PS4 limits how much dev time multi platform game companies will put into Kinect and will likely keep it as it was on the 360, a gimmick (from a gaming standpoint). Only Microsoft's own studios will likely spend the time to give us decent Kinect integration or something completely new.

^^^. I had never thought about it this way but it's true. By not including EYE with the PS4 it cuts MS off at the knees as far as Kinect goes. Not just with price, but with game developers too. MS believed they were setting the pace during development of X1. They were too bold about their decisions to believe otherwise. They announced DRM, and were shocked by the backlash. They were taken by surprise with the RAM situation. They believed Sony was all in with their EYE and knew their Kinect 2 was better so why not design the system around one of their strengths? MS has miscalculated just about every step of the way. As a result they have positioned themselves poorly for the duration of this generation. Their only hope to being number one is if Titanfall is the next HALO. That is, a game that sells gobs of systems for years on end and defines the console. It's going to be a tall order due to the fact that the market is already saturated with shooters.

Because you have proof showing that this data is released to third parties despite the adamant defense from Microsoft. Quit injecting you perceptions in as truth.

I went into the Settings and shut off Kinect about a half hour into setting my XB1 up. Why you ask? It's not all the spying conspiracy shit. It's the fact that it almost never recognizes me; 90% of the time I see "guest" hovering next to my head. If I had it turned on, I'd have to manually sign into my XBL account anyways. I'm just cutting to the chase.

If you shut it down only after half an hour, you probably missed the troubleshooting part, where you can train the face recognition algorithm by telling him that "yes, that's my face, you should have recognized me".

I have one of my 360 connected to my projector at the top of a shelf, and it has a kinect connected too. Of course it can't do any face/gesture function from there, but it's still functional for voice commands.

You should recalibrate it with a higher volume on your speakers, the device is designed to filter out your speakers and hear you over the TV, which usually works quite well.
As for the commands that don't register, pay attention to the tone and intensity for the commands that worked and those that didn't. For mine I know the tone that will work every time, although it's not one I'd use naturally.

That is exactly the problem with kinect. it's trying to replace a system with 100% accuracy every single time (controller/remote). It can work for some flawless and yet still could be unworkable for others. that's why i never understood how MS was trying to make it mandatory , as by default regardless of how good kinect voice recognition is it will never be able to satisfy many.

unless it has a 100% success rate like a controller. it's always going to be a pain

I'm having a really hard time playing games without using the controllers. It's really annoying. Then I stop pretending that I don't have controllers and everything works fine. Go figure.

If you hate the mere concept and existence of Kinect, buying a system built around having Kinect (to the point that they included it in the box with all systems) was literally the worst possible option to take.

For those that use this as a dire concern, better stop using phones, chats, IM, email, cell phones, social media, driving on the streets, public places with cameras and in the internet. Have fun!

You don't see a difference between those things and putting a camera in your house?

Besides, what a ridiculous attitude to have. The government is spying on us in some ways so let's not worry about them spying on us in every way?!

Hey if you have nothing to hide you're golden, amirite?

Then maybe getting a console with a mountable camera and microphone was a mistake if his paranoia runs that deep.

yeah JrBaconCheeseburger, it's irritating that those nag screens wont go away and auto sign-in isn't there. I've never connected it to the xb3, I only play games on it. I don't want or need the other things that they want you to use with it.

So Kinect isn't optional because removing it means you have to select a profile to sign in?

And because it shows a "connect Kinect" prompt it the place where the usual Kinect voice recognition visual prompts would usually go?

Hmmm.

No.

It is clunky as fuck since 360 auto sign in was much faster and doesn't require an ugly camera on my tv stand.

360 takes a minute to boot and auto-sign in.

XB1 takes around fiteen seconds.

You could have booted your Xbox One and signed in about three or four times by the time you auto-signed in once on a 360......

It's a shame because mandatory Kinect is the reason I can't even consider buying an Xbone. Get that shit out of here :-|

I love these posts. Sorry to single you out here, but it irks me to see "gamers" who wouldn't play great games because of a fucking camera.

The marketing for the console said you could turn off or disconnect the camera, without mentioning anything about annoying, unskippable messages always showing up on his screen. Maybe the OP bought the console to play Dead Rising or Forza and did not care about the camera?

My point is, of all those privacy concerns, you pick Kinect as the biggest area of concern? The fact is most use Kinect as a point in console wars then drag NSA as a valid argument. It is old and tired. Don't buy the damn system and move on.

While ideally this wouldn't be an issue, the Kinect is an integral part of the XB1 and why it's 100$ more expensive than its direct competition. I don't know how you could rationalize investing in it on an extensive level without leveraging Kinect's feature set, minor inconveniences caused by its exclusion from the system aren't important contextually, in my opinion.

How long is the cable to connect the kinect to the xbox one ?
I game in a home theater room with a projector on the ceiling and all the game systems and hdmi receiver on a shelf against the back wall. In order to have an xbox one connected with kinect I would have to put it on the side wall and I would need an hdmi cable at least 25' long to connect it to the receiver and I am still not sure if the kinect cable is long enough even in that setup. That combined that with the fact that I basically want nothing to do with kinect to begin with has alot to do with why I havent picked up an xbox one.

Lets be dramatic here. He has to now select a profile with no auto-login. That is such a inconvenience that it has ruined gaming on the Xbox. Wow.

My game systems are in a media closet in the main game room/theater and not anywhere near the TV or projector, so kinect was never an option there. On the bedroom TV, my wife has an issue with having the camera in there, which I can't really blame her for. I have a classic system rack with about 18 old systems hooked up at the bar, but that is in no way a good place for the kinect, so that is out also.

I don't like motion games, so basically, it is a solution for a problem I never had. I can understand completely why others wouldn't want to pay for it or hook it up.

I wasn't a fan of the X360 Kinect but the XB1 Kinect is great. Use it for Skype, watching TV snap and used it also in Ryse and bf4. It's not intrusive at all and adds to my gaming experience.

I love the new Kinect. Once you get over the initial learning curve the voice stuff is fantastic. My only complaint is that MS needs to come out with an extension to make the cord longer.

This is similar to my situation also.

My biggest problem with Kinect is I thought it was for games. They could have done voice control a lot cheaper. I dont even know of any high profile games announced for this thing.

I've had mine disconnected since I got the system (still on top of the tv ready to be plugged in though), it takes like all of three button presses to sign in without it.

No offense, but did you pay any attention to the buildup for the Xbox One and the features of the Kinect? Kinect Sports Rivals is coming out and you can use Kinect for most major releases so far.

It's big an ugly and stands out in a media centre... Which is a bad thing. It shouldn't scream "hey look there's a camera here!" it should be practically invisible.

Sorry but the critical argument of this thread is extravagant. It takes one second to sign in. This is hardly validation that MS is being disingenuous.

I actually think kinect is the best thing about the console and everyone who has bought an XB1 knew what they were getting.

I just can't justify paying more money for it when I am literally never going to touch it. Not what I want in a console man.

The system was designed around kinect being mandatory. Did you think reversing that requirement would be as easy as flipping a switch?

Bullshit. He doesnt want it connected, the reason why is irrelevant.

Get a cover for the camera or wait for an update to fix the issue. Not much else can be done other then that. If the core of the complaint is that the console should work flawlessly without Kinect then I can't disagree, I just think considering it being connected was an inherent part of the system 4 months ago that having issues at launch is to be expected. There are several niggling little launch issues. Though not ideal, this issue seems to be easily and quickly rectifiable on the OP's end.

I didn't say it was the biggest area of concern. But it is a justified area of concern. I don't intend to buy an Xbone but I'll criticise the US surveillance state any time I see fit, cheers.
