Kinect will sell in Spain with "Mexican language" support.

I really don't care, I always play games in their original language with english subitles (or well localized english); and it would be truly horrible if they dubbed the games in "chilean", because in Chile different ways of talking come from different social status, and it is a nightmare to get it right. I prefer the "mexican spanish" a thousand times.

The chilean dubbing in the old Garfield cartoon was fucking awesome...

That's actually quite insulting if you're suggesting that the true Mexican dialect is the same as a poor fast talking rambling fool. But hey, no nasty biases on your part, right ^_~

C'mon it was a joke, don't take it too seriously...

True, forgot about that. I remember Garfield's creator saying that Garfield's voice in spanish was the best voice for Garfield (pretty big news here =P).

Anyway his voice wasn't in the movie for some shitty reasons (FOX-USA saying that a mexican voice would attract more mexican public, or some shit like that). (Thank god because the movie sucked ass).

To be fair Spain is third in total spanish speakers. Behind Mexico and the US where spanish with a mexican accent is spoken. So fuck your shit Spain. Portugal recently made Brazilian spellings and pronunciation official Spain needs to cope as well.

I love that the OP actually says 'proper Spanish'.

Wow, you guys can be such obnoxious bastards...

Proper Spanish(spain) support for Spaniards...obviously, since the Mexican Spanish MS introduced for Kinect in Spain is not proper, right if you want, beacuse basically...it dosn't work...for Spaniards...

There's no hide meaning...

Bad move, but it's not that big of a tragedy. I believe even Spain's own RAE considers the Mexican Spanish (Central Region) to be the most neutral, accent-wise.

Spanish is very proud of its linguistical heritage, and many Spanish-speaking countries have their own institution which takes good care of the language (all of them having their roots in the Real Academia de la Lengua, which was established in 1713). Go read some of this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Academia_Española

Btw, the whole "proper" Spanish thing is pretty sad. Heck, even in Spain we have pretty different accents and nobody dares to say which one is proper or not, they are all fine and dandy and just different uses of the language by the speakers, who are the ones who, in the end, make Spanish as rich as it is.

Osea wey, a que no...

I like how spain is just a different dialect? do people know how many English dialects there are in England alone? Or just America alone.

Halo 2 huh... That was seriously annoying. It killed the mood of the game so badly. It felt like watching some bad Mexican drama :(

There are a lot of dialects in Spain too, but if you use Castilian for Kinect, most Spanish people would have no problems at all.

Put it in Mexican, and it will be quite a mess for certain stuff, because the verbs used for certain things are completely different.

Though some people act if people from Spain are supposed to say "Pinche guebo; Xbox" or "Que onda wuey"; while waiting for the update.

Yeah, spanish in general is so rich that you'll get yourself in a big trouble trying to find the "mexican" accent. I have lived in the north (Sonora), central region (Jalisco, Colima, Mexico City) and been in the South (Tabasco, Yucatán). None of the people could exactly tell where I was from, because I now have a fucked up lexicon from all around the country :lol

Another day another kinect thread for gaf to bash with. Aren't you guys tired of this yet?

thats just what i was thinking... it's starting to get a bit tiresome. And 99% of the bashers will melt away when kinect comes out and sells gangbusters.

...and if it comes out and it doesn't sell well... then live with it, it's a console accessory, not nuclear war. life will, almost certainly, go on.

From this thread you'd think console manufacturers have always been good at localisation until this very incident. :lol

Well, look the bight side; you'll learn a lot of new things, like greeting your xbox with a "que tranza vato" in the same way I learned that "sois la caña" somehow meant I was doing a good job in Guitar Hero :lol

I remember watching "Y tu mamá también" and thank god the dvd had a "lexicon". Most of it was completely impossible to understand for me :D :D .

And yet some people keeps thinking Mexican and Spain's Spanish are the same.. :lol

I'm from Spain and even though now I don't even like Spain's Spanish for my gaming (I'd rather have it in English), back when I didn't understand English all that well I enjoyed my games in Spain's Spanish and having it in Mexican Spanish would always feel... off. I guess it would be the same for people from Mexico listening to something in our Spanish, but yeah...

I think you misunderstand me. The problem here is bigger then just spanish dialects etc. Voice recognition itself is the problem.

These negative kinect threads are becoming tiresome. Although I guess voice recognition is different to the things mentioned before.

So this is like their halo 2(or 3 can't remember) translation no?

IIRC they did the same, subbed it in mexican and called it "neutral spanish" :lol :lol

MS games division and spain doesn't go well together.

The "outrage" you're talking about happened twice.

With Halo 2, after having Halo dubbed in Spanish from Spain and Halo 2 advertised on TV with the same dubbing actors Halo 1 had, we received Halo 2 in "Neutral Spanish". There was a huge outrage back them. I was very pissed myself. Everything was fine again with Halo 3.

With Resident Evil 4 the "outrage" wasn't anywhere close to the former one. But it's true, there was a lot of people complaining about the lack of immersion the game had for a Spaniard. You're set up in a Spanish rural setting and then everybody has an accent you usually find thousands of km far off distance. I think I can understand how they felt.

Anyways, this case (Kinect) is completely different and it's not about hearing a different accent. It's about the console understanding what you're saying, so I think we shouldn't be comparing it.

The outrage I am talking about is not just relegated to videogames.

From what I can tell, Kinect will be using a Neutral Accent/Dialect when it is first released, and then later on it will be tweaked with other dialects/accents. I am pretty sure a similar thing is being done with English. Being outraged that Microsoft is using "Mexican Spanish" which will make it impossible for any Spaniard to use is just downright insulting.

Read this line from the OP and tell me with a straight face that there are no underlying racist undertones in it:

So, using voice control in the "kinnect Hub" won't work for most spaniards unless they watch the whole Cantinflas film collection and learns how to speak like a true Mexican.

EDIT

for those who don't know who Cantinflas was:

Fortino Mario Alfonso Moreno Reyes (August 12, 1911 – April 20, 1993) was a Mexican comedian and stage and film actor, known professionally as Cantinflas. He often portrayed impoverished campesinos or a peasant of pelado origin.

The OP obviously meant it as an insult.

POLLO!!! COMO MAS POJJJJJSSSSHHOOOO!
It's only sexy when cute girls do it.

IMO, I think Colombian girls speak the best Spanish. It makes sense though, Mexico is the largest Spanish speaking country so a lot of their translates stuff is exported.

Yeah, one of my favorite models atm is from Argentina, Tati Cotliar. :D

There's also just something special about Colombian girls, can't really explain it.

Spaniards being intolerant to the rest of the spanish speaking world? That has to be new! :lol

I don't think is about that but more about being almost 2 different languajes.

Coger in Spanish (Spain) is to pick up.

Coger in Spanish (Mexico) is to fuck.

:D

Intolerant? What are you talking about? Wanting something like this (voice recognition) released in your own language is being an intolerant? It would be the same for a Mexican wanting it in Mexican Spanish, or an Argentinian in Argentinian Spanish.

We don't know how much of an issue it will be until it's released, but in the worst case, it could end up being a big issue until Spain's Spanish is introduced. Or it could be something that nobody has an issue with, but again, we don't know.

Also, most of the people posting around here are not Spaniards.

(And last but not least, I don't even care about Kinect, I don't live in Spain anymore, and if I were to get Kinect I would probably use it in English)

That's the only evidence you have to proof I really meant it as a racist insult?

Maybe I used Cantinflas because he was and still is rather famous here in Spain, and probably one of the most recognizable Mexican figures around here, I don't know....

But of course you read my thoughts and clearly see my true intentions...damn you and your powers!!.

That is a joke.

About the spanish problem, I understand where you are coming from, but you'll have to accept that as long as Spain gets more irrelevant (in terms of market, economy, etc), you'll see more and more of this mexican spanish translation and problems.
Right now even the Spanish economy is fucked, Spain remains as the 4th European biggest gaming market, and only US/NA and Japan are bigger than these other European markets.

Not Mexico.

This is why 99% of the games are localized to Spanish Spanish and not Mexican Spanish. I only remember Halo 2 as a game localized to Mexican Spanish and not Spanish Spanish.
