What do you wanted them to do? Not make games on other platforms just because some people might get angry about it?
There's absolutely nothing wrong if a handheld game decided to advance and develop the plot even more. There's a lot of people playing these games for the story so nobody wants filler games that bring nothing in the grand scheme of things. There's a reason why no one cares about Re:coded.
People need to let go of this per-conceived notion that only video games released in consoles matter and everything else is not worth their time. The days of handheld games being nothing more than smaller console games with simpler gameplay has been over since the DS and PSP came around.
Read what I wrote more clearly. The issues with the appeal of this series (and this is coming from a fan who jumped in '06 with KH2 as his first game) is that to follow it, until very recently, you had to either:
a) Don't follow it and just read summaries online/watch YT videos (which is what a good chunk, if not the majority, did)
b) Buy/Already own several different platforms to follow the story. GBA, DS, PSP, 3DS and with X also play a PC/mobile game.
Again, the issue isn't that they made games on different platforms. Some of the best gameplay IS on said other platforms (I personally favour Birth by Sleep a lot, some others love the card system in Chains of Memory), and they're (in general) good games too. The issue is that to actively follow the story you had to jump around like crazy, which is something most people don't do. Most people get 1, 2 current gen systems tops (be they home consoles or handhelds)
The best way to avoid all these collections (2 separate collections on the PS3, 1 Mega Pack + 2.8 on the PS4) they have been making, to be sure fans understand what's happening when KH3 eventually arrives, would have been to make the handheld titles in particular multiplat, when possible, or even share a home console version too (again, multiplat if possible).
Instead what we got was a sequence more or less like this: PS2->GBA->PS2->PSP->DS->3DS->PC/Mobile to follow the current saga/arc.
Of course people who jumped in with the PSP/DS/3DS were confused as all hell, especially in the case of those without any acess to a PS2 (or later on a PS3). And I can't blame them. For the longest time the easiest way for any KH fan to keep up was just to watch YT videos, read summaries and go onto dedicated sites.
In my mind the way they went about it was weird and only hurt the franchise more than it helped, even if did produce some good (even great I'd dare say) games because of it. Granted, the PS4 solution at least is a sound one, that's where new fans/old fans that only played 1 or 2 games can/should start (again) going forward.
