Kingsglaive Final Fantasy Opens at #10 on Japan's Weekly Box Office Chart, ($335K)

How much did this cost? Are we looking at another Spirits Within scenario?

I think Blur Studios, the people behind many high quality CGI trailers, could cost like $1 million for each minute.

Obviously for a full movie not every minute cost that much, a lot of the initial cost on modelling, etc.. aren't accounted for later. So I could easily see this costing like $20-$30 millions.

Sounds about right. That could have produced a pretty decent budgeted game or 3-4 smaller games.

I'm hoping its the bluray release that helps this be successful like DVD/Bluray sustained Advent Children.

Final Fantasy should never be in theaters (see: Spirits Within)

Speak for yourself, I just want Final Fantasy movie with crystals, black mage, dragoon, steampunk/medieval settings, chocobo and moogle. The ones released so far aint it.

Was this even heavily promoted?

I frankly don't see how it matters either. Kingsglaive exists to promote FFXV and to be an added bonus in a premium box, not for its own sake. This felt like a token theater release if anything.

With 49 studios involved and top class visuals. We maybe looking at a worse scenario than SW.

You're crazy.

You're crazy.
I mean just the rendering times, the studios involved, the lead actors, and the constant iteration would be expensive as hell. I don't think they're making a profit off of this film. The studio won't be financially crippled but they won't get the chance to do this again for a long while.

That sucks because apparently it's pretty decent.

They'll likely make most of their money for the film in the west off of the Deluxe Edition though. Not sure why they approved 18 external projects for FFXV before they figured out if the game was going to be any good.

I'm confused by the bomba label. This was announced as a VOD and direct to video release, and more importantly a pack in with the special editions. It was later announced it would get a limited theater run, but people will still be able to get it when FFXV launches in a couple of months. So this is a direct to video and a videogame promotional movie, getting a limited run in theaters. I don't know what people were expecting here.

So had this stayed out of the theaters, as originally planned, everything would be ok, but because it was put in limited theaters for fans and still made around $8,000 per screen it is a bomb?

I don't even care about the success or failure of the movie and it may well end up a failure if VOD and physical and streaming sales aren't good, but I just feel the discussion here has been too quick to thrash this for something that it isn't. Certainly putting this in the same discussion as Spirits Within is as Jett said, Crazy.

They are selling a brand. Doesn't matter if the game is good or not.

Somewhat puzzling given that it seems to have gained positive reception. I mean, I can't think of many decent adult targeted CG movies...Maybe none in recent years at least.

Maybe there is a reason for that... as in adults don't generally go to movie theaters to see CG movies?

To be fair it did pretty bad for the amount of theaters it was put it given what Duckroll posted in this and the Kingsglaive OT. As for the people quick to trash on the whole thing calling it a bomb it's something to be expected. Not everyone is gonna seek out the information on the movie and how it was announced as a DVD/Digital release and only recently got slated for limited release. People just see this thread and go "Well they made Spirits Within that one time" and "The game this is based on took 10 years to make" and make their judgments on that. Quick and uninformed judgments will be made and it's just something you gotta accept.

If Square-Enix was banking on this being a breakout hit in theaters to recoup the costs of making it they'd be crazy and screwed. Of course that's not the case though since it wasn't even announced with a Theatrical Release in mind until about 6 weeks ago. It remains to be seen if they will recoup the costs and if it'll received well in the West so we'll have to see on that. For people who assume the movie is a "bomba" (I'm actually unaware of what a "bomba" is just assuming it's weird slang for bombed) I really can't say that's accurate just yet. For those who think this is Spirits Within #2 I think you're nuts. This isn't going to crush Square-Enix and I'm 100% sure they wouldn't have made this if it could.

It's a movie based on an unproven game and one with heavily Westernized characters in a series not really known for that type of thing. I imagine there would have been a greater turn out for another FF7 movie.

Well, it is a spin off movie based on an unreleased game with .. unproven popularity let's say. The characters they've been communicating on in magazines for months are not even in the movie..

The movie is just reallllly luxurious preorder bonus for the game.
this is how I feel.

Not surprised at all.

No, it didn't. THIS NARRATIVE NEEDS TO DIE. lol

They made a huge financial loss, it endangered the merger with Enix and Square had to sell almost fifth of the company to Sony to bandage their wounds. It also resulted in a big restructure of the company.

Call it whatever, but it was a big hit. If Kingsglaive bombed now nothing like that would happen.

I think for SE it's way more important that the movie gives the game relevance rather than box office earnings.
But sure they could have done a better job at marketing/announcing it earlier.

for those that doesn't live in japan and us the movie will be available only when the game releases?

It will be before that, but they haven't announced the date of the digital release yet.

If you're living in US or France then you might get to see it in a theatre, but primary distribution will be digital / streaming / blu-ray.

Sure. but it didn't cripple the company when they recovered the next year with their as planned mainline release and Kingdom Hearts.

I can't imagine this cost much less than Advent Children. Problem with is that, without a wide theatrical run, how do they expect to make their money back? DVD/Bluray sales are much lower now than they were back in 2006 due to streaming (like drastically lower). Better hope for some great streaming deals or write it off as an XV production cost?

22,818 tickets divided by 44 screens means that each screen had 518 people. This is a 3 day weekend for a movie that is not only playing limited, but expected to be watched digitally. Guys you are all calling for doom and gloom based off the title of the thread, this is fine. It's not a blockbuster but for a movie that is packaged in with the games lower end special edition this is completely okay numbers.

So who directed this one? I want to know who is going to be flogged and driven out into the wilderness this time.

Takeshi Nozue, but no one's getting flogged until the movie has actually released in it's primary market and distribution channels.

It's not bombing in Japan because the movie has been declared bad or anything.

Obviously most of the sales will come from digital and bundles and that's what SE is predicting given the initial announcement. The Deluxe Edition of the game charges $30 extra to get the film and that was and is selling better than the regular version on Amazon. Was at the number 1 best selling on Amazon for a couple weeks straight when announced and I imagine that's the version most fans and/or non-fans are preordering.

Beast of No Nation was a massive failure at the box office (33 theaters, $51,000 opening week, $90,777 lifetime) but profitable due to Netflix sales, it's target distribution method.

Hearing really good reviews from the Japanese side, movie sounds solid. I think it definitely didn't bomb since it was in a limited screening too and the movie might be a bit too Hollywood-ish for a Japanese audience.

I hope the movie plays in more American and European theatres because it would be a bit of a waste to just delegate it to a DVD release, especially seeing how mediocre and fan-oriented movies like Angry Birds and WoW got the full theatre treatment.
