Kirby : Triple Deluxe new screenshots / JPN box art

That's a very pretty game. I've never fancied Kirby much, aren't the games super easy?

They're easy, but they're fun as all hell. And they've started catering for more advanced players now - The True Arena in both Super Star Ultra and Return To Dreamland is one of the hardest things I've ever done in my entire life, and the Hard Mode in Return to Dreamland is pretty fucking brutal.

Looks very nice. What's the gimmick in this game or is it very traditional?

Depth. You can go far into the background, and forward towards the screen. Basically like Wario Land Virtual Boy.

Other than that, it's as traditional as a Kirby game is ever going to get.

Oh, that can make for some really interesting level design.

*wishful thinking* if this has any sort of multiplayer pls add online.. haha :( (looking forward to the game regardless, Kirby is awesome)

A good way I've found to recommend Super Star and Return to Dreamland to people is essentially that Kirby's gameplay is the basis for Sakurai's work on Smash Bros.

Super Star especially feels very similar to play.

Dream Collection for Wii has that bonus Challenge game (taken from Return to Dreamland) with new Challenge levels and the Smash ability (that was first in Amazing Mirror)! It's a short but sweet bonus!

Oh, and here's the boxart :

Can a mod edit the title and add (+ Japanese boxart), pretty please?

Mass Attack got pretty tricky to beat every level and collect every gold coin.

I'd love some Kirby recommendations in general. I'm planning on picking up the Dream Collection, Return to Dreamland, and Epic Yarn. Anything else must-have? I see Nightmare in Dreamland (ETA: and Amazing Mirror) had mixed to positive reviews....

ETA: wait, NID is a remake of Kirby's Adventure? Is it worth it to play both? (Also, is it better to get Dream Collection or Super Star Ultra if I mainly want to play Super Star?) Thanks!

What I don't understand is why Nintendo chose to emulate Kirby's Super Star in the dream collection with a filter that emulates bloody composite output.

I know it's to keep it faithful to what the majority used to play it like in the past, but it looks shit. I play my SNES games through RGB and the difference is so vast it's hilarious.

Nightmare in Dreamland is a remake of Kirby's Adventure, which is included in Dream Collection. That's a pretty good set right there, since Dream Collection covers most of the big "mainline" Kirby titles.

If you don't have Canvas Curse, tracking that down might be worth it (good luck though). Amazing Mirror is pretty good as well, though maybe not the strongest entry.

Looks gray and gritty like all other FPS games these days.

Oh wait, I mean it looks extremely saturated, simplistic and rounded like all other similar games.

If the first criticism (about FPSes) is valid, is the other one valid too?
The reason I'm bringing this is up is because when I saw those screenshots I immediately thought: "I've seen this before. Exactly this. And I'm pretty tired of this look".

Nightmare in Dreamland is really awesome. Only minor complaint is that it's easier than the original game (Kirby's Adventure), but I really like the enhancements it has, especially the solid framerate and great controls. It also apparently has MetaKnight mode.

Avoid Amazing Mirror. The novelty of it being a metroidvania Kirby wears off very quick then you'll realize how poorly designed the game is. It's extremely tedious to play.

It's really not though. The paths to the macguffins to finish the game are pretty straightforward and easy to get to, and all the extra chests are clevely hidden with some pretty creative puzzle solving (that you can totally cheese by just using the ultimate power, if you don't feel like doing it right the first time). It suffers a bit from the multiplayer focus and being based directly on Nightmare in Dream Land, but it's still a pretty novel game worth at least one playthrough.

Dimps also took part in development, but I'm not sure what.. but I wouldn't be surprised if it's related to level design.

Dimps has never worked on a Kirby game.

One-way doors are annoying. I really hate how I enter the wrong door and I'm forced to start over my way to the area I intend to go just because the door doesn't have a way back. It's annoying design and it's something that shouldn't be in a Kirby game if you ask me.

They apparently worked on the sounds and additional work (but doesn't specify what).

What is this foolishness.

I consider it the worst too. It's the only Kirby title where I can't find any fun with it. There is nothing "foolish" about having an opinion different to yours, knock it off with that attitude.

You're given a myriad of shortcuts, a free teleport to the home base and all the one-way doors lead to some sort of reward. It's not like one-way doors were new to Kirby at the time.

Yes they did.

You're right, I forgot about it and checked the credits again. I remember them being credited with design and sound now.

So if you've got a vendetta, there you go.

It's extremely tedious to find new areas I want to go to. The point is that whenever I went to the wrong door, I have to teleport myself back home and try again and repeat the process til I find the right way. It's not very fun.

Er, given that this is a metroidvania, one-way doors is a pretty awful idea this time.

I really hope you aren't implying I hate the game because it's partly developed by Dimps.

EDIT: you probably aren't, re-reading the post. hard to tell... lol

I'll have to go back and check, but I don't remember this being an issue except for some of the extra chests. There were a few paths that forced you toward a goal, but the game did make a point of marking these on the map after discovering one - they gave you all the tools to avoid it.

The Great Cave Offensive pulled the same nonsense in the underground castle, where the wrong door will kick you out entirely.

It's not much of a Metroidvania either, more akin to ALBW where you've got a loose set of goals and a dozen ways to accomplish them.

You did just say "Dimps also took part in development" in response to it being a bad game because it wasn't developed by HAL, but I wasn't.

The differing factor here is that The Great Cave Offensive isn't a full Kirby release, and that part is a tiny, tiny tiny part of Super Star. That shit in Amazing Mirror lasts for the entire sodding game.

But the game gives you the tools to plan your route and avoid hitting the same fate over and over. You've got an automatic map, you can find complete ones in each area, doors are marked based on whether or not you've entered them before.

This may end up being very relevant to Triple Deluxe too, since what we've seen includes some treasure chests scattered around the levels.

Thanks for the info, all! It sounds like Dream Collection, Epic Yarn and Return to Dreamland is a good place to start. BTW, I can't recommend Mass Attack highly enough to anyone who has not played it. One of my favorite Kirbys for sure.

I love how these Nintendo games can just come out of no where and get announced and released only months later. HEY kids! A sequel to A Link to the Past! You used to have to wait years in hype filled agony, but NO, it comes out in 7 months! It's crazy I tell you. ...I almost miss the old ways, if only to appreciate things a little bit more before release.

I wasn't actively looking for treasure, I was trying to find new levels to defeat bosses and collect the mirror shards. I had a very hard time finding new areas, and it often takes me hours to find them due to the convoluted setup.

I've used the map and it barely helped. I had a hard time getting to the correct path to whatever level I want to get to. I just feel that I'm wasting my time too much because the game doesn't make things clear enough. I feel it isn't my fault half of the times that I went to the wrong path because the game is too vague. Maybe I am doing something very wrong, but this isn't something that should happen in a Kirby game...

I understand these kind of games you have to figure out things yourself (and I do like figuring things out),but I felt Amazing Mirror did it the tedious way. I think one-way doors shouldn't be a thing and just allow me to go back to the room I was in previously, I feel it would make a world of difference.

Great Cave Offensive was a whole different thing to me and not really that comparable. It can be pretty straight forward for the most part if you just want to reach to the end. Meanwhile Amazing Mirror forces you to find all 8 or 9 or 10 (I honestly forgot how many levels there were) stages and beat bosses to retrieve the mirror shards in order to face the final boss.

I don't remember much one-way doors, were they plentiful in Great Cave Offensive? They were kind of annoying, but I recalled them being so far few and between that it wasn't a game breaker. Then again, I guess it helps that the game was rather very short.

I'll make this clear that I don't think the idea of finding/exploring worlds to find new areas inherently a bad idea. I do feel it can be pulled off very well without making things annoying. I just don't agree with Amazing Mirror's execution.

I actually only knew Dimps taking part in development just very recently. I've played the game long before finding out that fact lol

Lemme just say that Dimps' design and I don't get along very well... (Though Dimps can make good games at times like Sonic Advance and Rush Adventure.)

Looks about as I expected. Still hoping we get a 3D trailer on the eShop like we did with Link Between Worlds to showcase how the 3D looks in the game before it comes out. With how well the 3D is done in that I'm almost hoping that Nintendo starts to use it a little bit more to enhance gameplay experiences.

3DS will continue to bleed my wallet dry in 2014 though

Toripuruderakkusu.

I always wonder if Japanese people understand those katakana words or if it's all just sounds to them.

Also Kirby has the angry eyes of US boxart this time!

A surprising amount of Japanese has been replaced by katakana English. That said, a lot of people don't understand the actual English words, just the katakana renditions. I have friends who went to the US and discovered that no one could point them to the nearest makkudonardo for a hanbaagaa.

That works when Westerners ask for Ah-sah-hii beer to go along with their suushii and toe-fu.

To answer the question, kids might not understand the concept, but teens and adults will understand what the words mean, at least in a general sense.

I still can't believe they're using Angry Kirby for the Japanese box art!

Game looks gorgeous, regardless. Digging the backgrounds and colors!

I like most things nintendo. In fact, nintendo is the only reason i still play videogames, because to me Sony, MS and the thrid parties really dropped the ball.

Even so.... i really cant understand why people like Kirby games

I'll buy, play and love this. But can we have a spin-off soon-ish, please? Lately stuff like Mass Attack has been simply amazing and much better than main Kirby games.

Kinda curious about this one, but I dunno. Last "real" Kirby game I liked was Nightmare in Dreamland. The last one was painfully slow.

I just got done recently co-oping Return to dreamland. Anyone know if this will have download play co-op. Would suck to have to buy two copies just for it.

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror has yet to be beaten in the portable department. Still, this looks adorable as always. The box art's not bad, either. :)

If you were frustrated by one-way-doors in Amazing Mirror, you should have looked closer. Doors that are one-way have a different star than ones that exist on both sides. I still hold Amazing Mirror up as the best portable Kirby so far.
