"4real" is an awesome name.
I wish my name were "4real".

Then when people ask me what my name is, I could do this:
daliavatar.jpg

And yell out "...REAL BITCH!"

Btw, as a computer geek, I immediately thought "hmm... human names have the same rules as programming variable names".

Something tells me you're bitter because you had the same idea.

Well, 3real and 5real just sound plain silly.

I don't have a problem with banning stupid names. Should you be allowed to name your child Dickhead or IHateGays or any other ridiculous name that'll impact the kid's life?

Everyone associates high amounts of personal liberty with America and not as much with ex British colonies? Dunno. It wasn't a stab at anything, I just don't know as much about the rules there.
No, Americans associate high amounts of personal liberty with American. Other first-world countries just laugh at them.

They just did it for the obvious pun of someone going; "Are you 4real?" And them answering; "No, but my son is."

Some people take their puns too gosh darn far!

How about helping me out with this exhaustive list of personal liberties we are missing out on.

if by "everyone" you mean "some americans", yeah. otherwise you dunno

Most developed nations offer similar lists of personal freedoms.

(Minus pretending the holocost never happened, and in some cases, defending youself against a criminal.)

It's not that there's an exhaustive list of liberties you're missing out on... legal prostitution, gay rights and the Patriot Act might spring to mind, but that wasn't my point. The point is that quite a lot of Americans think their country is the one shining beacon of freedom in the world. It's not. A ton of other first-world countries differ on tiny things but are basically the same; what's funny is the fine patriotic people like yourself who get so uptight about it.

pretty sure you can't name your child anything you want in America as well... I don't know why people are turning this into something it doesn't need to be..

Well they didn't name him ESPN2 at least!

Wow. Way to make an ass of yourself by speaking about something you have absolutely no knowledge of. I'm definitely not the epitome of a patriotic person. You took it upon yourself to make a slight of my place of residence and I simply asked you to explain yourself.

Same here, I figured it was rejected because the computer wouldn't allow the input, not because the government thought it was a stupid name

The US is one of the countries where you can get away with BS names, remember back when Prince was a symbol?

France, England, Japan all have rules on names. France I think even has laws against "foreign" sounding names. Most countries probably due have rules, it's just idiots that try and test these rules are few and far between.
Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft had issues in JP since his wife and son were born there.

being an adult and changing your name is different than giving one to an unborn child.

What kind of issues did he have? Japan takes almost any names they just won't let you give kanji that means bad things like Akuma or whatever...

He's not particularly wrong in his point (although his execution may be). You cannot deny the irony of Bush claiming that the terrorists are attacking because of America's freedom and the legislation later past that deprives people of certain areas of their privacy and continuing his puppetry show.
The illegal and unconstitutional spying by the NSA, the continual resistance of same-sex marriages the disadvantageous No Student left Behind program and so forth.
These are part of the reasons the US ranked 96th in that recent Peace study (which took into account human rights, corruption, transparency etc).

Many foreign people find it funny, but it's not to say we are any better. We're probably just not big enough to make the worldwide headlines in these areas. NCEA 4real!

But when the parents filed the name with New Zealand's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, they were told names beginning with a number were against the rules.
If it's only names beginning with a number they should call him im4real.

without reading anything but the headline I'm going to guess that this is a dumb highschool couple from a small town who never left after finishing highschool.

I also like it when a government makes a '**** that it's stupid' ruling. yay for sensible governments with real people running shit.

Didn't some parents name their child Turok in order to win a competition that Acclaim was holding?

Now that's hardcore.

Espen itself really isn't a bad name. If they actually did call him ESPN in all caps though then their retarded.

I didnt know black people live in New Z.

20% of the country is black. These folks are half-cast though so they're probably overcompensating.
'We're going to name our next kids 4eva and 4sure' :(

Relax man, just jabbing you. You sarcastically questioned two of us who thought the comment about American liberties was funny, I can only judge you by the posts I see. FWIW I think America's a pretty cool country and every person from there I've actually met has been awesome, but words like patriotism, liberty, freedom, etc are way overused.

It's kind of fuzzy. I think he picked some 5 character kanji rough phoentic equivalent of "ashcraft" but there were complications arriving at that. I think he had to have it approved. I do remember him throwing a hissy fit because his name is 5 characters and most JP places are only set up to take 4 character names?

Should have gone for 'asshat' instead then.

Espen is an ordinary name in Norway. Espen Knutsen, a Norwegian in NHL, was nicknamed ESPN if I remember my transatlantichockeytrivia correctly

Maoris are Austronesian, not black.

Black is used to refer to people of dark skin colour, obviously. As my Oxford dictionary points out: 'relating to a human group having dark-coloured skin'.

More precisely Maori are Polynesian, but thanks for trying to educate me on the indegenious people of my country. Beside that point there's nearly as many Non-Maori Polynesians than there are Maori (Samoan, Rarotongan and Tongan) in NZ.

And the plural form is Maori, not Maoris. No such word exist. Be correct if you're going to try and be informative.

I ****ing hate selfish parents who name their kids stupid ass names like this. It's just... well it's just ****ing selfish! Do these idiotic parents who name their kids these ****ed up names realize their kids have to live with this shit and not them? Yes they do, but they don't CARE! They all need to punched in the face.

In another extreme example. . .

I remember years back in Japan a couple tried to name their child Akuma 悪魔 (Devil). There was a public outrage citing child abuse, and a huge legal battle ensued since the parents went to court to keep the name. Ultimately they changed the child's name to something like Akuma 阿久魔, which are no longer uses the characters for "devil" but is still read as "Akuma". Since, Japanese naming laws have change due to the case.

Germany is also quite strict regarding names. AFAIK it has to be obvious if it's a boy or a girl... I don't mind these regulations - and if I think of some names of celebrities kids I'm rather happy that these would not be possible here. Didn't Frank Zappa call his daughter Moon Unit?

I love my name, it means "God".

nope. Only brown. An african makes a maori look white. I was trying to remember the other day if I had ever seen a black guy in NZ, then I remembered I had, he worked at an accountants firm and had a posh english accent. It didn't fit what tv told me.

Maoris are Austronesian, not black.

**** no. Maoris are New Zealanders and that is it. (I can't explain why that word irks me sorry)

EDIT: lol I didn't know that the plural of maori is maori. (well, now that I think about it I did, but y'know)

Black refers to A human GROUP, not groups. Otherwise it would have been "relating to Human groups having dark colored skin"
