We need a new game ASAP !!

Klonoa is one of those games I've kicked myself for passing up almost every day. It was one of my favorite rentals ever - why didn't I get it?!?

I liked both the PS1 and PS2 versions, but the story in the PS2 one with that emo character... :shakes head:

I must be the only person to prefer Klonoa 2 to the original. Everything felt more professional in the sequel to me.

I like them both but

Klonoa 1 > Klonoa 2

Klonoa 1 is just a fantastic game, glad I picked it up right after it launched. Just great 2.5D platforming gameplay with interesting bosses and levels, with a mix of puzzle solving put in. Story isn't the greatest, but the ending is one of the best endings ever.

I've never played the original Klonoa, heck, the last time I saw it on sale locally was something like a year or so ago, for at or above $30 at a Sam Goody, and I wasn't aware at the time just how rare it actually was. (And it was quite gone the next time I returned.) I was quite happy when Namco announced it as part of that PS1 games collection for PS2 (NamCollection or something), but it's never seen US or even UK release, so a lot of good that did me.

But I really liked Klonoa 2 (shame I didn't buy it before it went rare too, but I was waiting on the promised GCN port, thanks, Namco), and I think I've gotten everything I can in the first GBA one. Still need to pick up the second, and I'll pick up the RPG whenever Namco decides to release it over here. (A recent release list said it's still planned.)

I don't understand the hate aimed at Klonoa 2. I thought it was actually a better game overall. The original left more of an impact, though...

At the risk of sounding troll-ish, I'm honestly curious what has earned the Klonoa series such acclaim in the eyes of its fans. I haven't played the full game, but I remembered playing the demo of Klonoa 1 back when it came out and getting the impression that it was a generic platformer. Based on the praise usually given to the game, it seems I'm way off in that impression. Are there a lot of mechanics or great levels that I didn't get to see (I don't remember area(s) what the demo depicted), or is this just a difference of opinion? This isn't meant as an attack; I'm honestly curious about the game :)

The actual gameplay does really ramp up as the game goes on. It never gets hard, but the creativeness of some of the puzzles and mechanics separate from normal platformers IMO. Also, the level design in the later levels gets better. I do think it's worth hunting down if you've just played the demo, I think it would have a good chance of changing your opinion. Gamespy considers it the 5th best PSone game of all time (I'm not sure I would put it that high, but it would definitely be in my top 10.) Link

The game combines very creative level designs with unique play mechanics. The ability to grab enemies and objects seems so simple...but it results in some fantastic puzzles and exciting gameplay. It isn't just a run of the mill platformer.

In addition to the excellent gameplay, it also features beautiful visuals (in both games) the likes of which haven't really been seen in this type of game before (there have been plenty of 2.5D games by now...but they never use the 3rd dimension as well as Klonoa 1 and 2 did). The music is also quite lovely in both games. Oh, and the original ending is one of the most touching I've ever seen.

Both games are just so incredibly memorable as they do damn near everything right without feeling like a knockoff. Great gaming.

I rented the second game and it was not what I expected it to be. Boring and too damn easy... I guess the first one was the best.

The appeal for me was in the integration of the puzzles and platforming, both of which beame steadiily more complex and interdependent as the games progressed.

This is the main reason I like the console versions better than the GBA Klonoas, which are pretty much entirely puzzles games with relatively weak platforming elements.

And I liked Klonoa 2 more because of the snowboarding stages. Although I do need to redo the original....

I wanted Klonoa to be Sony's mascot :/ buuuuuuuuuut, max 2 games for gen, sony/namco :)

PS: Klonoa 2 IS NOT overrated. *kisses his Klonoa 2 copy*

I thought Klonoa DS was in the works. Can anyone confirm?

Seems like a good fit if true. The series really emphasizes simple mechanics used in creative ways, something at which the DS excels.

And 2.5D has already been shown to look great on the system.
