Kmart out of the video games business?

I went into the Kmart and noticed that there is no longer any video game stuff for sale. No Nintendo 3DS. No Xbox 360. All that is left is one shelf unit with junky stuff on sale.

What used to be the video game aisle is now filled with tablet accessories. I guess this Kmart 3DS Sale - most major titles under $20 each thread in early Dec 2014 was an early indication.

Oh well, not that I ever bought much video games there other than my 3DS XL a few years ago. I usually buy from Amazon or Gamestop. I guess it's just a matter of time before the entire company is out of business.

The store in my town is still doing decent business since it's the only store in town for household goods unless you drive 10 miles to another town.

I noticed the same thing. Only some old left over games that are all on sale. It seems like they're just clearing whatever they have left out.

Been going on for a bit. I have posted a few pics from my local 2. One has a few but the prices aren't quite crazy. I picked up A Link a between world's for 28 last week. I tried to ask for the Nintendo advertising signs but the manager said they had to go back to the Nintendo representative. One store still had PSP games and UDM format movies for PSP. napoleon dynamite and resident evil were 21 bucks still!

Kmart just exists in name only, they merged with Sears in 2004. Since Sears has gotten rid of video games and consoles, Kmart may do the same.

Kinda crazy especially how important Sears was to the early video game industry. I loved those catalogs.

But Sears is dying a slow death and gaming is moving digital.

Kmart around here never seemed to be in the video game business in the first place. Their selection always sucked.

Yeah OP my Kmart no longer carries games, they only have older stock. Kind of sucks because I used to go there early morning to pick up new releases. Should have realized it when they said they weren't getting COD in stock.

The only video game I remember buying from there was FFIX more than a decade ago so it's not a big loss to me

I hate going into Kmarts. There's something wrong with every customer in there it seems. Seriously next time you are in a kmart look around at how many people are disabled or have some kind of injury. it's fucking weird.

But when you go into Kmart, you are one of those people...

Woo, Wolfenstein and Lords of the Fallen both $25.90 on the Kmart website. Going to Target on the way home to price match! (as there is no Kmart within 50 miles of me).

As a teen trying to fumble his way through the wild world of "building positive credit" the first ever card I got was a Sears card, and I immediately maxed out the $500 limit with a Playstation, Resident Evil 2, NBA Live, and Madden.

I was like "So... in order to be a responsible citizen taken seriously by grown-up institutions, I have to buy a Playstation?"

The 90s were fun.

(never missed a payment)

The only game i remember ever buying from Kmart was NHL '95 for N64. Still the best NHL game imo.

Also Kmart is still a thing? the ones in my area all went under months ago.

Used to go there a few years ago just for video games since they had good deals with money back on new releases. Kinda sad to see them get rid of videogames but that department webt to shit anyway.

I went over there a week ago and saw that all of their games were 25% off. Everything good was already taken so I guess no more buying games at Kmart for me.

I stopped into mine before christmas and the entire section was a ghost town with nearly empty racks. Like 1 Wii U game, a stack of copies for two different Xbox titles (I forget which ones), a few Disney Infinity figures, and random console accessories-type junk. I actually thought the store was going to close or something. They are definitely not stocking game stuff anymore.

Good riddance. They haven't had any quality deals outside the 3DS sale (picked up 4 games that day) for months on end. Their price matching is ridiculously stingy as well.

New Games @ Best Buy

Price Matchets @ Wal-Mart

That's how I roll.

EDIT: Lol wait a minute. They had the games at full price in store, but wouldn't price match Kmart.com. I price matched at Walmart!!

Ha, fuck K-Mart.

I agree that the clearance prices are not that good yet. At my store, most things are 25% off their MSRP.

That's a shame. One of my favorite gaming memories was convincing (well, more like "fooling") one of the employees at a K-Mart to sell me Mass Effect more than a week before street date. Good times.

That's sad. I worked for K-Mart back in 2006. I worked in their Electronic department too. I bought a few titles, but I noticed they did not have a lot of sales. I bought more PS2 games that were less than $50. I use to enjoy shopping there when the N64 was out. Who goes to K-Mart anymore? I like the feeling of their store, but they rarely had a selection. Last time they had competition was probably the Spider-Man DLC or an incentive that just appeared out of nowhere. My town has two K-Mart stores. One of their best features was layaway.

I use to put 3 or 4 N64 games on layway and pay $15 installments.

TIL Kmart is still a thing.

ikr

apparently there is 6 left here

Sad but unsurprising. I remember Kmart's push a few years ago to build gamer interests by putting those rewards/coupons on the bottom of a receipt to get money off of a preorder at Kmart. There were actually some solid deals there, and great price mistakes. I mostly buy BestBuy/Amazon now though.

Going into a K-Mart is like stepping into a time machine. I remember a local one still carrying NES games during the Xbox/PS2/NGC era.

I'm about 10-15 miles from a Walmart or Target so the Kmart in my town still is doing decent business. The other Kmarts that had a Walmart or Target nearby were closed some years ago. The issue with my town is that there's no space to put up a big box store. Plus residents tend to be against them. One time Home Depot tried to buy some land to put up a store but there was enough of an outcry that they backed down. I wouldn't mind having a HD nearby.

Kmart was my go to place to get new releases. You could stack the $20 off coupons and get new releases for $40 and then get another $20 coupon.

Yeah, I remember doing that 2-3 years ago. There was some guy on CAG who worked for a company that did promotions for Kmart so he would give advanced notice on these deals. Good times that lasted a short while.

I called Kmart the other day looking for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (which is still sold out *everywhere* except GameStop) and the clerk said, "Yeah we don't carry that anymore, we're getting out of video games and everything we do have is on clearance." So...confirmed?

I wonder if they still have a Little Cseasars operating inside their store? I remember one area where it was was turned into swimwear and outdoor gear. Even when FFXII was out I bought it at midnight at EB Games. They also had a pretty big selection of semi expensive lawn equipment. Walmart doesn't necessarily do that even though they sell quite a bit of agricultural stuff. In terms of games I've always wondered about ShopKoh and Kohls. Both stores were at one time good enough to buy a game. Now they have 3 to 4 year old games still marked at $50 to $60. Their selection typically consists of games I had already purchased.

Anecdotal quip.

West Australia, multi-million dollar new shopping mall opens in January, first 24 hour retail outlet in the entire state (thanks to state regulation exclusions within the shire), it's K-Mart, lots of fan fair on opening, servicing a population of possibly 150 thousand or more and the only game in town, basically in 1000 miles of anything (no shit)

Hugely popular, lots of traffic around the clock. But it has the most pathetic, sparse and largely confusing selection of videogame software and accessories I have ever encountered in my life. No Wii U, 3DS, Vita, XB1 or PS4 hardware but a smattering of launch window PS4/XB1 offerings, all lovingly full priced in a very Australian way (mutha fucking $79 KNACK yo) and get this a surprisingly wide variety of Wii and Wii U third party accessories, don't worry about any awesome games or anything when we have x20 gamepad screen protectors, 5 Wii wheels and 10 Wiimote condoms to NO FUCKING WII U GAMES.

tbh, seems like they were alotted excess stock of complete shit from other stores, why they even have a 'game' section is beyond me. So much potential for midnight pick ups as the various EBs rarely, if ever do them here and yet there game sections is an anemic plastic junk yard at best.

Yeah my local store has some PS4 and Xbox One launch games and that's about it. Sad because they used to break street date a bunch. Got Max Payne 3 a week early from them.

Noticed the same here. They're selling the remaining stock near me with very little new stuff.

It's a shame because a few years ago they had some really good deals. I've bought a dozen games from them in the past 5 years.

I still have a special place in my heart for the K-Mart near my college for breaking street date on Mass Effect 1 by a couple of weeks.

The funniest thing was when the cashier checking me out looked right at the game which had a giant orange sticker saying DO NOT SELL BEFORE NOVEMBER 20 and still sold it to me.

Sadly, they apparently learned because I never found them breaking street date ever again.

I bought Sunset Overdrive from K-Mart a month ago for $20. Didnt know they were going out the video game business. Its time though, theres only one K-Mart in Columbus and its a 30 minute drive away from me.

From my recent experience going there, just burn all of them to the ground.

They've been out of the clean floor business since 1996 it seems. It's all just sadness inside now.
