Kojima says Phantom Pain will be the last 'Metal Gear Solid'

Golden. I love Karl.

I hope it is... but unless Konami can figure out any other significant AAA franchise to make money off of, I don't see it happening. Kojima is too possessive of the IP to let other developers work on a mainline entry. The money guys at Konami are going to sit there like they usually do, with no good ideas besides greenlighting another MGS sequel.

Even if there will not be a VI proper (which I doubt), getting this far into Boss's story and not doing some sort of remake of the NES Metal Gear games would be agonizing. Roy Campbell will convince Kojima to come back for one last mission. I also hope that the MG timeline doesn't end with the events of 4 and Rising. Is MGR even considered cannon? I don't care, I need more, dammit!

In order for him to truly say that this MGS is his last one, Kojima needs to make a public announcement via any event (E3, Gamescom, TGS) and with another person, pass the preverbal torch and say "This person is my successor."

He did that very thing for Rising, and the team and director that took over failed miserably until Platinum stepped in.

And he said he considers this MGS the last since it's his last, there will be more Metal Gear titles.

Can't wait to see the next Metal Gear game from Kojima after this. He has played this tune for over a fucking decade now.

I hope so. This series needs a reboot badly. retcon over retcon over retcon. Honestly after MGS3 I thought this series loop should have ended. Definitely after MGS4. (with a gunshot ending). Still day 1 for sure though.

This is the end for Kojima when it comes to directing MGS games I actually believe him this time, he'll probably co-produce at the very least but it's over.

Might be the last for him but MGS seems to be Konami's bread and butter, they will probably churn out a bunch more regardless of Kojima being involved or not. Hope they start working on some buried IP's like Suikoden. Kojima presents: Suikodens

"In that sense, this will be the final 'Metal Gear Solid,'" Kojima continued. "Even if the 'Metal Gear' franchise continues, this is the last 'Metal Gear.'"

Well have you noticed he's a lot more cautious about it this time ?

He didn't say it's the last MG period
He didn't even say it's his last MG.

He said it's the last game in the Solid saga, which was expected tbh. Solid Snake's story arch is complete, can't go anywhere from mgs4. And it appears Big Boss' will be with MGSV. Nothing left to tell, which I guess means MGSV will tell us the whole thing up to the events in MG1. Full Circle.

Didn't rule out the possibility more metal gear games are coming and didn't rule out directing those.

I've heard this so many times, it's not worth mentioning to my MGS-loving friends.

Man I wish they'd remake MG1 and 2. Especially 1. Release it as a standalone "expansion" (see other thread on front page) later using the same engine. That would be so cool.

Anyway, you know they'll just clone Snake again.

After Silent Hills, I can picture Kojima convincing Konami to let him make a low-budget, 3 hour long "Pilot" of a new IP.

Ground Zeroes and P.T. are probably intended to convince Konami of the format.

Good news no matter what. This doesn't confirm that he won't be making more, but suggests that he isn't saving good ideas or mechanics already thinking of a sequel.

Well, Metal Gear Solid only had 2 games in the series to be quite honest. It's basically a Big Boss series rather than Solid Snake for the most part with a dash of Raiden lol.

Well after he is done with Silent Hills he will most likely do another Metal Gear game..maybe not Metal Gear Solid but I bet he can't just give up his big baby.

Not that I believe this.

But this does make me wonder how much the story of Phantom Pain will cover, as he speaks about the story coming full circle. Sounds great.

As for future entries: I think there are capable studio's that could remake MG1 and especially MG2 with the templates Kojima laid out (maybe with Kojima as advisor or something). Also, I fully expect MGR2 to be announced this or next year after that Platinum troll.

And yeah, clone Snake is always an option without ruining the Kojima canon (no gaf, MGS4 did not do that! ;) ).

Man, I hope "closing the loop" means the end of TPP will be an unwinnable boss fight against Solid Snake. That's my wet dream.

first thought was: yes. zone of the enders 3.

but then I remembered that he always said that. I won't believe you again kojima.

As much as I love MGS, I do hope he moves on to new things. I'm very interested to see what else he could come up with.

Well i think MG1 was a little 'unripe' in many ways, I think the series hit a sweet spot with MG2 (and MGS3) but when you think of it, MG2 and MGS were basically 'remakes' of previous chapters themselves.

What i'd really love to see is the final chapter of MGSV being Outer Heaven and the events of MG1 seen from BB's perspective, with Solid Snake being the final 'boss'.
If this is indeed the last MGS Kojima is doing it would be such a huge missed opportunity not to come full circle.

After that yeah, remake MG1 and 2 (unless MGSV includes some sort of remake of MG1 already which i think is still possible). When you think of it, MG1 is probably not much bigger than GZ, and it could probably be redone using MGSV assets almost entirely.

And while i think you could leave MGS2, 3 and 4 alone, i wouldn't be against a (proper) MGS remake in a few years.
As "games", i think MG2 and MGS3 are the pinnacle in the series, but MGS setting is special to me and PsOne hardware wasn't really up to the task.

I don't think Kojima needs to be involved in remakes, though, i'd much rather have him work on a Snatcher remake when he's done with Silent Hills.

Can we at least get one more young solid snake game with David Hayter? NOT big boss, NOT raiden, just solid snake from the first game on ps1. I don't care if it's a remake of a new one but I just want to play as snake again.

Honestly though, if Kojima ever stepped aside and told Konami "MGS is all you now, do what you want", could you even imaginehow badly they'd fuck it up?

Maybe you'll get to control a young SS in MGSV.

First game to have a game over screen if you win the final bossfight.

Snaaaake! You created a time paradox!

This idea is too amazing to not be in the game.
With Kojima talking about closing the loop and wanting to finally leave MGS why wouldn't he end it that way? He could give the remakes of MG1 and 2 to his team and be done with it.

Ah, i see the idea was mentioned in the thread already.

Yes, it would be a fight you could win,
Big Boss losing to SS wouldn't be a cutscene you can't control.

Which will estabilish that Big Boss wanted SS to win the fight and lost on purpose.

He needs to make a Metal Gear game starring the Boss, I want to see her origin story. Then he can stop with the Metal Gear series, because everything has been told already for this franchise.
