Still looks fucking astounding for a PSP game. That last shot on the rooftops with the sky bloom is pretty amazing. I can't wait to play this!

I'm truly looking forward to Peace Walker, a lot more than to Rising at this point. They'd better show something truly great on Rising at around TGS, because that shameful rushed teaser was not KojiPro worthy.

In the interview Kojima mentions you'll be able to customize your gear, before you start a mission you can choose whether to go in with heavy guns or or stealth weapons.

Not only that, but carrying less weapons will improve your stealth skills.

So...about Peace Walker...

Didn't Kojima say something about Big Boss's beret being backwards in that artwork of him? He was implying that it wasn't even Big Boss, iirc.

Or maybe Big Boss and his soldiers all flip their berets the other way as a sign of rebellion or something. "The Soldiers Without Borders" don't belong to any organized nation. I hope that's all it is. I'm already on the edge of my seat hoping that this Big Boss copy thing isn't gonna spoil the story... :\

That's a good point. Hopefully it'll be a more thought out extension of MGS4's "play however you want" mentality. I personally love sneaking, but I felt that MGS4's huge arsenal of weapons that never ran out of ammo made the job a little easy.

Even a single tranquilizer gun is almost overdoing it if no limitations are put on it. But then again, Metal Gear Solid has always been a different kind of sneaking game. Purer stealth games exist, but that doesn't seem to be what MGS is about.

That's French for "Soldiers without borders," right? Or is it another language?

Is peace Walker still going to be mission based? I really didn't like that too much in Portable Ops... I understand it's there to break up gameplay, but it really turned me off.

That's what it sounds like from the interview.

Yeah, I google Translated it, and that's the vibe I got too...

Oh well, I guess that I will have to get over the fact that it's mission based.

My feelings precisely. I mean Kojima has set this up as a proper MGS3 sequel, consider Portable Ops the "dry run". Rising isn't even on my radar at the moment, it doesnt exist as far as I'm concerned its as much a game as that "Agent" logo flashed up from Rockstar.

I got addicted to grabbing different soldiers in PortableOps and even more addicted to customising my gear in MGO, so I hope theres a middle ground there that will please me! I remember back when KojiPro were suggesting the troop recruiting mechanic might have made it into MGS4. Not quite I guess, so maybe this will be Kojima's earnest effort to do so!

Kojima has said that Rising isn't going to be shown until next years E3.

I bet the guy on the right is Frank Jaeger.

Also, his mask is identical to MGS4's Octocam mask. Weird.

EXACTLY

the octocamo thing might just be KojiPro reusing and downscaling a texture they already had for the sake of the trailer. same idea with the other guys with the mullets. not all the art is done yet, so maybe they used scraps they had lying around.

edit: does anyone else think that Big Boss's eyepatch needs to be moved further to the side of his head? it makes his eyes look kinda close together. :lol

Kojima says at the end of the interview that Rising is going to be MGS reaching a "new level", as in, where the series is going in the future.

The inevitable is not always easy to accept. We shall see, if Konami can pull off a decidedly non MGS like Metal Gear game, I will be extremely impressed.

The latest installment of Kojima Productions' regular podcast has a special treat for Metal Gear fanatics. Hideo Kojima and his staff recently conducted a mock reading of the Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker script, and they're letting us hear a sampling of it! That's right, we get to hear Kojima himself act out a few sequences from his game!

After they've advanced to a certain point with the game's stage creation and tests, they create something called a "Scriptment." This document includes everything about the game, from start to finish -- the dialogue for the story, the gameplay elements, item information, and so forth. Using this script, the team conducts tests on the game in order to fix things like memory issues and bugs, and also makes small adjustments to the story.

The next development step involves pulling out all the drama areas of the Scriptment to get a script. A few members of the game's staff are asked to read this script and share their opinion with Kojima, who looks at the feedback and makes fixes based off it. Next, they have members from outside the team, but within Kojima Productions, read the script. Following this, they have people outside Kojima Productions read the script. This step is dangerous, says Kojima, noting recent cases of movie scripts being leaked onto the internet.

Once the script has been fixed through this process, they have the game's development staff gather to act out the roles. This is another method of polishing the script, as they can determine if words need to be changed around to make things easier to understand or easier to say.

The readers consist of everyone from designers, to writers, to Kojima's secretary, to bigger names like Kojima himself and Shuyo Murata.

Kojima asks that listeners send in comments about who they want to actually play the roles in the final game. Anyone is okay, including stars. Of course, Snake's voice actor is already set.

As you might have probably guessed by the fact that they're already in the final polishing phase of the script, Peace Walker is clearly far along in development. The staff is currently in the casting phase, says Kojima in the podcast, and will soon be bringing voice actors into the studio to start recording.

Do they say whose voice Snake/Big Boss' is set as? I'd personally really miss Hayter if they do get Richard Doyle in to do it. More of my extreme friends have even said No Hayter/No sale! I'd like the 'rules' to be Hayter until white haired, then Doyle voice when elderly.

If that's the case then you probably shouldn't be looking forward to either of them. If Murata is the director of Rising (as many think he will be) then he's also going to write the story. And he's been the co-writer on the series stories since MGS3 (he also wrote The Shocking Conspiracy Behind Shadow Moses for MGS2).

Pretty much.

And besides, wasn't Kojima's idea of taking a back seat creating the scenarios and plots for Metal Gear but passing on the development of the actual game?

I'm pretty sure I read in one of the articles posted here that was what he had originally planned to do for Peace Walker, at least.

Honestly, Metal Gear Solid has always had crazy, overly-complicated narratives. If that's not your thing then I don't know why you'd even bother to pay any attention to the series; I doubt anything will be changing in that regard.

How is the progress on Metal Gear Solid: Rising going?

KOJIMA: We're at an experiment level right now. We're doing a lot of experiments for Rising. But let me give you a hint at what's happening at KJP right now. I said this at GDC, as Kojima Productions, and for the Metal Gear Solid series as well, we always want to go to the next step beyond. And how we go up a step is really a big job actually. But what we're doing right now is making totally new, not just an overhaul, engines and A.I.s and things like that. Even the management and team formations that we have at Kojima Productions, we are changing this around. The core of it is, of course, the Rising team. So they're doing a lot of high-level stuff with great staffs. And that doesn't mean the guys who are making PSP are the shitty staffs...it's not that. However, we have the core team who is doing real high-level experiments and alongside we have the PSP team, which are not really good friends right now, but in Kojima Productions and with Rising that is what's happening right now.

The reason why I say they are not good friends is because the PSP is working day and night to make it even better than MGS4, but of course they can't do it because of a lot of restrictions. On the other hand, the Rising team is using loads of money and loads of capacity and hardware specs. If you could imagine the PSP team looking at the Rising team saying, they have all the money and specs. That's the one reason why they are not good friends.

It's interesting for me to see the team members act in this way. This was never before because it was always just one small team. Now we are much bigger. So it's really interesting for me to watch the team right now.

So there's an internal competition between the two teams?

KOJIMA: Well, we are creating a trailer for PSP like crazy. We give our best and think we did great, it looks great. But when we look at the Rising team we say, should we really keep creating PSP? Because the Rising graphics are so high quality.

Even then being back handed when doing so. I really want to know what's going on over there. I thought it was a GAF conspiracy at first, now, I really believe he's not happy with it for some reason.

Hoping for an epic gameplay trailer from the Rising team for TGS. Or at least something better than that shitty teaser we got for E3. Rising seems like a 2011 game though so not getting my hopes up too much. :/

Yeah that's it.

Dunno if there's a link between this "Militaires sans frontières" and "Médecins sans frontières" which is a humanitarian aid organisation that provides emergency medical assistance to populations in danger in more than 70 countries.

He sounds more envious of Rising than dismissive of it.

I don't know how much you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert)...

It certainly could be that. I could imagine not handling the 'big' game is frustrating, and he can claim PW is a real sequel all he likes, Rising is going to outsell it massively, and if it ends up being the best Metal Gear, his importance will certainly be questioned by pretty much every games journalist. If that's the case though, I don't know why he doesn't just take over the project. He could I imagine.

He'd probably love for that to happen. He definitely doesn't want to remain strapped to the series. And if Rising did turn out better than what he's done, that would be an easy way out for him and would open the door for him to make whatever he wants.

I'd imagine a bigger issue is that he's nervous about how high the quality will be. He's never given up control of the series for a console game before. And if that isn't high quality then he won't have confidence in his team to handle the series on their own. Which would of course lead to him being strapped to it.

He never wanted to let people play as Raiden again after they bitched about him in 2. The goal with Raiden in 4 was to make people go, "Shit, he's cool now?! Now I wanna be him!" and then never give it to them because they cried like big blubbering infants over Sons of Liberty.

Demand for a ninja Raiden game was definitely big right after MGS4, though, so I'd assume the "make a damn ninja Raiden game" order came down from on high.

That could only work out awesome for us, the more MGS the better

This is the best theory I've heard so far. Something like that seems quite plausible, the "lul 360 SKU" argument I hear on the other hand, is moronic.

Absolutely, taking MGS in a new direction, and letting Kojima do whatever the hell he likes is about as much as I could have hoped for after MGS4.

Ugh, Kojima needs to shut the fuck up. We get it Kojima. You are not making your game. It's not "inside" you or whatever that means. You don't have to repeat it at every freakin interview.

It's his studio, he has all the right to repeat himself over and over.

I'm listening to the Koji-Pro podcast and they did just clarify that there is a full single player experience in PW. I know a lot of people never thought otherwise, but there was some discussion about it after GC. So just thought I'd post.
