Konami's X-Men Arcade game - XBLA/PSN, 6 player drop-in/drop-out online multiplayer

X-men is actually one of Konami's weakest beat 'em ups.

Asterix, The Simpsons, TMNT 1 and 2, Crime Fighters 2 (Vendetta), Violent Storm (Crime Fighters 3) and Sunset Riders for example are all MUCH better.

I like your taste and your last couple of suggestions. I hadn't heard of the series. Do you have any thoughts on Irem's(!) Ninja Baseball Bat Man (possibly my favorite of all-time), or any other suggestions for good beat-'em-ups?

I LOVED playing this game back in the day.

It's really a pretty terrible game, though. The fun was in crowding 6 people around that cabinet, I don't think I could see myself playing this online and enjoying it very much. Could be fun local co-op, though.

Somehow, I had no idea X-Men was a Konami title! It's very strange, since I've been plumbing the depths of Konami lore recently... I remember this title from back in the day, and I never thought it was from the same family as TMNT or Simpsons at all...

Not even from the bosses flashing red when they die?

Even if nostalgia plays heavily, I'm sure I can still get 10 bucks worth of fun. Told a couple friends about it today and they were excited too. Some good ol' co-op with them would be awesome.

God bless these downloadble services for giving us this great game. I know it isn't worthy of retail since it's a rather old game but damn, if I didn't put tons of quarter with my friends on this. I always played this on the big 6p cabinet, so awesome.

I was happy when I discovered Metaporphic force a few years back... the cousin of the Xmen Beat 'em Up I never knew existed! Enjoyed going through that with bro, will enjoy going through this, too.

Considering all the links to the "Pryde of the Xmen" animation, and music for this game, I think many have overcome the "Nostalgia" trappings, and just, y'know, wanna play this actual game.

It's evident this game doesn't have the gameplay depth or "fairness" or even things like Streets of Rage 3 or the console Final Fights.. but that was evident even back then. It's quite an enjoyable Beat 'em Up from the early 90s, with some memorable music, voicework, designs, and animations.

It's like we're finally getting something to stand alongside our old TMNT Arcade game on XBLA.

Oh, and on the topic of powers not being exact and such... I remember in one of the Scott Pilgrim Game interviews, they made a comment about how they wanted THAT game to feel like it was a foreign property handed off to a Japanese developer, who didn't ENTIRELY understand the license, and thus, had a few elements that didn't 100% match with the canon... X-men here is a perfext example, eh? I don't mind this personally; It feels like the game designs got to squeeze in a small bit of originality in a game that otherwise is full of stiff rules to follow.

And yes, I'd also love to see the Avengers (The game that made me think Vision was cool!) and Sega's Spiderman arcade games return. I never understood how Submariner and Hawkeye got into that game...

Speaking of beat-em-ups? Are we ever gonna see the Dungeons and Dragons games ported to XBLA or is that a lost cause? =(

I'm tempted to say "lost cause" but this news here has me hopeful for a few reasons:

1.) Recent XBLA and PSN releases like MK2, Mvc2 and Bionic Commando have made serious bank with low cost re-issues. This means there's definitely a market for older games that aren't necessarily "HD" that involve a lot of time redrawing sprites etc. (like SSF2T).

2.) D&D is likely mired in licensing hell, but the Xmen were in the same boat, and are a far more valuable property. (when was the last time there was a successful mainstream D&D anything? the kids cartoon in the 80s?) something tells me D&D can be cleared up with a lot less issues, provided someone bothers to throw some cash at the problem.

Seriously though, I checked them out via MAME a while ago and it's not hyperbole to say those (Especially the 2nd one) were the most advanced games of their era. Ridiculously complex with serious replayability and depth- I like the xmen games but they're not in the same league. They NEED a reissue. Clearly, if gamers make enough noise it can happen.

I wonder if they're gonna use GGPO for network play.

How's Final Fight for PSN/360 on that matter?

The cheap bosses is what I hated the most about the game. If you try to beat the bosses (Save for pyro) with any skill/stragety you are gonna go thru tons of quarters. So whats the alternative? Spam the special move button like a retard. HURRR. Betting most people will play this once maybe twice and never play it again :lol Id rather see a release of the Dungeon and Dragon Games, Alien Vs Predator, Knights of the Round, or Captain Commando. And of course, the best fuking beat em up game (GUARDIAN HEROES)
Bingo.

The game is not good. If it wasnt X-men nobody would give two shits about the game when it came out. Like Orin GA said, the boss fights boil down to how many quarters you have to recharge your powers.. its the side-scrolling fighter equivalent of shmup bombs.

HOPYSHITOHFUCKOHMYGOOOOOODDDDDD!!!

It's been what? Almost 20 years?!! Finally!!! This is awesome news!!

X-X-XXXX-X. X-X-XXXXX!! C'mon.

"Nothing moves the blob!!"

"Pyro will turn you to toast!"

This is what immidiately came to my mind after seeing the announcement :lol

Konami's old tie-in cartoon to the arcade game. Such an awesome title song to the cartoon...

Brown Wolverine > Yellow Wolverine

I loved that cartoon! I never understood why it didn't take off. The quality of animation was ten times that of X-Men TAS.

Brown Wolverine is so much better than neon yellow Wolverine.

:lol Someone else knows the Magfest fun, eh?

Can't wait for it this year. I'm usually with the OCR crowd, taking up a lot of the Jamspace time. Or drinking with a_rival or Shael Riley. Best memory of last years mag was playing with a completely-out-of-his-mind-wasted Shael. Could barely string together a coherent sentence, let alone sing.

I truly believe that cartoon fialed because they fucked up Wolverine's voice so hard.

Soon is this year? I'm curious as if this is a straight port then I would expect it soon. Or shall I just assume next year?

A lot of you guys are gonna be pretty damn disappointed when you actually pick up the game for the first time since you were 13. It doesn't have the same appeal when there aren't precious quarters at stake...pre-2010 inflation, mind you. I still think it's cool that they're re-releasing it though.

That damn machine is just designed to burn quarters. What sucks is that the owner could changes all the options, the special moves were necessary but took lots of life, and some many cheap ass arcade owners turn it down to one life : P

Nobody would care about any of the Konami beat-em-ups if it weren't for the licenses. TMNT and The Simpsons were not much better than X-Men. It's not that they haven't aged well -- they just stink when compared to stuff that Sega and Capcom were doing even at the same time.

Sunset Riders was pretty good but I'd definitely consider it more of a shooter than a beat-em-up.

I remember anytime my friends and I would beat this, it would say "The game is NOT over!" during the ending, leading us all to wonder how many times we had to beat the game for it to end.

We never caught on...

so this is gonna be based on the US quarter-munching version and not the Japanese version that's designed to actually be possible to single credit clear, right? Konami was so lame with that garbage.

edit: It looks like it has to be, since it's six player. Big 'ol pass.

Or maybe they will give you the coin op options. Who knows. Time to man up and beat it like us men
or kids who live in their parents basements
in the states!

Not me. When the game was a few years old a local arcade gave you 8 lives for a quarter and I went through it a bunch of times (I also beat it at 50 cents for 2 lives way back when). Nowadays a local nickel arcade has it on free play and I usually play through it when I'm there. It's good mindless fun, and god damn do I love the voice clips.

You mean including multiple regions of the game? That'd be nice. There's no setting in the US version to make it line up with the JP one.

Either way, this port will undoubtedly let you simulate being a rich kid with infinite quarters who buys his way around challenges made to be bought around. No worries there! I'd just like the more videogamey one.

This topic demonstrates that we need a beat-'em-up debate topic. Were the Final Fight/Streets Of Rage games good? Has 90% of NeoGAF only played those based on properties they like? Do some require genuine skill? Which one's the best? Why do British people call fighting games "beat-'em-ups," too?

I'd like to gauge NeoGAF's opinions and experiences.

Streets of Rage 2 is competent, pretty, and sounds great, but if you ask me to compare it to Final Fight? It's a bloated Final Fight for less skilled players. Final Fight is a very good game.

Do some require genuine skill?

Absolutely. Especially the Japanese arcade ones. The Capcom arcade beat 'em ups are some of the greatest skill-based action games ever made. Far more so than stuff like DMC and Ninja Gaiden Black.

I used to consider the genre pretty dumb overall. That's a pretty common view, I think.

Which one's the best?

I'd have to actually 1cc a couple more before I could answer that.

Why do British people call fighting games "beat-'em-ups," too?

that's weird.

They already confirmed that the Japanese Version will also be an option in the game, untranslated text and powerup orbs and everything.
