Konami's X-Men Arcade game - XBLA/PSN, 6 player drop-in/drop-out online multiplayer

ALL OVER MY FUCKING FACE!!!!!!!

Best news I've heard all day.

That 6-player has me already with money in hand ready to double dip. Come get this money.

Game companies need to pay attention to this movement if they haven't. A small investment in the right throwback game nets big profit.

This has me in a place where I can see a lot more games that need XBLA and PSN to finally come around to the people who love and appreciate them. I have a list a mile long and I think I can start checking games off the list now.

This topic demonstrates that we need a beat-'em-up debate topic. Were the Final Fight/Streets Of Rage games good? Has 90% of NeoGAF only played those based on properties they like? Do some require genuine skill? Which one's the best? Why do British people call fighting games "beat-'em-ups," too?

I'd like to gauge NeoGAF's opinions and experiences.

I think you should do it. I have my personal picks and would to see how all of GAF feels on the subject at large.

I loved this game back in the day, but like pretty much all of the old school beat'em ups, it has NOT aged well at all.

I don't know if I would say it hasn't "aged well". It's become less relevant, perhaps? The gameplay is still as fun as it ever was, but the fun of these beat-em-ups largely came from beating them on a quarter or playing with friends; take them home and they lose a lot of that appeal. However, put them online and/or build leaderboards or other bonuses in, and they're at least partly back to being a good half-hour of mindless fun no matter how many times you've played through all the levels.

OMFG!!!!!! I have posted COUNTLESS time how much I would love to have this game!!!! Man I couldn't be any more fucking excited right now!!!!!!! :D

After Turtles in Time, I`m sort of in the camp that the genre has passed me by. Funny, because I played the shit out of Turtles 89 a few years ago and was amped up for more.

Good music really makes a beat em up: Turtles in Time on SNES, Streets of Rage series on Genesis.

Turtles in Time remake on XBLA/PSN had SHIT music.

Seriously, we need Simpsons Arcade.

Of the trifecta of Konami's 3 classic licensed beat-em-ups (TMNT, X-MEN, Simpsons), it's by far the best one.

i want Battle Circuit ...but i know that capcom will never give it to me =(

It's been high time for Battle Circuit to get released. Not enough people know about the game and the ones that do don't get the word out like they should. The perfect scenario for a Battle Circuit release would one or both of the following. Capcom does another Double Impact game but has Captain Commando as the lead off with Battle Circuit as the 2nd game. GGPO + Battle Circuit = DAT SEX. Or Capcom takes the damn hint and throws Cyber Blue in an upcoming crossover game to get people wondering about the origins of the character. Similar to Saki in TvC. But also AvP and D&D are games that need to be sorted out and released at some point as well.

Hah, maybe that's it. I still remember the Turtles 89 music anyway.

Oh, I did back in the arcade and as recently as a few years ago. But at least that has the pseudo depth of an RPG. It's why I bought the Magic Sword release earlier in the year (I heard it came with this game called "Final Fight"? Why would anyone want that? :p).

I like your taste and your last couple of suggestions. I hadn't heard of the series. Do you have any thoughts on Irem's(!) Ninja Baseball Bat Man (possibly my favorite of all-time), or any other suggestions for good beat-'em-ups?

I've never played Ninja Baseball Bat Man to be honest, I'll give it a try sometime.

Some good (but obvious) Capcom ones:

Final Fight
Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom
Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara
Knights of the Round
The Punisher
Alien VS Predator

Yes!! another classic beat em up I'll play for five minutes and go, "Yup.. that's one of those games." and then never play it again.

Pretty much. A cheap way to milk nostalgics. It's not even HD.

Won't be touching this, at all.

TMNT 89 was great because at $5, I never regretted blowing through the campaign in one co-op run and then occasionally pulling it out after some late night drinking sessions.

Hard to justify much more for button mashers.

I would kill for a home version of WWF Wrestlefest though.

Never played X-Men Arcade before but I'm getting this day one, I loved the old Konami beat-em-ups.

Now all we need is The Simpsons and Sunsetriders.

Sunset Riders was my game. I remember the game for the stupid stuff, namely the dialog from the Boss battles.

"Bury me with my money!!!"

X-Men: the Arcade game is going to be fun. I'm just geek that I can no longer use quarters/tokens to beat the game. Will there be 4 player offline and 6 players online co-op?

Tell me more about this Japanese version.

All I know of it, I learned from this source: http://uk.ign.com/videos/2010/10/09/x-men-arcade-video-preview?objectid=88646

Konami has included a clever twist on the conventional port by adding the option to switch over to the Japanese version of the game. Much is the same here (aside from Japanese text during cutscenes), but enemies will drop health and power items, which greatly alter the challenge of the game. Characters will also not lose health immediately when using their powers – power "orbs" are used first, then the health is drained. The reverse is true for the U.S. version, which used the orbs only after a player was low on health. The Japanese version makes a bit more sense, but again, it's a far easier game – particularly against the bosses.

I love beat em ups. Its about time they make a return and XBLA/PSN are the perfect services for them to be revived. I would lose my shit if Capcom made new CPS2-CPS3 beat em ups or Konami made new beat em ups based off their arcade engine that they used for TMNT, X-Men, Simpsons, Crime Fighters etc. Speaking of Konami beat em ups, I LOVED this game.

This game definitely hasn't held up that well, and considering how much I'm struggling to get three other people to play Scott Pilgrim with me, I'm sure I'll never end up playing this how it's meant to be played. But still, I am more than willing to be welcomed to die again.

Best gen ever CONFIRMED!!:D Seriously. I probably spent over $200 on this game back in the day.

Day 1 for me. And I'll most likely double dip, which is rare for me. I've been waiting for this release for years.

Goddammit, I have waited my entire LIFE for this release.

I hate them for waiting so long to port this; this belonged to the SNES/Genesis era and now instead of being a watershed release - the kind of thing I'd have run paper routes for in 1993 - now it's one of a jillion things I'm going to throw $10 - 15 at on PSN for quietly in 2010/2011.

...but thank God they actually, finally ported this game. I will be there day fucking one.

People hoping for The Simpsons might be a little disappointed. I had an opportunity to play through the game on a cab last year and I was very surprised at just how bad the game is. Something isn't quite right about the hit-stun so the game ends up being an enormous quarter muncher.

It just doesn't compare to the superior offerings from that age; Turtles in Time, even TMNT The Arcade Game, Shadows over Mystara, Knights of the Round, even stuff like Captain Commando.

Cheap bosses?

There is a way to beat all the bosses without just blasting through supers in this game.

This trick works for most other beat em up bosses too.

I loved this game, mostly for the music.

Cyclops was pretty bad and Colossus wasn't much better. Those two characters were probably the only ones I would need more than one credit to get to the end, if I was playing solo. The game was easy to beat within a single life, if I was playing with someone else who was also good.

Storm was the only character that I could solo all the way to the end without losing a life. She was by far the best character, although I did like Dazzler more.

Hmm, there are better beat 'em ups out there but only the licensed ones get this kind of attention.

Well, I guess the first two of these are licensed as well, but anybody that freaks out over The Simpsons, TMNT or X-Men would have their minds blown away by Tower of Doom, Shadow of Mystara and Battle Circuit.

Yeah I agree with these posts, but I guess part of the fun is having people to play with that are enthusiastic about the game, and X-Men/The Simpsons definitely have some enthusiastic fans. Too bad those other games get overlooked though.

I've played the other fighters/beat-em-ups listed, but none of the others had 6 player co-op.

Capcom's Dungeons and Dragons arcade games were cool and was possibly better in every way that most people care about (arguably with the exception of the music, the licensed property, and the number of players), but I also didn't spend hours playing those games like I did with X-men.

I also never got into Konami's other beat-em-ups.

Has NeoGAF's online forum ever done MAME meetups for beat-'em-ups?

online co op is pretty useless for this... the whole point is to get a group of buddies together and mash !

It's really a pretty terrible game, though. The fun was in crowding 6 people around that cabinet, I don't think I could see myself playing this online and enjoying it very much. Could be fun local co-op, though.

What about those of us, whose buddies have long since moved away, but could easily see us coordinating a get-together over PSN/Live to play this game together "just like old times"? :lol

What I really hope to see is adequate usage of mixing online drop-in/drop-out, but also allow a possible fellow couch-sitter to join in at any time. That'd be nice. Especially if it's all on GGPO.

The friends I played this with are now either dead or in jail. It's insensitive and a smack in the face to those who lost their lives for Konami to re-release this.

Trophies!!

like most beat'em ups you will probably play it for 5 minutes before getting bored and then get all sad because you aren't 10 years old anymore. Hell I remember even as a kid passing up the Xmen machine once the novelty of the giant screen, huge colorful sprites and 6 player action wore off. Even then I found the gameplay was pretty crap in comparison to Capcom's stuff.

bosses weren't cheap in the game, you just had to get their pattern of attack down (the blob, wendigo, juggernaut, that big robot) and you could beat them without using your special.
