Bulgogi and Kimchi.

If you're going to get Kimchi get it fresh. I hate old kimchi, it gets really sour and stinky >.>

It's perfect for making Kimchi jjigae.

Also, more noodle dishes.

Seolleongtang. The milky white beef broth is glorious.

Just about all of it? I still can't get passed the internal organs/intestines thing with some dishes, though.

i dont know how it fits in with the rest of the recommendations in this thread (real korean places dont seem to serve it, and places that serve it seem to serve little else) but korean fried chicken is the best kind of fried chicken. in this new yorkers opinion at least.

I agree with this. Koreans can't seem to get any Western food right except fried chicken, but it's a gawd-damned slam dunk. The variety of flavors is amazing, too.

If any of you guys who travel to Korea make your way to Gwangju for whatever reason, hit up the fried chicken places near Chonnam National University. They're incredible.

Neat. Other than being really good in general, is there anything distinctively Korean that'd set it apart from what you'd expect to get in the US, say?

Besides the fat being mostly removed, the variety of flavors. I was partial to the sweet garlic type myself.

EDIT: Here's a NY Times article on it.

I've only had fast food type fried chicken in Korean and the quality of chicken was below (US) average as well as very greasey (not a bad thing). Though after months of eating Kimchi and various fermented veggies the fried chicken tasted like God fried it.

The korean's have some secret sauce they marinate their meat with, I love the bbq chicken / beef from korean restaurants. Wish I knew where to buy it. The sweet sauce on their potatoes are really good too. And of course the stone bowl rice dishes with egg, kimchi, etc.

Here's a great website that has a typical menu from a Korean Kimbap restaurant and a description of every item on the menu.

http://maryeats.com/2006/11/16/kimbap-nara-menu/

I used this when I first arrived in Korea, was quite helpful.

My favorite is 제육덮밥. Would eat this every day for lunch before heading into work, my local place was soooo good and gave me a shitload of sides and delicious kimchi for 3,500 won.

I also like bulgogi and dalk galbi.

I lived in Korea for a month, and on more than a few occasions would get two rolls of tuna kimbap as a light dinner washed down with a 2L Hite.

Oh, +2 Ja jang myeon. That shit is delicious.

Yes. The stew is boiling hot. The egg is put in last because it tends to burn.

cool. a lot of the food here looks great, its weird that i havent had any

Another +1 for Jajangmyeon and also...

Bibim Naengmyeon. Stuff can be fiendishly spicy but it's great.

Also regular Naengmyeon is really nice on hot days.

And Tangsooyook!

It's pork with sweet sauce, and usually pineapples, apple, cucumber etc mixed in. So sweet and so good when it's done right. Like Jajangmyeon this is Korean style Chinese food.

I really need to visit Korea. All this food looks awesome!

love Kimchi, actually most fermented/pickled asian dishes are delicious.

Nattou/kimchi/plah rah...

There's a pretty good Korean restaurant I go to in ellicott city that I've gone to several times now. I typically get the Kalbi but the bulgogi, sundubu, and jukumi bokuem (baby octopus noodle dish) are all great. The kimchi is pretty good, too.

Can't forget Kimchi Bok Eom Bap either. This photo is one I made myself, it's so easy and tastes amazing. I find myself adding a lot of kimchi and a lot of the juice from the kimchi container in so it usually has a really vivid red colour and packs a bit of spice.

what

enlighten me

Most Asian beers that I've had are terrible.

You need to drink some Hitachino Nest. Not Korean, but epic.

And one more vote for bebimbap. And whatever those Korean seafood pancakes are.

my favorite is Cass and Hite.....

it's hard to find around where I live. only the few Korean restaurants around here serve it. not even the korean grocery stores around here sell it. So it's like a rare treat for me, but definitely delicious.

Yes to these two. 2 of my most favorite dishes with Kalbi and Bulgogi. Though I must say Jajangmyun is by far my favorite food ever. I can eat it every day and never be sick of it.

I love being Korean :) We have awesome food.

Must try this. Where is it from?

Edit: Cass is good. Makes hair look good.

Japan. They have a few different kinds. My favorite are red rice and white rice. The imperial stout is epic too. Expensive as shit tho. Worth it.

Dduk bokki. Holy shit it's amazing. It's like... vegetarian hot wings. Only way I can think to describe it. It's especially good when it's fried so the outside is crispy. It is basically fried rice dumplings covered in hot sauce.

QY47p.jpg

It doesn't LOOK super appetizing, but it is.

Other people hit the usual Bibimbap, Kalbi, Bulgogi, Kimchi stuff, so I wanted to enlighten you to this. I could eat dduk bokki every day I think.

The best part of dukbokki is that whole boiled egg they sometimes toss in there. I dunno why, but it's the part I appreciate the most.

when your mouth is burning raw, the egg is like some magical addition. it doesn't soothe the heat or anything, it's just totally different from eating egg at other times.

I always end up eating the egg first. Habit I guess. Gotta wash it down with soju and/or beer. I feel like duk bokki is the perfect college food in so many ways, and which I had a clue about it back then when I could eat like a moron all of the time.

I will find a way to import this.

WAT. Cass is acceptable, but Hite is pure cat piss. It's the worst beer I've ever tasted this side of Milwaukee's Best (which remains the undisputed champ of awful-tasting beer.)

Anyway, if you want Korean alcohol, never go for their beers. Try makgeolli or the different varieties of yakju.

EDIT: On food, another vote for ddeokkbokgi. It works well on its own or as a banchan to a full meal.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

People please post pictures.

Lol you sound so desperate. If you ever move down south you can come over for some real Korean food =P

also this "fresh" kimchi some of you are hyping is so so wrong. Kimchi is supposed to be old so it ferments! I hate it when its fresh and still has that cabbage flavor.

Oh yeah? I hate it when it's rotten and has a...rotten flavor!

There is a fine, fine line with Kimchi. That perfect time frame when its just perfectly fermented. I love it. I too hate "rotten" kimchi. Restaurants almost NEVER have it right. I hate restaurant kimchi.

I like my Kimchi juuuuuust right.....lol

but real talk, love the stuff but goddam, my asthma and GERD kick the ever living shit out of me after I eat it.....it's worth it though.

Jajangmyun, like other people have said. I had some packaged variation on it called Chapaghetti. Sure I'm spelling that wrong.

Any time I go to the Korean restaurant in the Pal Do World near my house, I always get something that has a fried egg on top and has a bunch of meat and vegetables. Don't know the name, but I like it. They also serve all these little sides, and I think one is tentacles of some sort. They're really chewy, but I like them.
