Korean Girls Try to Open Their Eyes

Yeah, the light skin envy exists in pretty much every culture, it just disappeared from ours in the last century or so. It's due to how people from a higher class have a lighter skin than peasants, due to them not working outside in the field all day long. Nowadays in western cultures being tan means that you are out there vacationing with your money, instead of working your ass off in the factory.

This also exists. I remember Lupita Nyong'o talking about a letter she'd received from a young African girl who wanted to use skin-lightening cream until she had inspired her and made her realized that dark black skin is beautiful too. :/ (I also remember the neogaf thread where people freaked the fuck out over Lupita winning "Most Beautiful Woman" in People Magazine one year. Fuck those people doe.)

Yeah I suppose theres the starvation, awful living conditions, absolute misery of being stuck in a communist shithole etc. But lets not forget that Korea has only been separated for about 60 years, so it's still pretty amazing to see how different the two countries look, and not just their people.

I hope this isn't construed as racist or anything but I don't think I ever noticed how much their eyes contribute to the way look. Certain parts during the video when they had their eyes wide open they looked less Asian, it was odd.

Are you sure about that? I was watching a Vice video about cosmetic surgery in South Korea. The women they spoke to specifically said they were getting work done to have features like the interviewer (white lady). Even the surgeon referenced the interviewer's features in reference to what the women who came to him wanted.

Vice did a bit on S.K's plastic surgery scene. The reporter was asked if she thought a girl looked like her, and she said no. She later found out she devastated the girl because she wanted to come across as having western eyes.

At some point, as the generations role on. It's just girls emulating other S.K beauty standards. But the fascination with western appearances certainly crept in with an influx of western media.
 
Ok ok I have to know, Asians seem to have narrower eyes- but does it actually affect their vision?

I heard some Chinese parents had a mild surgery done on their infants tounge to make it easier for them to speak English words- Is this real? Are people cutting off the parts of the body that make them less 'western'??

Yes, they want bigger looking eyes by doing the double eyelid operation, and westerners have them. The bigger eyes gives them a more energetic, adorable look. Looking like a westerner doesn't even enter the equation. Can you find a couple korean wanting to look like a westerner, sure thing. But it is a tremendous leap to go from that and saying that korean girls want to look western. Nobody really gives a shit.

You're making it sound like I'm saying Korean woman want to look like Westerns in general which I'm not saying at all. However, I really don't think it's a tremendous leap to say that Korean women get plastic surgery to acquire Western features.

The doctor in the clip I linked is saying that the woman who come to him specifically want to get Western features. So I'm not taking any leaps here, I'm just going by what the women in the video and the doctor said.

Hell, even the women in OP's video are equating having larger and rounder eyes to Westerners.
