Kotaku: Diablo III vs. Torchlight II

The only thing that makes me laugh more than developers claiming their games won't have an optimal skill path, is people actually believing it.

At this point D3 is a different game than D2. TL2 just sounds like a shittier version of D2.

Honestly, I'd just rather not compare them. I know it's a futile request, similar genres and all that. But, really, they're different games. The only thing I care about is how much better TL2 is than TL1.

Some expect the game to get better at later levels and with nightmare which requires a lot of time get to and then you realize it's not really any better and the itemisation still sucks ass and you either use a lot of time or RMAH.

The RMAH isn't required at all and most the best gear is probably found on the Gold AH, not the RMAH.

Granted, we can argue about how well an itemization difficulty progression path (rather than the "I want to kill shit faster" itemization path) worked for a loot game. They're shifting towards the latter but I do wonder just how better received D3 would've been with that at the start rather than now (well, soon).

Is Torchlight 2 multiplayer co-op only or do they offer PVP as well? I guess hacks and mods don't matter that much in Co-op unless you are interested in trading (you can choose to play without them along with other like-minded individuals). However, I remember Diablo 1 PVP and it was absolutely broken by hackers.

Regarding the quality of both games, it seems that even people here are comparing a few hours of Torchlight 2 beta gameplay to the dozens/hundreds of hours they poured into D3 before becoming completely sick of it. The real test will be how well the game holds up after 50-100 hours. I really liked Torchlight 1, but had no desire to play it again after about 20 hours. Maybe this game will be different. Maybe not. It's too early to tell.

Anyway, three years from now Diablo III will still be relevant and being supported. TL2 will be a barren wasteland like the d2 open servers because the developers were too cheap (though I suppose they can add this in).

D3 was already irrelevant after 3 months.

Even better. I don't need servers (read: DRM (that ultimately didn't work)) if I want to play solo.

Playing these games without people is like browsing GAF at 50 ppp. But you probably know what that's like.

D3 was already irrelevant after 3 months.

Really? Because there's probably more people that have logged on in the past week than will buy TL2 all together.

I've probably put 1000 hours into TQ/Sacred 1 and 2/Fate 1 and 2/Torchlight. Not to mention the hundreds of hours I played D2.

I just think I am tapped out on the genre. I doubt there is anything more to 'excite' me in the same way.

Do you have a dog?

Did it get run over by Runic?

Way to inadvertently admit that you have no idea why Blizzard designed Battle.net the way they did.

Obviously their goal is to maximize profits at any cost. You're kidding yourself if you think anything else. And their DRM didn't even work. Accounts were still compromised and items were still duped. Legendary fail.

Yes.

No. But Kotaku says this game has pets and D3 doesn't, so I guess it would be a decent marketing campaign.

I don't think anyone hated Blizzard until they brought the Cataclysm upon themselves and followed it up with D3.

Considering all the shitty games Blizzard has made it's a wonder no developer can top any of them. The industry is really in shambles.

Unreleased to the general public, yes.

Press copies have been out for a few days.

Ha, didn't know that, thanks. Doesn't change much though.

Besides, I wonder how long they've played TL2 to pass that kind of judgment. Many issues in D3 aren't apparent until you reach hell or even inferno, like the skill tree thing. I'm sure TL2 will be an improvement over TL1 (which I enjoyed), but TL1 was completely broken and way too easy. I'll wait and see what people have to say once they've played the game for several tens of hours.

I don't play WoW, but Cataclysm was a bad thing? (serious question)

I liked it.

But then again, I only started playing WoW during Cata, so no way for me to compare to previous expansions when they were relevant.

edit- D3 however...

Imagine getting served a super awesome appetizer and main course, followed by a dessert which makes you throw up for a month and gives you diarrhea which makes your asshole bleed and leak puss for another month.

yea.

meh, i'll end up playign TL 2 when it goes on steam sale, but the first one didn't keep me occupied very long, even with all its similarities to Diablo

I don't play WoW, but Cataclysm was a bad thing? (serious question)

It's the first games where sales dropped... Lots of tacticts such as free 80 coming back, new recruit a friend mounts, etc to get players back... Still dropping.

Cataclysm was horrible. 25 mans are pretty much dead. 10 man content is to easy.

ICC was better artistically, better designed bosses, and 3x as long. (Heroic was exponentially better) No Ruby Sanctum tied you over until the expansion...

Less raids, less heroics...what you have is lower quality. It really hurt the wow is Unstoppable image. Sure it's "OK", it's just way to little to long.

Cataclysm is no GW2, hoping MOP brings back the WOW to World of Warcraft.

Actually, that game does look completely awesome.

I played that, couldn't get into it mainly because:

1/ camera is situated in a weird position. the angle and the distance from the character feel wrong.
2/ combat for the first hour or two was clunky and slow.

Will get back to it in another few months or so.

Cataclysm is way better than GW2 still.

This is the part where people pretend TL2 is better than D3 and ignore problems it has because it's from the smaller dev and people want to put it to the man, right?

Just like GW2 and WoW.

We'll see what games still being played 3 years from now.

I hate posts like this. It adds nothing to the discussion.

Anyhow, the beta was great and I am expecting good things from the full version.

edit: Good God, look what this thread has evolved to.

I was just trying to make a post with as much integrity as the article. Sorry if you were offended.

I remember when I was a kid and thought that if a company was bigger then obviously their product must be better.

Then you grew up and realized the world is a cruel place and started subconsciously personifying Blizzard as the man, and Runic as yourself?

The most important thing:

Diablo III: Want loot? Buy it! | Torchlight II: Want loot? Play the game!

So, where does the loot your buying come from in the first place?

And it's more like TLII: Want Loot? Edit your game files because there's no semblance of an economy anyway.

So what's the end game in TL2? Since there's no reason to go find loot...which is strange since it's a loot game.

What's the end game in D3? The loot itself isn't even worthy of being called an end game. Who doesn't love scrounging for generic rares praying that the RNG on top of RNG on top of RNG all hit?

I think Diablo 3 is probably a great game for a lot of folks but I played the trial and it didnt click with me.

I got into Torchlight 2's beta after that and for whatever reason I absolutely loved it to death.

Finding loot, paragon levels, soon to be PvP/ubers.

What would be a good reason to find loot?

trading. needing to gear up a character.

neither of which exist because you can just edit your gear.

So what's the end game in TL2? Since there's no reason to go find loot...which is strange since it's a loot game.

So because you have the ability to edit stats/items that means everyone is going to do it? You're being fairly ridiculous.

Neither game has an "end-game". The concept of an end-game in a non-MMO is ridiculous.

I don't see what's wrong with buying the game, playing it until you're satisfied, and moving on to whatever one of the 100 games you have on your Steam account that you haven't played yet.

Why does Diablo III or Torchlight 2 have to offer thousands of hours of gameplay? What's wrong with 100?

So because you have the ability to edit stats/items that means everyone is going to do it? You're being fairly ridiculous.

I think it's more a question of "why find loot if there's nothing to use it on."

Edit: Actually, going back and reading posts, nevermind! I guess that would be my question: What's the "sweet, something for my epic lewtz" for TL2 :x

Everyone (almost) on my Steam list is playing BL2. I feel so left out :(

I forgot to pre-order Borderlands 2 and just bought it now.

And then I remembered I'm still at work.

This was a dumb idea.

So because you have the ability to edit stats/items that means everyone is going to do it? You're being fairly ridiculous.
So, because the option to spend real money to buy the best gear available means everyone is going to do it?

It's a silly argument on both sides.

So because you have the ability to edit stats/items that means everyone is going to do it? You're being fairly ridiculous.

I take it you never played on open d2.

It's impossible to have any sort of trading economy when people have the ability to edit items.
