Kotaku: How Video Game Breasts Are Made (And Why They Can Go Wrong)

I've never understood the point of giant, jumbling meat balloons in video games. I've never found it attractive, just weird. Like, it draws too much attention to itself and doesn't look realistic.

Video game butts deserve more love and those things actually jiggle. Male and female butt jiggles for all.

that's just you tho..

also capcom led the way in #HOMETOWN but...alas tis capcom

EDIT:

i skimmed most of the article, but did Patricia point to any positive or well-made breast physics in games? or was it all "most breast physics are bad due to technical or creative issues. do better"

Well animated bodies are definitely something I want to see improve this generation. After that, can we please tackle games with armor and make it so armor actually sits on the body and doesn't bend and stretch like it's made out of meat? That'd be great.
I would like that as well but I don't think that's a realistic expectation.

Even regular shirts in FIFA are still glued to the body and deform with it. I would assume just a single layer of cloth that uses regular old cloth physics is easier to do than static armor that is made of many materials all with different physical properties.
Not that FIFA is supposed to be the innovator, but my expectation are that until the former technique is common place you won't see more advanced things in other titles.

If modders applied themselves, I figure Skyrim HDT could lead to the creation of whips, flails, and so on. It'd use the physics to create some convincing effects and mix things up beyond one-handed or two-handed combat.

But uh...yep.

I don't understand people's obsession with realistic looking breasts and realistic breast physics in a video game when that element of the games they tend to be a part of are not meant to be realistic, but to be arousing.

Actually, it was pretty interesting as an article. Bouncing boobs is something that indeed, people notice in games, for good or bad.

Done correctly, it adds a layer of realism. Don't absurdly, it can be rather distracting. A good animator has to find that balance.

Same with say, hair physics, or cloth physics.

Haha! Sure! Kotaku posts an article about breasts and gets 2 pages on GAF but this quality article examining how Madden ratings (and by extension sports games in general) are determined gets nothing.

And people wonder why gaming journalism sucks.

Love how they pretend there's no examples for animators to see to model them realistically. It would take all of 10 seconds to view thousands of results.

And video game developers need to stop hiring teenage boys to design characters
Shameful honestly, it's like the industry is committed to a frat-boy image
At least there is hope in the indie scene

More like God punish Japan for going over the line honestly...

oh won't someone think of the enlightened superior gamers who only like "tasteful" imagery.

cause once you leave teenage years, you stop liking cleavage or sexually arousing imagery.

they should only hire "mature" developers who make "mature" imagery. So people wouldn't have to resort to lowly indie games to get their fix of drab imagery.

You know reading that article and other places mentioning Jill's jiggle physics in REmake being added make me sad. It was actually already there on the gamecube version. It bums me out because this many people not knowing about implies that not enough of these people played/bought the game the first time and attributing to it's initial poor sales. It is blatantly obvious with the chest high camera angles :(.

Also ass physics that would make Prison School proud. I remember I actually first saw ass physics in the first Soul Calibur. But dat Zero Suit costume in Fatal Frame 4. The person made a whole bunch of vids on this, so enjoy or point and laugh.

Really using that image out of context there bud. ._.

I am Hyoudou Issei and this is my favorite article on Kotaku!

The obvious solution is for the animators to study breasts and how the move. They have the tools to help them animate them but anatomy is always the basic answer.
