KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

I have a vertical light blue line towards the farthest left on the screen... I feel as if it's supposed to be blacked out... It's semi-distracting but more concerning is the possibility of ongoing screen issues...

Anyone have this problem?

Try gently tapping it. I've seen this happen more than once and it was due to a flat cable not properly positioned.

Where exactly? back? front? middle?

I'm worried this is the beginning of more issues.

Thanks in advance

edit- tapped, squeezed, caressed the entire side... nothing worked.

Hey guys so I had Dynamic Contrast set to high for a week or so and while I thought it looked good for Netflix and playing games. I decided to do a calibration through the Xbox One S. I came up with literally having everything off, is that acceptable? I mean it doesn't look too bad, looks natural, possibly let my eyes adjust for a week or so? Wasn't sure if I should have at least something on like Smart LED to low and I keep it on high for HDR content...

I'm running...

Backlight- 12
Brightness- 48
Contrast- 99
Sharpness- 0
Color- 50 (Didn't have glasses to calibrate this; kept at default)
Digital Clean View- Off
Auto Motion Plus- Off
Smart LED- Off
Dynamic Contrast- Off
Color Tone- Warm 1
Gamma- 0

This is for standard content like watching Netflix in 4K and the rest in HD by the way. Just debating if I should maybe turn up Gamma or raising Dynamic Contrast, but I didn't because I know it'll throw off the calibration I did on the Xbox...

Turned HDR off on Xbox and it still flickers. Playing a 4K bluray or game with HDR and the flicker stops. Makes no sense. Don't know if a more expensive HDMI cable would matter.

Doesn't have to be expensive, just the correct one. But I wouldn't want to send you off buying something if it that's not the actual issue. Maybe someone else will chime in.

RE: Sharpness

Actually, now that I look at it again, setting Sharpness to "10" does seem to add some banding to the XMB icons on PS4 Pro. I really don't think it used to be like that at all previously. It's also doesn't seem like that great of a way to check for this any longer, because the icons now pulse and animate on the latest PS4 firmware. Will have to check it out on Disney WoW.

I was reading on AVS that the latest firmware may have changed the way the TV does its filtering, which may be why people have been saying the picture quality has improved in the latest update. It may have also changed the way Sharpness settings affect the display?

If you've calibrated or played with your Sharpness, it may be time to revisit it on the latest firmware.

Does the Hulu app on this tv not support 4K?

I'm honestly tired of this bullshit. I have to use the Netflix TV app to get 4K and HDR because the PS4 pro Netflix app apparently doesn't do HDR.

But I have to use the PS4 pro Hulu app because it's the only one supports 4K? Like what the fuck are theses companies doing.

Can't say when it comes to PS4, but 4K is supported on the XBO Hulu app. There isn't much 4K content on Hulu yet though as far as I know.

Right, XBO supports it for Hulu too, but my point was why doesn't the tv app support it? I was a single space to switch between apps and not have different devices having different versions supporting different things.

HDMI coupler question

I purchased this coupler

Cable Matters Gold Plated HDMI Female Coupler https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004PVW1DE/?tag=neogaf0e-20

for my psvr and have noticed when hdcp is enabled I got kicked to black screen then back to video.. turning hdcp off resolved it but now I've noticed some screen tearing very weird to explain.. does not happen with my shield..

Does anyone have any other recommendations for a better coupler? I'm pretty confident it's the coupler.

Is "Native" still the best color space for HDR gaming?? (like rting.com review), or shoud I use Auto??

It was only Native during the first few months of the TV, as the firmware had the Auto & Native settings swapped. Unless you really like your colors over-saturated, leave on Auto.

Having to manually switch settings for HDR games every time I want to play an HDR game has made me hesitant to even boot up HDR games.

It's a little thing, but has gotten more and more bothersome with time. To the point I'm probably buying a new set at some point soon.

Is there any substantial difference between the KS8000 and the KS9000? I want to upgrade from my KU6000 set and have those 2 on mind.

I can't remember the details, but I think rtings said the KS9000 got a bit brighter and may had some other perks, but was probably not worth the extra money.

If I get a new set it's for oled not to save me 5 seconds work

The only thing Native screws up is the skin tones of white people and some fair skined people (that's most of the actors and actress lol), almost everything else looks better with the increase of saturation to me.

Now I'm still on firmware version 1140 because I still DON'T HAVE THE INTERNET (AT&T YOU READING THIS!?). I guess I should just download it on a stick and manually install it at this point. :(

Yep. Now that I've killed the nasty little ad, I'm back to finding this TV all but perfect again. If anything, manually adjusting the backlight for HDR in Game Mode less of a pain for me than remembering to switch from Movie to Game mode and vice versa when using my Sbone.

That said, I completely understand why the backlight issue would frustrate people. It's a bug (or a "UI inconsistency" for the pedantic) that shouldn't exist on a TV this expensive, and anything that gets in the way of just selecting the right source and enjoying content is hard to swallow. For me, still the best TV (soon to be un)available for the price.

Anyone else when gaming on this tv with a pc, 1080p and 4k settings work fine , but whenever I want to play at 1440p, the colors are all distorted ( everything is a purple basically). It only happens when I select 1440p.
I had to manually create 2560x1440@60hz in Nvidia control panel otherwise I had weird shit happening.
980ti here.

Auto somewhat works on my ks9000, as long as I don't change it to anything else while something (eg. PS4) is running. If I switch it to low then auto for instance, then it stays stuck on low, even if my PS4 is set to full. Toggling my PS4's rgb setting then makes it auto work again. Also, if running HDR on a PS4 Pro, I believe the RGB setting should be automatically set to the proper setting. The TV should also gray it out for you. When using a regular PS4 though, yes you do need to make sure your TV is running in Full/Normal black level and PS4 is set to full RGB

Auto doesn't work though for my Xbox One. It always thinks that my Xbox is set to low RGB or something.

It does not work, there is a handshake issue.

Had more or less the same thing:

Sorry to say, but you're going to need a panel replacement.
Edit: Samsung identified my complaint back then as 'excessive smear/lag'. They replaced the panel.

Ah nightmare. Take it it's some naturally occurring defect.

Edit: An engineer is booked after contacting Samsung. Thanks for the heads up hopefully it will be hassle free getting it replaced.

Weird. Does it always show up? Or just when you are on the internet?

When ever there's a pure white background so pretty rare during games. On the test pictures on the tv it shows up in the latter 2 of the 3 but not the first full colour photo.

Pretty sure it's only just happened recently though or it's getting worse.

It was for me. Done within an hour. Better uniformity and less light bleed in my new panel as well, so was quite happy.

Still have the random black screens when using RGB444 though, so looks like I have another repair ahead of me.

Thanks for the Netflix "Sparks" recommendation. If you have HDR and you don't notice the color detail on the welder's safety buckles in the first two minutes then

1. Your settings are wrong
2. HDR is not for you
3. Your vision is faulty

I have a blu ray documentary about a Canadian steam engine with a similarly startling example but Sparks is a really easy binary demonstration of why HDR is fidelity and detail, not just range.

To find it just search "HDR" on s 4k equipped Netflix app.

Just bought a SWITCH and I own this TV,
anything I should know about?

Make sure your TV and Switch are both up-to-date with firmware to avoid the "automatically change to the Switch input for no reason" bug. Otherwise, not much else that doesn't apply to any other game system.

Anyone else have severe color banding issues with this TV?

Lots of people have reported it. I think the consensus is that the banding is already present in the source material but there are other TV sets that have features that smooth out gradients (Sony for example) that this set lacks. I don't notice gradients in, say, Planet Earth 2 Ultra HD Blu-rays, so I don't think the set is adding the banding, but it doesn't do anything to alleviate it in other content like Cable/Satellite or games either.

Some people have reported it only in the darkest parts of the picture but that just means the brightness is probably set a little too high (IMO). Compression struggles with the dark parts of the screen and if you want to hide that you're going to have to set the brightness a little lower than what the test disc/slides says is perfect.

It annoys me so much. My 10 year old sharp TV never had this issue. It sucks.

The horrible color banding has almost ruined it for me. I wish I knew this before I bought the TV.

I understand. Can you return it and try something else? I took home numerous different TV models over the course of years and returned them before I settled on the KS8000. No TV is perfect, and no TV is for everyone. It just so happens that the KS8000's flaws don't bother me as much as a lot of the others do. If you want to know about problems before you buy, check out the AVSForum thread about whatever model you're looking at. You'll learn all about the flaws of each model and exactly where/how to find them when you get yours home.

Where do you see the banding? Cable/Satellite? Blu-Rays? Games?

Does it show up in the TV's built-in apps? Have you tried different viewing modes (Standard, Movie, etc.)?

To late to return it. It happens on all inputs, including the built in apps. It's most noticable on games.

Most recently tried playing SOMA using the steam link app, and it's garbage. The banding is horrible and very distracting.

I posted this about a month ago, but this is the best example I have. This is CoD IW during the credits. Brightness is at 45.

Yeah, I remember this picture from before. That's supposed to be a dark background, right?

First, it looks too bright. I keep brightness at 43 in Game Mode and backlight at 10 on non-HDR games. But settings are very personal and panels vary, there are no "absolute correct" settings you can get from the Internet.

Second, it's possible that your have your HDMI Black level setting wrong, which would also cause it to be blown-out like that. Which system is this?

Third, it's possible these credits are just a movie file that plays and therefore is compressed. Compression causes this kind of banding (AKA posterization). Load up this Youtube Video, skip toward the end and make it full screen. I can see very similar banding in the dark background on my computer monitor here at work. How much of that is in the source and how much is just Youtube is unknown, but it's a similar effect but without the brightness issue.

EDIT - Also, the Steam Link is applying compression to everything you see so that posterization is something your going to see everywhere in any streamed game like that.

This is on PS4 Pro. Like I said brightness is at 45. So it's only 2 higher than what you use. Anyways, the brightness doesn't really fix it. It's always there.

I mostly notice it during cutscenes, most recently CoD, Gear of War 4, Halo 5, Yakuza 0. I don't really notice it during normal gameplay, except in RE7, the night sky looks like an oil painting.

Edit: Streamed the video to my older TV,and it looks pretty good. No where near levels of banding as the picture I took. I'll try streaming to the new TV later, see if it still shows up.
