KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

That bitstream delay must be unbelievably frustrating. I don't know if I could have kept the TV if I had to deal with it. Have to say though, for my purposes as just one specific user, it's already a fantastic TV. If the HDR backlight switched automatically in Game Mode (and if the pop-up telling me "an HDR video is playing" came back; and if users didn't need to input a special DNS setting to kill those disgusting advertisements), it would be essentially perfect in terms of performance for me, at least as far as not-OLED panels go. Build quality could be a lot better, but that's a separate issue.

I've even been fortunate with Tizen: I regularly use it for Netflix and occasionally for YouTube, and have had no real issues with it. I'm keenly aware I've been one of the more fortunate users though.
 
Annoying thing is that Samsung removed the HDR badge from showing up when it detects an HDR signal through HDMI so people playing in game mode have to remember which of their games have HDR support so they can know to increase the back light.
 
Man, I am glad I don't have my dad's TV's issues. He has a ks8500, I have a ks8000. We have both had them for a year. HDR works no issues on my TV, but I cannot for the life of me get my PS4 pro or one s to work on his set. 4k hdr blu rays work fine, but the second you try to start an hdr game the tv loses signal. Tried multiple inputs and HDMI cables, including bringing the ones I use from home.

It doesn't bother him since he doesn't game on it, and his standalone Samsung 4k player works fine. But, it drives me crazy.
 
I can't believe how affordable refurbished sets are. The 55 inch is going for $730 through Groupon. That's pretty crazy for a good set.

Yeah, I got one through Amazon for $779 toward the middle of July and haven't had any issues. I'm coming from a Ku6300 and feel that the difference is pretty noticable. I was lucky enough to get the newest update when I first booted up the TV too!

I considered some other sets but the impressions I read on here and the price made it a no-brainer.

Find a KS8000 with old firmware, and try to watch Santa Clarita Diet on the Netflix app. Go to any outdoor scene. The show's world looked like it was going through a solar eclipse. The issue could only be fixed satisfactorily by upping the Gamma to 3, or crushing the blacks/blowing out the whites with Dynamic Contrast. Now the show (and all Netflix HDR content) looks great without the need to mess with either of those settings.

Others have described the grey filter thing with HDR games, but I only ever had an issue with Netflix.

I believe Sony shipped a bunch of Pros with sub par HDMI cables? Have you tried swapped that element out?

I think I might be having that issue with this show, I just checked and it looks the way you described. What are your other settings if you don't mind checking?

I'm pretty sure all (or aren't all?) edge lit displays are like this, but maybe some have it more prominent than others? My ks9000 has this too, but is only really visible when the screen edge is viewed up close and from an angle looking down. Even my phone has this. Are yours visible from regular viewing distance?
 
Not sure when this started happening (and I have been in this thread in a while) but turning on HDMI UHD Color for my PC started putting the backlight automatically to 20 and started doing weird things with the color. And it's dim as hell...Guess I better turn it off for now.

What do you mean by weird things with color? I may be remembering this wrong but I believe enabling UHD color would make that input recognize a connected PC and switch to PC mode automatically. PC mode has it's own set of settings and, unlike game mode, can also do separate SDR and HDR settings. Color space is closer to native though and cannot be changed so that might be what's messing with colors

Found the culprit. I noticed that the weird dimming was only occurring when the resolution was set to 4K. I noticed that the display settings in Windows 10 contained a setting for "HDR and Advanced Color" that I assume was turning of HDR settings even when HDR content wasn't playing.

I've not seen this on my UK KS7/8000. The most obvious thing similar to this is a 1cm high 'frame' around the edges of the TV, where the it's slightly brighter. Nothing like these spikes of light.
 
I too have received 1201. Thats a pretty big leap in Firmware number from 1180...
Well maybe not that big.

Can't see what has been changed however. Was hoping game mode HDR to be fixed but alas.....

Sure: Movie, special modes off, warm 1, Backlight 20, Brightness 47, Contrast 100, Sharpness 0, Gamma 0.

Watch an episode on a different monitor to check: SCD should be a bright, colourful show. HDR makes it pop less, but massively increases detail and realism without sacrificing the bright, colourful tone. However until one of these recent updates, it used to seem like HDR also added a weird grey filter to the picture. It did this with all Netflix HDR content, but SCD best exemplified the wrongness of the picture.

To fix the grey, you'd bump up the Gamma to 3. Totally solved the problem. Now, you can set the Gamma back to 0, and everything still looks great. You'll see a big difference between Gamma 0 and 3 if you're dealing with the grey issue; and not much difference at all now it's fixed.
 
Is there a way to turn off the auto device detection on this TV? For example, I have my PC connected to it but I set the HDMI port as "Game Console" so that it won't switch to PC picture settings which look like hot ass. However, once a while, it recognizes that it's a PC that's connected to the port and then changes the picture settings back to PC mode.

No all edge-lit displays do not do that. That is a defect.

I don't think so, and I know that it kind of defeats the whole purpose of being able to classify inputs :(. I'm able to get my laptop to not be recognized as a pc by enabling xvycc on it's intel control panel. Not sure if something similar exists for desktop GPUs
 
Been playing Hellblade in 30fps mode and the game is really juddery, i've noticed the same thing in other games when i move camera. I'm using game mode. Is there a setting i can change to reduce judder/twitching?

For some reason when my Switch input source is selected it turns the Xbox One source on and off which turns my XB1 on and off.. how do I stop that
 
Question about sound fellas. If I hook up a ps4 to the tv through hdmi and then I hook the TV up to a 5.1 system through optical out, will it pass through the 5.1 sound? Thanks in advance.

Yes, as long as you use Bitstream, as PCM can only do 2.1 in passthrough. However, be aware that Bitstream introduces about 100ms of audio lag when this TV is in game mode. The only way to get 5.1 without audio delay on this TV in game mode is for your devices to be connected directly to your audio device.

It's been a huge pain in the ass for me personally since I don't have a 4K capable receiver, so I have to connect both of my systems to my receiver with an optical cable. This is a great TV if it can be paired with a newer receiver, but a bit of a hasstle for gamers that don't have a newer receiver.

No, at least not any obvious way. I have everything running through a receiver and therefore into one input on the TV. For the longest time it would constantly switch between PC, Game Systems, Cable, etc. However, I recently went through the Remote/Device Setup portion on the TV and set it up to control my cable box and receiver. For some strange reason, my input now reads "Charter/Onkyo" which is my cable and receiver, and now it never switches icons or modes, even with PC. I'm not sure if this is reproducible or just a lucky glitch.

Yes, but it is a very common one. It's also one that could be the result of pressure against the screen from cleaning it or picking up the bottom frame the wrong way, or maybe just heat and time causing layer separation. I noticed a lot of Samsung sets with top and bottom LED lighting having visible flashlighting issues in Best Buy showrooms in 2015-16. But of course those sets are in Torch mode and probably run 24/7, etc.

No, at least not without using non-Game Mode and adding a bunch of lag. Low framerate content tends to look worse on some sets than others. The KS8000 is one of these because the screen does not smear much which is actually helpful in making low framerates more tolerable, and it also has a flickering PWM backlight, which makes judder even more obvious. I've gotten used to it.

Try turning off HDMI-CEC support in the TV. Go to Settings -> Expert Settings -> Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) -> OFF

So it appears that the update is only for European Models for now (their KS7000 is our KS8000).

Check the site here: http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/UE49KS7000UXXU

You'll see that the latest firmware update is 1201.6 dated August 3rd. I'm not sure what the hold-up is for the NA version. Maybe they just forgot to update the US site but these things happen from time to time. The filenames aren't the same of course so the KS8000 would probably not see it as a valid update.

Sounds similar to what SamsungNow said. Probably something to do with how they're trying to reduce judder, if I had to guess.

Yes, though before I uploaded I had a look online and nobody else mentioned it - but they did rave about other improvements.

Except I can't see any other improvements, just this cock up.

Keep away from it and I'll do a couple of tests to see if anything affects it.

Samsung really are useless, aren't they?
 
Does anyone have comcast know how to get the screen to be the right size on the screen. When the comcast guy hooked it up (in April) it seemed to fit the screen. Then shortly after it was cutting off a lot of the sides of the screen. I don't watch broadcast tv on it, but my parents do and they don't seem to notice how fucked up it looks.
