Heart-warming footage has emerged showing a group of chimpanzees overjoyed at seeing sunlight for the first time in their lives at a safari park for ex-laboratory animals in Austria — having spent 30 years cooped up inside testing facilities.

The footage, first broadcast by German television station RTL on September 4, shows two adult chimps frozen in wonder as they stare at the outside world through the open door of their enclosure — as a number of their fellow primates linger in the dark behind them.

The first chimp takes only a few tentative steps outside before turning back, grabbing its friend in a bear hug and squealing in excitement.

Only 30 seconds long but what's amazing is their reaction. It's so human like. It's pretty awful treating creatures with such emotions and feelings like that. Reminds me of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Edit: YT link, german dubbed though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCuxabHGe5Q

Won't play for me in the UK, can someone upload it to Youtube.

Edit: thanks, that's really, really sad. But happy at the same time.

That is so heartwarming and so fucking sad at the same time :(
Poor champs locked up all those years well at least they were let out.

This makes me want to blow my own head off in shame, for being a part of this bacteria known as the Human Race. This planet will be so much better off once we are gone, that is if we dont completely destroy it first.

Hey, I see some dumbass gafer got a youtube account.

Lawls at thinking humanity can destroy the planet.

I wish we were a better species.
I know it's sad but we have to do our various tests on somebody... I still think we should limit animal use in many of those various tests.

Yeah but being cooped up in a lab for 30 years? That's a goddamn shame.

Planet would still be here. Eventually it would start to heal and what little life was left would start to evolve again.
Can't fuck with them thermal vents. All sorts of crazy shit down there that doesn't even rely on sunlight.

Now if we drilled a hole deep enough and threw a really big nuke down there, then we might be getting somewhere.

This is really sad. Humans are just fucking evil. ugh

Yes, we're all very horrible. We should all be killed. Down with mankind!
Luckily, it's just a matter of time, and most likely not in my lifetime. win/win

I want to know what sort of experiments they were subjected to for 30 years. Was it perhaps some sort of serum that's supposed to give them more human-like emotions?

Seriously though, it looked like the first ape was pushed at the door so he turned around to grab the one that pushed him. Their "smiles' don't really show emotions as much as 'aping' the humans they've been around their whole lives.

Besides, what would they be so happy about? They don't know what "the sun" is. It's just another light source to them.

wouldnt destroy the planet. you could set off every single one we have and it wont destroy the planet. It'll kill all us stupid humans off, but the planet would survive, adapt, new life would form, and in a few million years some other dominant life form will take over.

Is there any indication they were mistreated during their captivity? What kind of tests were conducted?

Technically speaking, they're still in captivity, right?

That would probably kill us and most life on earth. But the earth itself? It'll be back to running normally in a blink of an eye. It's survived global holocausts before just fine.

ooooooooooooooooooooh the earth will be left as a scorched lifeless rock but HEY it will still be around

your definition of "destroy" is a little extreme there

you making a joke? The depth of emotions displayed by the great apes both in the wild and those raised in captivity is astonishing to most observers, puts most anything from domesticated pets to shame.

So for 30 years, they couldn't even go outside? Not even for fresh air, nothing??

What a shame.

Just simply link him to the video of chimpanzees ripping peoples limbs and faces off. I think he'll sing another tune.

From?

Earth started out pretty much as lifless rock. Then god put us here. He will do it again.

The first sentence was a joke. What you quoted isn't. I can see them being happy about going out to play for a bit, but I think this video, with its sappy music, is trying to make more of the situation than it is. These apes aren't saying "Oh wow, look at how amazing it is for us to see the sun for the first time in 30 years." They are likely just enjoying some leisure time and have no awareness of the sun at all.
