Yup, she's is looking damn good. Video makes the song better, really. On its own though, Applause is still pretty weak/standard so I hope its not indicative of the rest of the album.

The Queen is the perfect drag show song. It's hilarious and camp, so I dig it.

Fashion Of His Love is actually pretty good for what it is. The problem is that Gaga's voice doesn't really sell it. She has a great voice but she absolutely canNOT channel Whitney. I feel like if Beyonce covered this song she would really elevate it and give the song more worth.

Highway Unicorn on the other hand is so trite and its attempt at being kind of arena rock is commendable, but the melodies really hold it down from really going anywhere. The verses are good, the chorus is too static though. It could have been so much more than what it was.

If I'd rank the worst songs from Born This Way:
1) Highway Unicorn
2) Bad Kids
3) Black Jesus + Amen Fashion
4) Heavy Metal Lover (sorry)
5) The Queen

FOHL and TQ are just two tracks I can't seem to enjoy regardless of what perspective I listen to them with. FoHL is just so Whitney-inspired cheese that, like you said, may be the fault of her voice not being up to par or delivered convincingly. But it's mainly the production I find unattractive. The Queen I have similar sentiments for.

There are some good sections in BJ+AF in the production and some of the vocal arrangement, like the intro and the "I AM," but I completely forgot it even existed. I still do love that little instrument in the beginning though, so much so that I turned it into a ringtone.
 
Inez broke down the video's key scenes for MTV News.

She added, "There were all these kinds of, let's say, tricks in there, but then the big idea was really to have her symbolize this moment of her hip breaking. That's why she's sort of holding up her right leg as a trophy and this idea that no matter what it takes, she'll get back onstage."

The Clam Bikini
She explained that "we were extremely inspired by Botticelli's painting," for that look where Gaga appears in a clam shell bikini, her curls cascading around her shoulders. She added "[We were also inspired by] having this idea that she goes through this struggle to go back onstage, which is in that pink laser tower. And she's sort of dragging that leg as a trophy and making it back on stage as a fully-realized, complete new person and that's why the Botticelli came to mind."


The Black Swan
The scene where Gaga's head appears on a black swan was not inspired by the Darren Aronofsky film, but instead more by Gaga's fascination with eggs. "She's always had the egg reference in her work and since this video is kind of about a rebirth and at the end there's the Botticelli 'Birth of Venus' reference, so we said, 'OK, an egg... a fur egg and what comes out of a fur egg?' In our minds, a black swan with her face on it," Inez said.

That Other Bikini
For a song like "Applause," the directors knew they needed a way to get hands in there so they found the most unexpected way to do it. She said, "The glove-kini! That's Brandon Maxwell, her fashion director that had that made. The song's called 'Applause.' There had to be hands."

Turned off the "Applause" video after a few seconds and searched for "Love Game" vid instead to remind me that I used to like her songs. :/

I miss the time when her pop video is just her in bad wigs dancing with backup dancers.

Really liked this one and...she smiled! Wow! Lol. She's been looking so dead in a lot of her videos so it's nice to see her looking happy.

Fun song, good video, looking forward to the album. :D

I love the video, the stills are ICONIC. You knew when they said the cover art was lifted right from the video it was going to be awesome. it's a shame nemesis is missing all this. :(
 
The way the video quick cuts into random segments of her doing odd things reminds me of something that I can't quite put my finger on. It's going to bug me until I find out where I've seen that style of video.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed all the references. Great video, though jarring.

If Gaga is really going after the "art" of pop, I have a feeling she is going to disappoint sales wise cause this will lead to a less mainstream market understanding.

Either way, I like it so far.

Yep. Sad that videos can't simply be artistic for the sake of being artistic from their creator's point of view. Shame that that belief has grown like a cancerous tumor throughout YouTube.

I was trying to work out why I love it and I think it's really simple - Gaga is having fun and smiling in it. The Born This Way videos were great (imo) but she was very gloomy and serious. This is like the polar opposite.

I read Inez and Vidnoodh(sp?) actually tried to make it so every frame can be frozen and could be a poster / photograph. I think they've succeeded (though I've by no means tested it lol)
