Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris | Review Thread

My friend was trying to play his DD version of Dragon Age on my PS4 at my place recently while PSN was under maintenance and he wasn't able to play because of some license error, we uninstalled it and re-installed my disc version (Which I haven't unwrapped yet because I was still playing Smash.) and it worked fine after that. :3

It made me feel better about going physical since the beginning, plus it convinced him to never go digital again. :lol
Digital does have it drawbacks.

Played a bit of coop yesterday (PC)
Controls feel a bit more janky than the first one and we had several sync issues like "hey why are you shooting the wall while floating in the air and jumping off the cliff" kind of things.

I finished it solo tonight. Really good game. I wasn't sure I cared for the loot system, but eventually I got some kickass rings and weapons and it won me over. I think the hubworld is a pretty good addition. Better boss fights here too probably.

I think the staff is a fairly cool tool. There are some really clever puzzles with it and the new torch. I think switching to something new from the spear was probably the right call. They may have ended up just reusing a lot of solutions from before again. But I'm inclined to say the spear was cooler overall.

I also missed those levels where you sort of have to go every which way gathering boulders to the middle. I think stuff like that gave the level structures in Guardian of Light a bit more variety. This game needed more challenge tombs too.

If I had to say right now, I'd say it wasn't quite as good as GoL. But I haven't even played co-op yet which I will do when my buddy comes over this weekend. And that was certainly the best part of GoL, so I need to see how ToO's co-op compares before really sizing these two experiences up.

Will also be chipping away at all the challenges. Doing pretty good so far.

Anyone have issues with the PC version of the game not saving? Progress is there if I exit to the main menu but once I close the game, it's all lost.

Saw a few posts about it on the Steam forums but found nothing else. It's gamebreaking.

This has no OT? Ok then...

You can't use the season pass content or in the first playthrough right? You get the Tomb Raider (2013) costume through the season pass right now but I can't use it?

It's in the DLC items chest that's in the center of the hub world. You can only get it after the first level.

Yeah and I also had to restart the game for it to install. Which I find strange because when I checked it said "installed content" or whatever but I guess not...? The PS4 system is annoying due to this cause I never know if I have downloaded content or not and I can't choose to install it separately or something... apparently it installs when I purcahse it but then it doesnt really say when or what it's downloading or whatever?

Ugh, PS4 I love you but I don't understand you.

And where can I do it?

... wtf?

I think I only have two challenges left to do. A couple of score challenges. Hoping to take the co-op for a spin with a friend tonight.

Did you open the chest in the screenshot? Worked for me, but that's on PC.

MY GOD!

I went up to it so many times from all sides and there was no prompt or anything. I restarted the game for the 3rd time and now I went up to it and there was a prompt. I'm so annoyed with myself.

Love the game though <3 So much fun.

Playing on PS4 and there is some weird technical hangups that are bothering me. The framerate feels a bit stuttery too often which really gets in the way of precision platforming and even movement(which also feels a bit swimmy/sluggish with a bit of lag).

Speaking also of movement, at times the character makes exceedingly long wide turns trying to do a 180. If I am moving in a direction at full tilt and notice say a powerup behind me, the character will do some crazy wide fishtail about-turn which is very awkward instead of giving the feeling I have complete control. Does anyone else not feel this? It's really irritating. I'm hesitant to hook up my 360 to compare with GoL, but the overall movement feels far worse than I recall of that game.

The puzzles and secret hunts are alright, on par with GoL(but were more novel then). Not really loving the game as much as I had expected, but I am only about 3 levels in and the control and technical concerns are really pushing me away from pressing on.

I had stuttering on PC as well, independent of graphic settings. Like my GPU (GTX 670) was at 80% load almost all the time, which is ridiculous for a game like this. May be my system, but it could also be a crappy engine or optimization. I remember GoL stuttering like hell on my PS3 as well.

I had no problems with the movement, I like that it has "weight", but I agree with the rest. It's pretty much more GoL with a different gimmick and a bad randomized loot system. It's alright.

Anyone know the actual requirements for the "Complete all challenges" trophy? I think I have done it, but I have not gotten the trophy yet. Maybe I will go back and double check everywhere to be sure. Or maybe there are some that are only in co-op (I only did singleplayer so far)?

Edit: Nevermind. I hadn't done the Architect time trial I guess. Got the trophy!

I'm still not able to play this on Steam, the game doesn't load savefiles. It's been reported on the forums, but I wonder if it'll even be patched--steamcharts.com shows a peak of 500 players for the game after release. It looks like nobody bought it.

Gonna wait a bit, otherwise gonna contact Steam customer support to see if I can at least get wallet credit back or something.

For anyone who has picked up the retail version: does it include the season pass? Amazon/GameStop list it as being included, but there's nothing on the actual box saying it is.

ON the final boss, Might try to write something up tomorrow. The boss battles have been fun, big and impressive looking. Lara talks a bit too much during puzzles but the GOL bones are still there and its still fun.

Boss-wise, Temple of Osiris' final one was a disappointment for me. Which is weird, considering that all-in-all these encounters are superior in execution next to the original game. I really enjoyed the multi-tiered nature of the Xololt fight in Guardian of Light and how he was designed around using the level itself to his advantage, while Set's encounter is primarily straight-forward spectacle unfortunately. Sufficiently pleasing enough visually, but too simple for a grand finale even in co-op (which I played first). That said, I still like Temple of Osiris a lot.

I found that Lara talks less when playing co-operatively, whereas there's indeed a bit too much handholding going through the game solo.

Just curious, is this game good if you play it on your own? All the reviews and feedback I see on it mention how strong it is from a CoOp perspective, but I tend to play games on my own more often than not.
Right now it is $20 for the game with the Season Pass on the PSN Flash Sale so thinking of picking it up, but not if it really cannot be enjoyed by oneself.

I played it alone before doing co-op and thought it was a lot of fun solo. A little less unique but some really cool puzzles, fun combat and lots to explore for still. Some of the challenges certainly seem better approached alone too to be honest. I'd say it's worth a shot alone but not sure how many people would agree.

Game was good. It's a shame to not see too many people talking about it. Online has been a little iffy and it doesnt seem like there's a huge pool of players playing it.

It felt a little shorter than GOL but I did like the HUB area of it. Wish that part had some more stuff to do or more secret tombs to explore.

I think that's an area where the game falters a bit, and there should have been a few more secret tombs and at least one other big one. Still, what was there was fun, and TOO ups GOL in a lot of ways. Graphics are way more vaired and the weather change system makes for some good effects.

The loot system is fun but the need to go after more is diminished by the fact that the game is rather easy. Different guns are cool, but the above con is still there. However, I found it to be a nice addition, albiet a little on the useless side.

Level design is good, although it seems a bit simpler than GOL at times, with Lara giving you tips in single-player when she shouldn't really be doing so. Most of the levels are capped off with a great boss fight though, some really impressive stuff.

Two things I want to add. Lara's rolling has been changed a bit for the worse, nothing too bad, but sometimes she does the flip stuff when you just want to purely roll. Didn't cause much of an issue but it is noticeable.

Oh, and unless I'm missing something, there's almost no extra costumes this time around. Like, I don't think you'd get any without the seas pass. A bummer since the first one had some cool extras.

Yeah, she talks less in co-op.

I agree the final boss wasn't too up to snuff, but every other one was pretty fun. Blows GOL out of the water in that regard.

Played through it alone the first time. Had a good time. These games are designed with both styles of play in mind, and I don't feel like the SP suffers because of that.

Just beat this tonight. I enjoyed it for the most part, but it didn't leave as much of an impression on me as the first one did.

Also encountered a pretty serious progression stopping bug on the PS4. Was about to enter the Tomb of the Architect, and the cutscene wouldn't trigger after stepping on the pressure plate for the first time to try and get the gears moving. Found a lot of people with a similar issue on the Square-Enix forums and ended up having to uninstall the game, re-download it, and then cancel the update patch. Kind of frustrating, since it happens so close to the end of the game and my internet connection isn't great, leading to some downtime before I could get back to the game.

Is this the "unofficial thread" for the game?

Anyway, i beat this yesterday in 3 player (local) coop.
I had a blast with the game, as much as the first one, it lacked the novelty of it, but added 3/4 player coop and a bunch of other stuff that i appreciated (loot, interesting bosses etc).

Felt a bit on the short side, but considering the puzzles changes significantly when playing alone, there's quite some replay value in there.
Also, the grappling hook felt somewhat less responsive and buggy at times, maybe just an impression.

Also, i remembered how much i loved the classic Lara design (yeah, nostalgia is a bitch) and, especially, her classic voice.
That Tomb Raider reboot had really soured me on the franchise, but this one brought back all the good memories.

Anybody playing this via Plus?

The hub world is terrible. It's such a confusing mess. Surely it can't just be me?

Edit: Oh crap. I thought this was the OT, not a review thread. Apologies for the resurrection.

Didn't know where else to post these.. here are a few glitches that a friend and I ran into while playing tonight.

Lara Can Fly

Glitches (apologies for the language - didn't realize how much I was cursing 'til I posted it)

Also, for anyone that's uploaded a lot on PS4 - how do you include a friend's voice on recordings? We were in a party chat while playing, but his voice wasn't included. We both even have the "Allow Your Voice to Be Shared" set to Always Allow... yet it wasn't in either clip.

Oh boy do i agree. I absolutely loved the first one, but between the clusterfuck that is the hub world and the coop glitches, i really can't get into it.

Was having fun with this until the awful roll ball thing unto bomb on the floor to make it explode so the ball goes upward while holding L2 to slow time to reach higher area blah blah blah...bye bye Temple.

It is a little confusing. Me and my wife played through Guardians of Light and really enjoyed it, but Temple of Osiris we kind of sputtered on pretty early and never picked up.

Didn't see an OT, so apologies for the bump if I missed it.

I finally got around to playing/beating this earlier this week as I worked through my backlog (bought this a few years back with Order of the Stick in an Ubisoft sale). Temple of Osiris still runs terribly on PC and is subject to weird input lag. Yeah, it looks better than Guardian of Light, but that game ran as smooth as butter. Overall, I appreciate that the developers tried to bring in new elements here (boss battles, weather/time system, hub, staff raising blocks/pausing bombs), but Guardian of Light really nailed the basics and had clever puzzles and platforming, whereas this game largely didn't (the voice acting and storytelling are also weaker).

I played through GoL both single and 2P co-op whereas I just played ToO single-player; maybe the 4P mode makes up for all the game's other deficiencies. I don't think I'll touch it again, in any case.
