Last Console Your Parents / Family Bought You?

Money for a PS2 since my family lives in Spain and I was going to the US for college.

Bought the system, a memory card and Final Fantasy X

ah, good times

My mom bought me a PS1 in like Grade 11 to kind of stop me from going out and smoking weed every night. Little did she know how well video games and weed go together. That was the last gaming system someone else bought for me. The first one I bought with my own money was a GBA.

I was a young adult when the Wii came out, but I thought it would be a cool birthday gift so got that from my parents. That was the last one.

I got a PlayStation for my 12th birthday or so.

My mom never made that mistake again. She pretty much just gave me books after that.

My Nintendo DS Lite, after the hinge on my DS cracked. That's actually the only system they bought for me too. They gave my brother an N64, GBA, and DS. I had to save up my allowance/birthday/Christmas money to get my GBA SP, GameCube, two DSes before the DS Lite because the first was stolen. I was 12 or 13 when they got me the DS Lite so after that I didn't really expect them to get me any game related stuff.

Lol

My mom was fervently against my video game playing. I was fortunate that my dad realized it was a hobby I was getting a lot of enjoyment out of.

My mom still gives me shit for playing video games and I'm 31 fucking years old.

XBOX 360 for Christmas, I've been on my own since then.

The SNES was my first console I received as a gift (unless you want to count the OG Gameboy).

I was talking with a co-worker reminiscing about old consoles and I mentioned the fact that the Gamecube was the last console my parents bought me. I was on my own from then on.

Wanted to inquire with GAF about the same. What's the last (or latest one, lucky) one you received as a gift?

PS3 as a birthday gift, though I had bought the PS2 before it with my own money.
$499 was too much for me.

The original XBOX. By the time 360 and PS3 came out I was working and expected to make those kinds of purchases myself. It was exciting too being able to line up and pay with my own hard earned cash a launch PS3, but set me back too at that steep $599 price :(

Commodore 64 for me. Started working a couple of years later and grabbed myself a NES. Back when there was a massive Toys R Us in Birkenhead.

God i feel old now.

Mine was the Playstation 3, a few years into its life. Past that... I remember getting 3DS, Vita, PS4 and Switch all with my own money around launch (and X1 after a year or two). PS4 I think was the first one where I was working, but I had enough saved up for the handhelds before that.

The psp, unless handhelds don't count, then it was the Gamecube. Which I don't remember even asking for. I think I made some off hand remark that the gamecube had some cool games. Then Christmas came and I was shocked.

The psp I definitely asked for.

Philips VideoPac G7200

My parents bought me a Nintendo Entertainment System and a Sega Genesis for two of my birthdays. Both were pretty far into their generations when I got them, as my parents weren't going to spend much more than $100 on a gift when i was a kid. I think that I got my NES in March 1991 and the Genesis in March 1994. That would have made me 9 and 12. I also had a C64 before my NES, which was my first Computer.

I bought myself every other system since then, starting with the 32x near launch (blah). So 13 consoles, 5 handhelds, and however you want to count the Switch. SNES, N64, and Dreamcast were all after the fact, when places were cleaning out their game stock. The rest were concurrent with their generations.

3DS, and Switch have been my only "launch year" systems in the past 20 years. Saturn was my only launch month system. PS1, PS2, and the Wii were about a year after launch. Most of the others were 2-3 years post launch. I dislike launch window game droughts.

Well, my awesome fiancée got me a Vita for my birthday last year! That was pretty awesome. Love this thing!
