Last minute indecision. Which PS 4 launch game to get?

Hello,

It seems that most launch games have some sort of caveat.

I currently only have Killzone: Shadow Fall preordered, but apparently the campaign is not that exciting, and the multiplayer is not that fun for solo players.

That's why I am considering changing my pre-ordered game.

Other options that I have considered are:
- Assassins Creed IV: (Worried about it being grindy / repetitive.)
- Battlefield 4: Worried about reports of bugginess.

What launch games did you guys get, and how would you rate them?

I know there are F2P options, but I am tempted to buy one retail game...

Thanks for any opinions!

I believe ACIV is considered the best out of those three. Shadow Fall is probably the better game if you want a decent campaign and multiplayer, while Battlefield is better if you want a large-scale multiplayer but don't give a shit about the campaign.

I'd still get KZ:SF if I were you..... curiosity will eventually force you to buy it if you have any interest whatsoever........ Personally I really do like the single player portion of the game, but it's taking me awhile as I pay in about 1 hour bursts. YMMV but the beautiful graphics have been worth a good portion of the price of admission, as well.

don't mean to hijack the thread, but I'm in the same situation as OP

except I refuse to buy EA and Ubi titles until they sort the pricing bullshit out. so idk, I guess I'll get NBA 2K14?

Code:
- Assassins Creed IV: (Worried about it being grindy / repetitive.)

I hated, hated, hated AC3, thought it was an embarrasment for Ubisoft and it turned me off their games. I haven't really liked an AC game since Brotherhood. That said, I think Black Flag is the best AC game they've ever made. It is grindy... but in good way. Unlike AC3, where they seemed to think you'd want to chase down endless collectibles just because, everything you can pick up in this game feeds back into making Edward a better pirate, and so I do find myself compelled to chase down every shanty, Animus fragment, find every treasure, and upgrade my ship to the max. It's a fantastically fun launch game. It also helps that it's gorgeous. Not in a "THAT'S NEXT GEN!" way that games like Killzone and Ryse are, but it's crisp, and the framerate is ultra smooth.

I picked Killzone first. It's an amazing graphical showcase of next gen, the campaign is solid (sans some issues in chapter 2 and 8), and the multiplayer is a blast.

Once I beat the campaign of that, I did go back and grab Assassins Creed. While not quite the graphical powerhouse like Killzone, still a beautiful game and a lot of fun so far. The pirate naval battles are truly amazing.

What I am saying is, you can't go wrong with either!

I want to love the game but it still suffers those clunky gameplay mechanics. But I do agree there's a reason for exploring this time

I'd already bought it for PC a couple weeks before my PS4 showed up, but my favorite PS4 launch title is actually LEGO Marvel.
Out of those three, AC4 is the best game. But part of a new console is those next-gen feels, and Killzone easily wins there.

If I had a PS4 now, all I would play would be Resogun. That looks amazing!

AC4 of those, I believe. Although I've been deeply intrigued by the promising reviews of Need For Speed: Rivals, and I'll be picking that up too.

LOVE your avatar!!! Great game (VVVVVV) for anyone who owns a 3DS! Great digital title to have on you for quick spurts of gameplay throughout the day. WARNING, highly addictive!

Back to topic, I recently got hands on with Resogun at a friends and have to say, it's pretty awesome. I had a complete 180 flip on my thoughts with it thinking it would suck because of its 5-levels only, but intensity builds with every large encounter that keeps coming at you and keeps your face glued to your TV for hours!!!

AC4 and BF4 are the two best games so far this gen, IMO. BF4 has stability issues but it's been getting better. I find it to be very playable.

I've actually been having fun with Killzone's campaign. The multiplayer is decent and feels different than COD or battlefield. I bought KZ, AC4 and BF4 at launch but I would have to say Resogun is the game I keep going back to. If you want a shooter I'd get BF4.

I have played FIFA the most of the games I bought at retail (BF4, KZ:SF, Knack). I probably will wait for a sale on AC IV

I picked up AC4, Killzone and NFS:Rivals. Haven't played much of AC4 yet, a couple levels of Killzone but lots of Rivals.

Need for Speed Rivals is definitely my favourite launch game. Graphics are nice, seamless online/career mode, just the pure thrill of driving fast and knocking other players out of races.

If you haven't considered it, you should...

I would absolutely avoid BF4 with all the reports of it being broken on every platform.

There were some issues in the beginning with modes being unplayable but I have been able to play online just fine. I'm not a hardcore online gamer though and my online is maybe 10-20 matches total but of those, it's been fine.

From my experiences ...

Knack - play it on Hard and you get yourself a 10-15 hour, challenging adventure title. I give the game a solid 8.5. It is simple yes, as is plenty of titles that are more kid friendly, but it is beautiful, the only game of its kind at launch, and has enough challenge to keep you glued to each encounter.

AC4 - again, beautiful game and looks to have a ton going on so it should last quite awhile. Sailing around the ocean is just mesmerizing to say the least.

I am also enjoying the hell out of Warframe and Res0gun. Both free.

From what I hear it seems Need for Speed and NBA2K will be my next targets for purchase. I want a shooter too, but can't decide on the insane look of Killzone or the MP of Battlefield 4 .. once it gets fixed.

War Thunder hits the 29th too so that is going to be insanely fun, for free.

Just get Killzone, from everything I've seen, it just looks amazing....

Plus, if you want to play with a group, either A) join a clan, or B) jump in with the many Gaffers playing it.

I can concur. I've had no issues with modes other than conquest.... (which really isnt my thing anyway)

However, I have had my single player game wiped out twice by corrupt saves.....I will wait to go back to that portion of the game.

AC4 is fantastic, as is Killzone Shadow Fall. Don't bother with Battlefield 4 right now because it's unbelievably broken. Wait a month or two and get it for less money when it works.

My favorites so far are Killzone and NFS Rivals. I have BF4 but haven't played it much do to bugs. It is probably fixed now or will be soon. COD is fun too but graphically it feels like a higher resolution of a current gen game. Killzone multiplayer is great other than the UI and I think they will patch in chat (for non-partys) Killzone SP is a seriously mixed bag with some majors ups and downs. Still, I recommend KZ if you like shooters.

I think that it's true that AC has clunky mechanics, but I believe this is mitigated by the fact that environments are generally much more open than the past games.

I didn't have a lot of extra cash to burn after I picked up my PS4, so I'm pleased that I got AC because it's a very meaty game, and the grind is a good grind.

Don't believe Polygon's lies. Get KZ, beat the campaign and experience the best next-gen graphics available today, try MP and if it doesn't suit you, trade it in and get AC4.
I disliked AC4 at first, but now that I'm a pirate with my own ship, it's glorious.

I will definitely get Killzone as it’s in the bundle.

I want to buy NBA 2k14 or Fifa 14 as well, still undecided.

And last but not least I will trade in some PS3/360 games for store credit of which I hope to be able to get BF4 without paying extra.
