God the fucking Republican party can shove a 2nd Amendment shotgun up their assholes (whether that is their actual asshole or their mouth is up to you) because of their stupidity. Listening to fucking Gingrich saying that people "feel" crime is up when evidence points to the other direction infuriates me. It is a perfect example of the entire Republican party's mental capacity, numbers over 1 (because they wanna be NUMBER 1!!!!) confuses them. The RNC was in the end a KKK meeting but ditching the bedsheets for suits.

Yeah that kind of thing is very worrying. There is a trend of anti-intellectualism that will just ignore facts and go with gut feeling instead, and that can't bring anything good. Worst thing is, it makes it impossible to reason with people, since by definition they're ignoring all kinds of reasoning. It's especially scary when people just admit it like that, "you have your facts, I have my feelings, so I'll go with those". It remembers me of "people are tired of experts" from the Brexit campaign.
We should really work at preventing that way of thinking to spread across countries and populations, or civilization will suffer a 2500 years regression, back to before Socratic philosophy.

This is the guy considered an intellectual by this party basically saying "Fuck facts, we're going to exploit people's feelings."
This is fucking ABSURD. But this is exactly the right-wing strategy and has been for decades. If they can make people "feel" the economy is doing well when it isn't, or that people are safer when they aren't, or that the general state of America is great when it isn't, their idiotic base will believe it to be factually true.
They could be sitting around with no money, in debt, no job, and still looking around going, "America is great again!"

I have never, ever seen John so angry. It was not a comedy show, but an act of aggression. He barely got into many of the speeches and barely touched on the DNC leaks, but that wasn't really the point.

I imagine the reason John is particularly pissed about Trump's statement to the parents of the fallen Captain not only because it was the dickest thing he could have said, but also because his wife is serving in the military too so it must have struck a personal cord with him.
I doubt he would do it, but it would be nice if he devoted these next few months to destroying Trump.

I was talking to my dad about this last night and we agreed that Trump gaining power exposes two major problems with America.
a) A good portion are either uneducated, bigots, or both.
b) The two party system has crashed and burned. People are so set in their ways that they would vote for a literal bag of crap if it had an R by it's name.
On B, we've only ever had the two party system. So while the GOP is collapsing, the system isn't.
This happens roughly every 40 years. But the stakes are higher now with nukes, terrorism, and economic stagnation for a large group of the population.
Parties having their coalitions fracture, and something new being born out of tje ashes are nothing new.
I sincerely hope Trump loses this election in a landslide defeat just so I can see the big ass smile on John's face on the following episode, or else I'm moving to Canada and calling Justin Trudeau my leader.
We can only hope. Though it becomes the same problem he's railing against. If he does it every week, it becomes white noise that's easy ignore and has less effect.

Also: the Last Week Tonight audience doesn't need any convincing really that Trump is a piece of shit.
If there is a Last Week Tonight viewer who can turn around and go "Yea, Trump/Pence for life!", I truly lose faith in human intelligence.
It is hard not to be sincere when calling out a guy that is literally shitting over the parents of a deceased soldier for political gain, because honestly: fuck that arsehole.
I'd be shocked, mostly because I suspect the typical conservative views shows like LWT, The Daily Show, and Full Frontal the same way everyone else views FOX News (Liberal/Conservative Agenda Show that spews out bullshit).

There's literally nothing that can be done with a large portion of Trump supporters, they've disconnected from reality and substituted it for one of their own, they're too far gone. As opposed to a large number of Bernie supporters who are in a strong amount of denial.
Those are just trolls who have nothing better to do/paid by some PACs. I see these people everywhere, even in channels like Democracy Now which has a tiny audience.
As such, I wouldn't consider them actual viewers.
Journalism was great. Especially the trailer at the end.
Unfortunately, sometimes it just feels like Jon Oliver is narrating the decline of civilization. Often they end the segment by proposing how to enact change, but this is one of those times where there's nothing hopeful to say.
