Last Week Tonight with John Oliver - returns Feb 12th 2017

I usually really enjoy John Oliver's show and I always think and love that shows like his are part of a wider contemporary journalism ecology. But I really didn't enjoy this episode as I saw it as part of the problem he was calling out. He's been a lot if not most of the time simplistic, but this time the conservative and dramatic to the point of guilt tripping approach really put me off.

Sleazy ass car dealers and their ridiculous ass subprime loans. How is this even a legit business practice? People need to educate themselves more before they fall victim to these kind of predatory business practices.

I just recently finished paying off my car loan, feels good but I also went through a local dealership, and credit union and not some skeezy dealers like I use to hear on the radio and see local commercials for on TV.

Or at least have a little common sense but these companies just pray on the desperation of people who need transportation. No different the payday loan sorts and others that are basically in the same business and they should all be wiped out.

Actually it was just over two years ago Last Week Tonight covered payday loans.

You should look at the predatory leaning industry in general. Car loan interest rates are "reasonable" compared to the cartoonish rates that "payday" loans carry. Also, to your second point, they are targeting poor, uninformed people who would be much less likely to educate themselves on these practices.

It's still not showing up for me on the app or the website. It's like the only one of their shows that doesn't get uploaded when it airs. *mopes away*

It is, I just watched it. it's under August 14th though

Nope. Not for me anyways.

It aired today, so it won't go live until tomorrow. I forget when the episodes actually go live, but it'll be a bit, I guess.

EDIT: Nevermind, guess it's up.

Nope, it's not.

Nah, this isn't added late like Bill Maher (which is delayed because it's a live show). Last Week Tonight is usually up at it's scheduled air time on HBO Now. Has been every week. This is a glitch or something.

It was delayed last week too, though I don't know for how long. I went to watch it and it wasn't there yet, so I just gave up until the next day.

It's taken 10-15 minutes to show up on me once or twice, but roughly, it's there within the hour for sure.

Right now it's showing up but there's a static image for a while, and then a test pattern and signal noise. Weird.

Something about the last segment left a really bad taste in my mouth. Like it's making fun of Trump, but it also played into this idolization of him in an imaginary way. The "drop out and be a hero" mentality is just...ugh.

They uploaded...something

It shows the above image for, like, 4 minutes, and then it shows this:

for 20 minutes, and then the episode starts with 5 minutes left. And now they removed the video too?

EDIT: RaidenZR knows what I'm talking about.

Yeah that was what I was referring to, but now it's back to nothing. Really odd considering this isn't peak, high-bandwidth demand like that of a Game of Thrones premiere.

Charter schools fucking suck. These people are playing with kid's lives.

I had no idea these were a thing. Looking it up now, they're not a thing in most of Canada. I cannot believe publicly-funded primary school can be run privately. That just seems ripe for corruption and bullshittery.

Charter Schools segment is on youtube. Click here.

Charter schools need more public oversight which is the opposite reason for their existence. I can't believe the American Left has abandoned public schools and teachers. Democratic politicians are pushing for charter schools is just sad. Public money paying for privatized interests doesn't make any sense. I hope this video gets more people to realize some of the unsavory aspects of charter schools. This segment could've been longer honestly.

Charter schools does seem to be the worst of both worlds. If you're going to bring free market with public money on the equation, I don't understand why a voucher isn't better, though I imagine it could bring similar problemas, I can't imagine something more ideological repulsive both for the socialist left and the libertarian right than giving public money directly to a private institution.

(I don't know how it works there, but here in Brazil, that's how public transportation works and it's as awful as you can imagine)

Play into the only thing he understands. His vanity and ego.

The whole last segment was weird to me. I couldn't really tell if Oliver was serious or not. His assessment that Trump only has two options, to either lose or rebound to victory, was odd. Eve if Trump successfully rebrand himself and managed to keep himself on a leash, him rebounding to victory isn't going to be some easy feat. That makes me think the whole segment is ultimately very cheeky in the end, though Oliver plays it super straight.

Not just that, I'm convinced Trump has no desire to actually get elected. They're essentially giving him an easy out, all he has to do is grab on to it.

Trump wants to win, and he has always wanted to win. The only reason anyone thinks otherwise is the evolution of the "Trump is Unstoppable" narrative to a "Trump never wanted to Win" one for those who can't process Trump as anything less than some unstoppable force when he never was.

Was I alone in expecting Oliver to say that he founded a Charter School to prove how much the procedure is bullshit? lol

I was totally expecting that.

I'm curious if they thought about doing it, then decided they didn't want to risk parents enrolling their kids as a joke.

I'm assuming The Kid Who Ran For President.

Funny enough, that was one of my favorites as a kid and I've actually been reminded of the book a lot this past year because of Trump's campaign. Blew my mind that John Oliver read it and made that comparison on this sort of scale.

Yeah seriously, I read The Kid Who Ran For President so many times as a kid, seeing this segment was kinda surreal. Good stuff though.

I just watching this (well, mainly the Youtube channel) and this is exactly what I needed since Report and Daily Show ended.

If you can or haven't yet, check out Full Frontal with Samantha Bee on TBS. John Oliver and her are the real successors to Steven Colbert and Jon Stewart.
