Lasted two weeks on very low carb diet

I have lost about 70 pounds since last June/July until now through a pretty dramatic lifestyle change. I am not no carb by any means but I try to stick to healthy carbs in fruits, veggies, potatoes and brown rice. I have also started exercising and the combination of the two when I am on top of things is really awesome. I do find that my weight drops faster when I stick to the fruits, veggies, protein and cut out the taters and rice and such.

One thing I have really struggled with is the idea of the cheat day though. Through my experiences on this diet I have realized how much food affects my moods. I have had issues with chronic depression and anxiety all of my life and (not coincidentally) I have not eaten great for most of my life.

After a week or two of maintaining a calorie deficit without much in the way of carbs I really start to go stir crazy. Like I have TOO much energy and can't contain myself. I will decide to have a cheat day but then I go overboard and really binge. This will send me into a depression not just because of guilt but I can clearly feel the effects that the bad foods are having on me physically. I feel bloated and slow and fat. It is horrible.

I am still trying to get the balance right and if there is one thing I have learned it is that I am going to continue to make mistakes. What will define you in this is how you respond to it.

Grab them bootstraps and pick yourself back up son. You can do this!

I am never stop eating rice so no carb diet can go fuck off, bread and other pastries I never have any great love for so I hardly eat those any more and pasta is just meh but nope not giving up rice

If you mess up, just say fuck it and restart. I went 5 weeks, and then uncontrollably went back to my old crappy diet. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I figured it'd be more logical to just restart from square one.

I could be wrong, but I think the cravings come from bacteria in your stomach that thrive off of carbs. The flu like symptoms you get are from their death. I guess when they die, they leave irritating byproduct which makes you feel crappy.

The blog ibreatheimhungry is my go to for recipes.

Your story is funny because I did the same thing one day. My bus drops me off in front of a pizza place everyday, so I have to walk past it daily. One day, i cracked, walked in, and ate an entire pizza in a sitting. I felt pretty damn pathetic TBH. It was such a blur.

Little mini frittatas are my go to food...baked in a muffin tin.

Chop up some zero carb sausage or bacon, sprinkle some cheddar on top. I egg in each hole. Bake for 22 minutes at 350.

Eggs are just the godlike food of the universe.

(Btw, bob Evans sausage links have no carbs...johnsonville suck cause they have sugar)

Giving up sweet potato was the hardest part for me. Still crave those fries every week.

Cheese is a problem because I have very high cholesterol. I got a blood test done a couple weeks ago... here are the exact number im reading them off:

Cholesterol total: 248 (range should be 125-200)

Triglycerides: 246 (needs <150) <--- doctor said i can lower this by no carbs

HDL: 40 (too low, doesnt say a range)

LDL: 159 (needs <130) <--- this is the saturated fats aka CHEESE

Give up sugar and refined carbs and those numbers will drop. I guarantee it. Especially the trigs.

Plus realize your body makes it's own cholesterol based on how you eat. Just eating stuff high in cholesterol doesn't make your numbers go up.

Extreme diets don't last. Just eat less and eat more healthy stuff. Avoid junk food and you'll slim down.

Diets need year long persistency. But not silly ones with taking huge amounts carbs out of your diet.
Also take up an active sport.

Yeah just stick with it OP, it really does work. I've been low carbing for 2 years, lost 45 lbs (gained it all back twice and lost it all again), there have been times when I say fuck it and eat whatever I want and feel bad after. If you can stick to a cheat meal and not turn it into a binge day and then week and then month its not a big deal at all, its just "falling off the wagon" for long periods thats a problem.

I'm T2 pre-diabetic too, was on the verge of requiring daily medication and blood prick tests daily but with low carb I am effectively cured and normal, obviously if I return to eating lots of sweets and processed foods I'd go back to misery but fine otherwise.

Ultimately its a will power problem, while our intentions are infinite our will power is not and a bad day, bad news, stress, etc sap our will power to zero and make it way too easy to fall into old habits. Still, after a few weeks of low carbing it really isn't too hard to avoid the crap foods and nothing beats that little victory dance when you skip eating a cake or pizza and go for something healthier instead.

Don't forget good fast food options too, my go to spots for some quick low carb when I don't want to cook are in n out (double double, animal style protein style); 5 guys, a local teriyaki place that prepares teriyaki with no rice and extra veggies, a local greek place that will slice up doner kebab and serve up double meat with no rice, and chipotle bowl.

Carbs are also fruits(not juice), vegetables and whole grains(not flour). Those are fine.

Refined sugar and carbs you can 100% live without. They are fucking useless really.

In 1972, a British scientist sounded the alarm that sugar – and not fat – was the greatest danger to our health. But his findings were ridiculed and his reputation ruined. How did the world’s top nutrition scientists get it so wrong for so long?....

Scrape off the cheese and toppings and just eat that.

And of course there are people in this thread who think low carb diets are fads. Studies show that it helps reduce weight and improve cardiovascular health, and many health organizations like the American Academy of Family Physicians say low carb is a viable way to lose weight. Its not a fad, its science. Do what works for you. For many people (like myself) low carb diets were easier for them to follow and lose weight.

Not saying you're wrong but Nutritional science is goddamn sketchy

OP, I eat low carb and have done the no carb thing before...but I always make room for a weekly cheat meal (or day). Not just for sanity but it can trick your body into thinking it's receiving a high level of carbs again and then BOOM, back to low carb.

TL;DR no sweat, get back on the horse.

I felt great during those two weeks. I was happier, had more energy and was just felt better about myself......well that all changed today when i bought a massive 18" large pizza and ate 2/3 of it in one sitting. Idk what happened. Why did i do it? I feel like crap now. There was so much cheese on it and i kept eating and eating and eating. How do u guys last on these no/low card diets?

P.S. it was low saturated fat too...it was a great diet and i was happy and i just ruined it

Yeah man low carb is great, I don't get mental fog, grogginess and have more energy when off carbs.
Ever consider just having a cheat day? I usually stay off all carbs throughout the week and then carb up on Sunday, been slowly losing weight without full on missing out on carb food.

Do you exercise?

I did low carb /low cal / high cardio and I shed like 20 lbs in 6 weeks...it was crazy. The problem was that I didn't really have energy. Totally not a sustainable diet at all.

I started doing more of a "balanced macro" diet, lifting weights, eating more, doing way less cardio than previously and I feel pretty good.

Staying away from alcohol (lol...good luck though) and empty calories also helped me a lot. Obviously about once every week to two weeks I'll have 4-6 beers though.

So you fell off. Who cares man. You just hop right back on.

Maybe low carb isn't for you? Maybe you'd be better off calorie counting?

I know I couldn't do low carb and it's a lot more effective for me to just count calories. I eat bread and 2-3 cups of rice everyday, along with pancakes and oatmeal on a consistent basis.

Just pick what you can stick to. That's the most important thing.

no worries, now just stop eating carbs again, no more carbs for another week, and then maybe you can look into a skip day per week.

also learn to make locarb crusts, and make your own pizzas and you can extend your run.

cauliflower crust da gawd.

You didn't ruin your diet with one meal, wtf. In fact your results will probably get better. You need to shock your system from time to time.

This is why people fail at losing weight. They starve themselves to death instead of being in a caloric deficit and shocking their body every 5-6 days.

Could you explain this a little bit more?

Just jump back on. I like food too much to completely cut out carbs forever so I cheat one day a week (usually when out with friends) and I'm still losing weight.

It's fine. I went low carb (<20 grams per day) for a couple years. Every two or 3 weeks I would carb load for 36 hours. It's better if you are lifting but a pizza isn't going to hurt if you don't do it again. Just don't get discouraged.

You had a cheat day. It happens to everyone. Now is the moment to be brave and go back on your diet starting today ! Don't let this ruin all the efforts you've put in the last two weeks. This is a key moment. You'll feel proud of yourself in a few months if you don't let this little setback kill your spirit.

It's all in your head. You can beat the hunger and the urges. That's a fight you will win because you're stronger than you think.

P.S : I did low carb for 6 months more than a year ago and I couldn't be happier about it

Try going on keto. That means like 0 carbs. The reason I find keto so psychologically powerful is because if you break and eat carbs it fucks up your ketosis and you're back to square one. So every time you pick up a pack of chips or something you inevitably decide its not really worth it.

Also 2 weeks is damn good for an initial attempt. Well done. Now get back up.

That isn't true at all. Tolerances vary, some use 20g, some 50 and below. Keto rarely calls for 0 carbs. For those wondering, check out the Reddit, lots of good information there.

In regards to the OP, you need to find alternatives. There is plenty of good keto food. There is cauliflower crust pizza, cheese crust pizza, and fathead pizza (uses almond flour). Meals like that make keto and low carb lifestyles easy.

It's hard to stick to extremist fad diets.

It's hardly that. You don't sound like you know much about it tbh.

Could you explain this a little bit more?

After being on a continious deficit your body will slow down fat burning. By having a 'cheat day' you up your calorie intake and overshoot your daily needs, by any means necessary. By doing this you trick your body into telling him that everything is okay and the fat burning can resume.

You might want to lose weight and be ripped, your body doesn't.

Yep, vegetales have a bunch of carbs. One time i ate a cinnamon roll and still lost weight the next day :B still felt like poop for eating it though. there's some leeway in keto depending if you lift and your size etc.

Dietary cholesterol doesn't have much impact on yours...you can lower your overall cholesterol and triglycerides by losing weight and eating healthier.

Yup

Cholesterol you eat = / cholesterol in your blood.

They are mostly caused by sugar/ simple carbs.

Also carbs are also fruits(not juice), vegetables and whole grains(not flour). Those are fine.

Refined sugar and carbs you can 100% live without. They are fucking useless really.

This. Don't be afraid of carbs. Just eat the right ones and you're fine. I've been vegan for 5 months now and I've never felt so great in my life. Just exercise daily (try for an hour) and you're good.

Lost some fat around my midsection and have a lot more energy.

My GF just had blood work done and her numbers are excellent (and low LDL, good HDL). She's been vegan for 8 months.

They definitely do. You have take fiber into account when counting carbs as well. Gives you a bit more freedom. I personally, don't cheat it as that doesn't work well for me, plus I feel better, more energetic and my thinking is clearer. You really have to know your limits when it comes to cheating. Many say it's fine, but it is disastrous for others. You need to determine how you handle it and if not well, find alternatives that will prevent you from going overboard. One of the best decisions I've made was changing my eating habits though.

It isn't the end all be all though. Diet and exercise in general as well as portion control can work very well for some. Whatever happens, don't beat yourself up when you do fail, just own up to it and push on.

You should have one or several cheat meals throughout the week so that you don't pig out massively like you did this time. Pizza on Friday (or whenever you go out with friends) and some steel cut oats on a Sunday would be good. I also recommend jello topped with a little bit (key words here being "a little bit") of whip cream or a slice of bread with PB&J daily to give you a bit of daily sugar intake. Don't be afraid of drinking milk daily either. Eliminating sugar and carb intake entirely isn't sustainable for most people, but having a couple of cheat meals per weeks is very doable.

And yet studies also show diets in high saturated fats help development of heart disease, and yet people completely deny it. You'll always find somebody with differing opinions.

I hate it when people do the "studies show" bit, misrepresenting the conclusions, and don't even cite any actual studies.

At best, you'll be able to find studies that "may indicate a correlation" between high saturated fat consumption and heart disease development. You then need to look into the context. What kind of diets were being monitored? What kind of people were being monitored?

It gets old, I can find studies backing up most arguments. Folks put way too much stock in random studies they dug up online. Again, for anyone with questions, check out the keto subreddit. Some great detailed information there and a wonderful community, you'll also find various examples of people losing a good bit of weight.

They have low carb tortillas and flatbreads that work great for thincrust pizza crusts.

1. Dry/lightly crisp the base in the oven.
2. Spread a little Alfredo sauce (or even no sugar added tomato, as this is like 2 tbsp) on the crust.
3. Sprinkle with shredded or even chunked mozzarella.
4. Top with pepperoni, chicken, beef, spinach, mushrooms, bacon, whatever you want.
5. Top with shredded mozzarella and parmesan.
6. Put in oven until brown and bubbly.

It's like heaven. I love Alfredo+chunk mozz+chicken+spinach+bacon.

Likely one of the reasons you failed is because you shunned saturated fats. They are a crucial energy source during keto. So throw some butter in the skillet with everything and up the bacon and beef fat.

r/keto and r/ketorecipes are seriously your best friends starting out. Maybe not ketorecipes because they can be. . .complex and too wish-fulfilling, but there is good information on both.

For those who feel they have low energy on lowcarb throughout the day, do you take any supplements?
I take omega 3 pills and multivitamins, and I workout three times a week.

You ever try to cut out soda, or sugar in general? There's a huge hump to get over, same with caffeine. You're allowed a stumble, the point is to be consistent over the long term.
